Exploring Data Literacy Via A Librarian-Faculty Learning Community: A Case Study, Theresa G. Burress, Emily Z. Mann, Tina Neville
USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications
Faculty learning communities (FLCs) are year-long professional development opportunities available at many higher education institutions in the United States. While the literature reflects some librarian engagement with FLCs, it seems limited primarily to areas of traditional librarian expertise such as information literacy and outreach. This article describes a case study of a librarian-facilitated FLC focused on data literacy, which resulted in the development of a teaching toolkit, library-led data literacy instruction, and ongoing collaborations between librarians and faculty. The FLC structure proved to be a valuable framework that facilitated collaborative learning in topics relevant to both disciplinary faculty and librarians. …

An Investigation Of Physical And Mental Health Consequences Among Chinese Parents Who Lost Their Only Child, Qianlan Yin, Zhilei Shang, Na Zhou, Lili Wu, Guangyu Liu, Xiaoqian Yu, Huaihui Zhang, Haidong Xue, Weizhi Liu
USF Alumni and Student Publications
Background: The term “loss-of-only-child family” means that the only child in a family passed away or is disabled due to an accident or other events. The parents who cannot conceive or do not adopt another child, are known as Shidu parents in China. This study compares the physical and mental health of Shidu parents with those parents who have not experienced such loss.
Methods: The target group is comprised of parents being Shidu for more than 1 year (N = 95) and the control group is comprised of parents with a living child (N = 97) from the …

Preserving, Digitizing, And Sustaining The Weekly Challenger, A Local African-American Newspaper., Catherine A. Cardwell, Alexandra Curran
USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications
A local newspaper in Saint Petersburg, Florida, The Weekly Challenger was established in 1967 with the goal of documenting and sharing information about the African-American community at a time when other local news outlets largely ignored it. Through a special legislative appropriation from the State of Florida, the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at the University of South Florida Saint Petersburg received funding to preserve, digitize, and sustain the newspaper. In this article, the authors discuss the steps taken to build the repository for the newspaper’s print and electronic archives, including photographs and videotaped interviews with a long-time publisher. Alba As Eternal Mother: Violent Spaces And The ‘Last Woman’ In Manuel De Pedrolo’S "Mecanoscrit Del Segon Origen", Pedro Nilsson-Fernàndez
Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía
The ambitious literary project of Catalan author Manuel de Pedrolo i Molina (1918-1990) has generally been perceived as belonging to the tradition of popular literature, a label often reinforced by the unprecedented success of his minor work Mecanoscrit del segon origen. This has clearly damaged Pedrolo’s status in the Catalan literary; as Kathryn Crameri highlights, “(w)hen authors such as Manuel de Pedrolo championed more popular genres such as crime fiction” –or science fiction as far as this study is concerned– “they had to endure criticisms of the quality of their writing” (Crameri, 2008, p. 23). This article will challenge …

Conflict Of Interest In Exploitation And Utilisation Of Transboundary Natural Resources On Lake Victoria, Edmond M. Were
Conflict Of Interest In Exploitation And Utilisation Of Transboundary Natural Resources On Lake Victoria, Edmond M. Were
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
The management of Lake Victoria as a “regional common” is expected to adhere to the global principles of transboundary natural resource management. However, national interest and power asymmetry amongst riparian states buoyed by external demand have overwhelmed global and regional norms leading to incessant exploitation of the common resources. This paper uses idealist and realist perspectives of power relations to inform the analysis of conflicting interests in transboundary natural resource exploitation. It partly relies on 2012-2013 primary data from purposively selected Beach Management Units in Kenya and Uganda and secondary data from regional fisheries institutions. Notwithstanding the normative value of …

Analyzing The Data Management Environment In A Master's-Level Institution., Anthony Stamatoplos, Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry
USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications
The data management environments at research-intensive institutions have been studied extensively. Few studies, however, have assessed the environments at institutions that are not classified as research-intensive, where scholarship and obtaining external funding is still highly encouraged. Using results from semi-structured interviews with faculty from an array of disciplines, the authors describe the research processes and data concerns at a Master's-level institution. A comparison of the results illustrate that, at least at this institution, faculty face very similar issues as those identified at research-intensive organizations and many of the same practices and services could be implemented on a smaller scale.

Using Ethnodrama To Understand And Communicate Interview Data: Paper For The Arts-Based Educational Research Sig 2015 Annual Meeting Of The American Educational Research Association, Charles Vanover
USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications
In this paper, I discuss my efforts to use arts-based methods to understand teachers' work in schools shaped by the No Child Left Behind law and other mass reforms. I describe how the process of writing, rehearsing, and putting up multiple performances of six ethnodramas allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the data I used as the source material for these productions. Ethnodrama changed my view of what mattered in my data, and this understanding guided my choices as I created the scripts and worked with actors and community members to put up the shows.

This guide was created by Schnur as a class project for his Computers in Libraries class in the USF School of Library and Information Science. At the time, no helpful finding aid for this substantial collection existed. Schnur developed this finding aid and an accompanying Appleworks database to promote access to the collection. Since 2012, the collection has been reorganized and reprocessed so this guide no longer represents an accurate inventory of holdings. Please consult with staff at USF Tampa for a revised finding aid. La Ciencia Ficción Y La Narrativa Posmoderna: Hacia La Convergencia, Mikel Peregrina
La Ciencia Ficción Y La Narrativa Posmoderna: Hacia La Convergencia, Mikel Peregrina
Alambique.
