An Attack On The Optimum Marital Deduction: Revenue Ruling 76-176, J. Rodney Johnson Jul 1976

An Attack On The Optimum Marital Deduction: Revenue Ruling 76-176, J. Rodney Johnson

Law Faculty Publications

A recent development in the field of estate and gift taxation-the issuance of Revenue Ruling 76-156 may be an indication of a policy decision on the part of the Internal Revenue Service to clamp down on the increasing utilization of the estate planner's most flexible tool in the ·area of post-mortem estate planning-the disclaimer. Due to the potential importance of this ruling, it seems desirable ( 1 ) to deal with the ruling, itself, in some detail, ( 2) to see how the ruling might affect an estate planning concept suggested in these pages last year, and ( 3) to …

Lex Romana Familiae, Patsy Lewis Barr May 1976

Lex Romana Familiae, Patsy Lewis Barr

Master's Theses

Marriage among the Romans could occur at quite an early age, according to modern standards. Bethrothal might be arranged at any age above seven.1 The custom of early bethrothal and marriage certainly tended to discourage any romantic inclinations. If one did marry for love, generally it was with a widow or divorcee. The possibility of sentimental attachment among the very young was slight, but marriage to the Romans was not for love, but for duty to the state. Often the Romans had to rely on a post-marital propinquity for the development of love which normally precedes marriage.

The Effects Of Live Modeling And Specificity Of Verbal Reinforcement On The Modification Of Classroom Behavior, James Joseph Fox Iii May 1976

The Effects Of Live Modeling And Specificity Of Verbal Reinforcement On The Modification Of Classroom Behavior, James Joseph Fox Iii

Master's Theses

This study attempted to increase the frequency of student on-task behavior in two. third grade classrooms. using live modeling and vicarious reinforcement. In a multiple baseline-counterbalanced treatments design two classrooms of students were exposed to live, peer modeling displays of on-task behavior. In one class room the teacher praised the model, using behaviorally specific praise while the second classroom teacher used non-specific praise. Praise conditions were later reversed. It was hypothesized that after exposure to the modeling display s a) the frequency of on-task behavior would be increased over baseline levels to a pre-determined treatment outcome , b) behaviorally specific …

Arbitrator Of Constitutional Crisis : A Study Of Edward Coke: 1607-1628, Francis Reames Beers May 1976

Arbitrator Of Constitutional Crisis : A Study Of Edward Coke: 1607-1628, Francis Reames Beers

Master's Theses

In Sir Edward Coke's earlier days, he too had been a supporter of the sanctity of the crown. In 1603, when Coke was Attorney-General, he prosecuted Sir Walter Raleigh for treason, In the trial Coke tried to ride roughshod over the defendant. With vigor he attacked Raleigh with remarks that were "shameful and unworthy " of a man in his position. He was also careless at the quality of the evidence upon which he based his assertions. With such judicial intimidation, the Attorney-General was able to secure a verdict of guilty for the crown.

Coke's independent nature helped make the …

Predicting Leader Emergence Within Fielder's Contingency Model Of Leadership Effectiveness, Helen Ferguson Daniel May 1976

Predicting Leader Emergence Within Fielder's Contingency Model Of Leadership Effectiveness, Helen Ferguson Daniel

Master's Theses

Eighteen fourman groups consisting of female undergraduates at the University of Richmond participated in problem-solving tasks within the restrictions of an all-channel communication network. Each subject was chosen by her scores on Fiedler' s (1967) Least-preferred co-worker (LPC) scale. The hypothesis that low LPC Ss would emerge as group leaders under the conditions of Octant II of Fiedler's contingency model was not supported by the nominations of twelve groups. Two-factor ANOV s showed non significant time differences over time for the four leadership conditions. These results are consistent with the Rice and Chemers (1973) findings which indicate that Fiedler' s …

Auditory Or Visual Perception : Which Is The Better Predictor Of Reading Comprehension, Thomas Spencer Chalkley Jr. May 1976

Auditory Or Visual Perception : Which Is The Better Predictor Of Reading Comprehension, Thomas Spencer Chalkley Jr.

Master's Theses

All first and third graders from a surburban public school were administered the Kerby Learning Modalities Test (KLMT) and the Metropolitan Achievement Test Battery (MAT). The relationship between the MAT reading compre hension subtest percentile scores, the KLMT overall visual percentile scores, and the KLMT overall auditory percentile scores were explored through the use of Regression Analysis and other correlational techniques. The various correlations were used in several prediction models. There was no significant difference (p> .01) between the .full model predicting Reading Comprehension (RC) with Auditory (A) and Visual (V) and the restricted model predicting RC with A; however …

The Use Of Territory As A Natural Reinforcer In The Modification Of Academic Performance And Disruptive Classroom Behaviors, Sherwin Lynnwood Davis May 1976

The Use Of Territory As A Natural Reinforcer In The Modification Of Academic Performance And Disruptive Classroom Behaviors, Sherwin Lynnwood Davis

