Biodiversity Hotspots : Threats And Conservation Efforts, Edyta Dowksza

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Biodiversity is a fairly new word. It is a combination of the words: biological and diversity. "The contracted form 'biodiversity' was apparently coined by Walter G. Rosen in 1985 for the first planning meeting of the 'National Forum on Biodiversity' held in Washington DC in September 1986, the proceedings of which brought the notion of biodiversity to the attention of a wide field of scientists and others (Heywood, 1995).

Firefighting : A Female Perspective, Shelby K. Willis Jan 2002

Firefighting : A Female Perspective, Shelby K. Willis

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Firefighting has been a paid profession for less than half a century. Before that, volunteer departments handled the fire emergencies and in some locations still do today. The fire service, whose history goes back to the 1600s, developed and employed techniques that evolved into advanced training and technology now considered "cutting edge." As technology evolves, traditions of the fire service remain stable and resistant to change.

Moods And Motives: A Comparison Of Catullus And Ovid In The Story Of Ariadne And Theseus, Tara Bonds

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The thesis begins with a retelling of the Ariadne and Theseus myth. Once the basic storyline has been explained, a brief historical survey of the political and social environment ofCatullus and Ovid follows, for the changes in Rome and the historical context in which each wrote must be taken into consideration. Next, Catullus and Ovid's presentations will be analyzed within the literary context each writer provides. Catullus wrote his version within a wedding hymn, among stories of other lovers; Ovid's version of the myth is placed within his Heroides, a collection of fictional letters written by mythological female characters. The …

The Ouye Family : Topaz Survivor, Nadine K. Beard Jan 2002

The Ouye Family : Topaz Survivor, Nadine K. Beard

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

It was not until 1997, when I was 43 years old, that I learned that my mother and eight members of her immediate family were among the approximately 110,000 Japanese Americans sent to concentration camps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. My mother, Mary Ouye Baker, passed away in 1962, when I was not quite eight years old, and although I had occasional contact over the years with my mother's family, I had not maintained a close relationship with the family after her passing. In 1995, while working as an exhibitor at a trade show with my husband in San …

Armenians Of Tampa Bay : A Long Way Home, Anna Nefedova Jan 2002

Armenians Of Tampa Bay : A Long Way Home, Anna Nefedova

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Genocide would probably account for more than a half of all the historical research and literature endeavors that have something to do with the Armenian nation. The events of 1915, when the Turks attempted to eradicate the whole nation, and the preceding massacres of the late 19 century give food for reflection enough for many centuries to come. The accounts of the survivors are filled with terror and dismay; there have not been many events in the history of the past century as appalling or as huge in scale and consequences as the genocide of the Armenian nation.

Deaf Victims Of The Holocaust, David Volper Jan 2002

Deaf Victims Of The Holocaust, David Volper

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The years 1933-1945 were filled with great turmoil and inconsistency throughout Germany. As early as 1933, laws were enacted and passed that set in motion the sequence of events that would lead to World War II and the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler's rise to power in a country torn by inner conflict subsequently gave authority to those who adhered to the principles of eugenics, euthanasia, sterilizations, and other methods of"population control." By the late 1930s, the goal of public support of establishing a "master race" was widely accepted and lauded in Germany. While Hitler's influence and power was considerable, his master …

The Effects Of Divorce On Children's Well Being: A Study Of Preadolescents And Adolescents, Amanda Wagner

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Some time ago, I remember reading that every person knows at least one other person who is divorced. When I thought about how many of my friends parents are still together, I could come up with only three. It makes you wonder if maybe to keep up with the changing times and the increase in divorce, the above statement should be worded, "every person knows at least one other person who is still married".

Sex In Advertising, Christina L. Servedio Jan 2002

Sex In Advertising, Christina L. Servedio

Advertisements sell a great deal more than products. They sell values, images, and concepts of success and worth, love and sexuality, popularity, and normalcy. They tell us who we are and who we should be. This paper is intended to raise the issues of how advertising uses sex appeal to sell a product or service and at what cost to society.
