Reproductive Biology Of The Rat Lungworm Angiostrongylus Cantonensis (Metastrongyloidea: Angiostrongylidae), Grace Spatafora Harris

Twenty rats (Rattus norvegicus) received infective inocula of 5, 10, 20, and 40 third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The effects of varying doses of larvae on prepatent period larval production, worm establishment, worm size, and fertility were studied. The aquatic gastropod Biomphalaria glabratta was the experimental intermediate host.

The duration of the prepatent period varied from 37 to 45 days. The shortest prepatent period was observed in animals that received the highest infective inoculum. The prepatent period showed a significant inverse relationship with increasing inoculum size. Larval production increased logarithmically, followed by a plateau phase. The number of larvae per …

Isolation And Characterization Of The Serum Ferroxidase Inhibitor, Melissa Page Calisch

strong evidence suggests that the serum ferroxidases (ceruloplasmin andferroxidase II) promote the formation of Fe-III transferrin and thereby stimulate the turnover of iron from tissue stores. Ceruloplasmin is the major ferroxidase in human serum; whereas, ferroxidase II accotmts for an increased proportion of the activity in less highly developed animals. A large fold increase in total ferroxidase II activity was observed when both human and rabbit sera were subjected to gel-filtration on sephadex G-200. This indicated that whole serum might contain a potent inhibitor of ferroxidase II. Such an inhibitor has been isolated and purified to homogeneity by a combination …

An Electrophoretic Comparison Of Gene Loci In Etheostoma Nigrum And Etheostoma Olmstedi From The James River Drainage, Virginia, Randall Keith Falls

As many as five different populations of Etheostoma nigrum and Etheostoma olmstedi have been identified in the James River drainage, Virginia. Genetic variation of these populations was analyzed with starch gel electrophoresis and revealed only three distinct populations. Nine loci encoding five enzyme systems and two loci encoding muscle proteins were examined in tissue homogenates. All populations were monomorphic with the exception of the esterase-3 (Est-3), phosphoglucomutase (Pgm-1) and phosphoglucose isomerase (Pgi) loci. Two alleles of Est-3 exhibited activity in the homozygous and heterozygous conditions. Pgm-1 occurred as two alleles with a high degree of heterozygosity (46% for E. nigrum …

Some form of capital punishment has been practiced for as long as there has been recorded history. Early laws were generally harsh and failed to consider the impact of crime on society. In 621 B.C. the Code of Dracon recorded the laws observed in Athens. The Code of Dracon revealed that almost all offences were punishable by death. Two centuries later a more humanitarian attitude was expressed in Greece. Plato believed in the segregation and reform of the criminal rather than his execution.

In England the death penalty for felony convictions was traced to the reign of Henry I. It …

To date, no scholarly articles have been published concerning Karel Husa's Al Fresco for concert band (1975). This thesis will demonstrate how Husa has achieved coherence by strongly binding his structural and motivic material. His foundation for this binding are the intervals of the second and the third.

The development of protestant chorales reflected the new goals which the reformation brought to the church service. Martin Luther, a primary leader of the Protestant Reformation, recognized that that goal of the service was to make his revelation of faith understandable to the people of Germany. The church service now became more than a sacramental act of obedience; it was a time for people to willingly proclaim the word of God. Through the singing of the chorale, the congregation took an active part in proclaiming the new faith found in the Reformation.

There are a number of important texts, sometimes treated as philosophical and sometimes as literary works, which do not usually find an appropriate audience. Paradigms of what I have in mind are: Kierkegaard's pseudonymous writings, almost all of Nietzsche, Marx's narratives of capital and class-struggle, Sartre's complex series of fictions, plays, treatises, critical performances and autobiography, and Heidegger's hypnotic meditations and textual exegeses. Responses by philosophers, especially Anglo-American ones, seldom take account of the specific literary forms of these works or of their authors’ very self-conscious concern with the problems and strategies of writing. The effects of osmotic stress on sodium, potassium, and chloride metabolism and the physiological mechanisms governing these ions were studied in the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus. Animals were subjected to dietary regimens ranging from sodium-free to high-sodium diets for sixty days. Results indicate the gerbils were not physiologically stressed by the imposed diets. Apparently the animals regulate ion metabolism via intrarenal mechanisms and pituitary antidiuretic hormone while behavior and adrenal cortical activity are insignificant.

I mean by the title of this essay to allude to Nietzsche Contra Wagner and thereby to suggest the use which Nietzsche made of Renan in formulating some of his most distinctive thoughts. More specifically I suggest that Nietzsche's later view of history, especially as expressed in The Genealogy of Morals and The Antichrist, is a critique and parody of Renan's History of the Origins of Christianity. (I speak deliberately of Nietzsche's "view of history" rather than his "philosophy of history" because the latter phrase contains too many associations which Nietzsche's view rejects.) To insure the perpetuation of these 'inalienable' rights, revolutionary Americans fought violently to break the oppressive bonds of a tyrannical monarch. Research in the area of sport psychology has grown tremendously over the past twenty years. One area, in particular, that has been researched a great deal is the idea of the typical athletic personality. (Fletcher and Dowell, 1971; Foster, 1977; Morgan and Johnson, 1978; and Morris, Vaccaro and Clarke, 1979 are examples.) Does the personality of the athlete differ from that of the non-athlete? Of particular concern are the areas of personality dealing with locus control and self-esteem. Locus of control is distributed along the internal/external dimension. T.D. Cutsforth once stated that "no single mental activity of the congenitally blind child is not distorted by the absence of sight." Blindness permeates the intellectual functioning of language, thought, comprehension and conceptualization. Ultimately, the child lacking vision will both understand and respond to the world in a manner unlike that of a sighted child. This incongruous interaction breeds frustration since the blind are a minority in a world which concentrates on the characteristics, needs, behaviors, and accomplishments of sighted individuals. The Law School was established as a department of Richmond College in 1870. In 1890 the family of the late T. C . Williams, who had been a devoted and valued Trustee, donated $25,000 as the nucleus of an endowment for the Law School. In recognition of this gift, the name of the School was changed to The T. C .
