Surface And Deep Ocean Circulation In The Subpolar North Atlantic During The Mid-Pleistocene Revolution, Amy K. Wright, Benjamin P. Flower
Surface And Deep Ocean Circulation In The Subpolar North Atlantic During The Mid-Pleistocene Revolution, Amy K. Wright, Benjamin P. Flower
Marine Science Faculty Publications
We investigated surface and deep ocean variability in the subpolar North Atlantic from 1000 to 500 thousand years ago (ka) based on two Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites, Feni drift site 980 (55°29′N, 14°42′W) and Bjorn drift site 984 (61°25′N, 24°04′W). Benthic foraminiferal stable isotope data, planktic foraminiferal faunas, ice‐rafted debris data, and faunally based sea‐surface temperature estimates help test the hypothesis that oceanographic changes in the North Atlantic region were associated with the onset of the 100‐kyr world during the mid‐Pleistocene revolution. Based on percentage of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s) records from both sites, surface waters during interglacials and glacials …

The Case That Won't Go Away: Beseiged Institutions And The Massachusetts Teacher Tests, Larry H. Ludlow, Dennis Shirley, Camelia Rosca
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Teacher testing was inaugurated in Massachusetts in 1998 and a 59% failure rate among test-takers led to public shaming of the teacher candidates and their colleges and universities in the media. Within a two-year time period, low-performing teacher education programs in Massachusetts initiated a wide range of test preparatory activities which led to a dramatic increase in their students' pass rates. The authors separate colleges and universities into three categories and examine their differentiated responses to teacher testing. Their finding that institutions of higher education have responded effectively to teacher testing does not preclude critique of teacher testing as currently …

The Committee on Issues of Sexual Orientation (CISO), an Advisory Committee to the President of the University of South Florida, first convened in September 1993. Later renamed the Committee on Issues of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (CISOGI), this advisory body regularly meets with USF executive staff, human resources personnel, and representatives from the diversity and equal opportunity offices. This university-wide body has consulted with groups about adding non-discriminatory clauses and partner benefits for all employees, regardless of sexual orientation. In addition, this committee supports leadership initiatives and opportunities for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students at the University of …

Failing Georgia: The Case Against The Ban On Social Promotion, Donald R. Livingston, Sharon M. Livingston
Failing Georgia: The Case Against The Ban On Social Promotion, Donald R. Livingston, Sharon M. Livingston
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Our analysis begins with an examination of the state of Georgia's rationale for the decision regarding social promotion that was based on the perceived views that teachers have on the issue. Research suggests, however, that teachers hold contradictory opinions concerning the use of standardized tests for high stakes decisions, such as promotion, and are not aware of the consequences most children suffer when they fail a grade. ...

Extensions Of Quandles And Cocycle Knot Invariants, Marina Appiou Nikiforou
Extensions Of Quandles And Cocycle Knot Invariants, Marina Appiou Nikiforou
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Knot theory has rapidly expanded in recent years. New representations of braid groups led to an extremely powerful polynomial invariant, the Jones polynomial. Combinatorics applied to knot and link diagrams led to generalizations. Knot theory also has connections with other fields such as statistical mechanics and quantum field theory, and has applications in determining how certain enzymes act on DNA molecules, for example.
The principal objective of this dissertation is to study the relations between knots and algebraic structures called quandles. A quandle is a set with a binary operation satisfying some properties related to the three Reidemeister moves. The …
The Incidence Of Positional Nystagmus In Healthy Participants Revisited, Terri L. Schneider
The Incidence Of Positional Nystagmus In Healthy Participants Revisited, Terri L. Schneider
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of nystagmus found in healthy individuals during the positional testing subtest of the standard vestibular test battery. Positional testing involves moving the patient's head, and sometimes the entire body, into a variety of positions while observing eye movement. The hypothesis of the current study was that a relatively low percentage of participants would display nystagmus during positional testing used routinely in clinical diagnostic procedures. The findings were then compared to those of an earlier study in which 82% of normal, healthy individuals were reported to exhibit nystagmus during this testing. …