Master's Theses

Emphasis is currently being placed upon the use of low-cost, naturally occurring reinforcers in classroom behavior modification programs. The effectiveness of students'territorial space as a natural reinforcer for social and academic classroom behaviors was investigated. Using the multiple baseline technique, student access to territorial space was systematically manipulated in an attempt to decelerate out-of-seat behaviors and to increase the percentage of assignments completed and graded either satisfactory or excellent. Student vocalization was also monitored; it was predicted that increases in desired academic behaviors would produce reciprocal decreases in vocalization. Finally, a fading procedure was utilized to remove gross territorial markings …

The Role Of An Eyestalk Extract In The Regulation Of The Blood Sodium And Calcium Concentrations Of The Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus, Gregory Martin Ivy May 1976

The Role Of An Eyestalk Extract In The Regulation Of The Blood Sodium And Calcium Concentrations Of The Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus, Gregory Martin Ivy

Master's Theses

The effect of bilateral eyestalk ligation or ablation on the blood Na+ and ca++ concentrations of the euryhaline blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, was measured in 10 o/oo and 5 o/oo sea water. The ablations caused a significant decrease in the blood Na+ and ca++ over a 24 hour period. The serum Na+ level increased significantly 6 hours following injections of an eyestalk extract whereas the blood total ca++ level did not change significantly. Eyestalk ligation, however, did not cause significant blood Na+ and ca++ changes. The blood Na+ level of intact crabs increased significantly in acclimating to colder water when …

The Relationship Between Gill Na+ + K+ -Activated Adenosine Triphosphatase Activity And Sodium Regulation In Acclimation Of The Blue Crab, John Lewis Harris May 1976

The Relationship Between Gill Na+ + K+ -Activated Adenosine Triphosphatase Activity And Sodium Regulation In Acclimation Of The Blue Crab, John Lewis Harris

Master's Theses

Evidence from this study suggests that Na++K+-activated ATPase is involved in the ionic regulation of sodium in the hemo-lymph of the blue crab in low salinity environments. The time course of changes in gill Na++K+-ATPase specific activity follow- ing transfer of crabs from JO o/oo to 5 o/oo salinity indicates that a major increase in activity occurred within 2.5-3.0 hr. Apparently, a 8.8-11.1% decrease in hemolymph sodium ion concen-tration to about J55-J60 meq/1 in approximately 2-J hr was sufficient to activate the ATPase cation transport system in the gills of Callinectes sapidus. Following enzymatic activation, hemolymph sodium concentration gradually approached …

King Charles I During His Trial And Execution : His Personal Life And The Alteration Of His Personality, Jonathan H. Poston Apr 1976

King Charles I During His Trial And Execution : His Personal Life And The Alteration Of His Personality, Jonathan H. Poston

Honors Theses

The "martyrdom" of Charles I has been a subject of controversy by historians, amateur and professional, since the moment the King;s head was severed on the block at Whitehall. The purpose of this paper is not to recount events repeated throughout a large array of books on the subject, but to examine a possible reason for the martyred reputation of Charles and to examine his personality.

Dates used in this paper reflect a need for uniformity, The English Calendar in 1648-1649 was still the Julian (or Old Style), which was ten days behind the rest of Europe. Also, although England …

Causes Of Obesity, Barbara Brown Apr 1976

Causes Of Obesity, Barbara Brown

Honors Theses

The preoccupation with obesity finds expression in the popularity of books and articles dealing with dieting and weight control, the rapid growth of weight reduction groups such as Tops and Weight Watchers, as well as the full marketing of numerous low calorie and dietetic foods. Much of the interest in weight control is a consequence of the current standards of physical beauty in our society. But another more pressing reason for interest in weight control is the documented evidence relating obesity to various somatic disorders.

Virginia Architecture In The Seventeenth Century : The Medieval Style, Elizabeth Neal Pitzer Apr 1976

Virginia Architecture In The Seventeenth Century : The Medieval Style, Elizabeth Neal Pitzer

Honors Theses

Virginia colonists recreated the old world in the new in the seventeenth century. They brought to America the medieval style of architecture so popular with the humbler classes of artisan and yeoman in England. People from this element of society, hoping to improve their fortunes, immigrated to the new world. Longing for familiar landmarks, they built homes in the traditional medieval style reminiscent of England. A medieval cottage was also a practical dwelling for the colonial family because it was fairly simple for the amateur builder to construct.

The Life And Rule Of St. Benedict, Ann H. Thompson Apr 1976

The Life And Rule Of St. Benedict, Ann H. Thompson

Honors Theses

Saint Benedict is regarded by most figures of the Middle Ages, and by historians and monks of the modern world, as the patriarch and founder of all institutes of western monasticism. His fame and place in Christian history, however, are due solely to his short work, The Rule of Saint Benedict. No life could be more remote from the turbulence of the sixth century, and no individual could appear less likely to contribute to the development of modern Europe. Yet Benedict's achievements were so influential that centuries after his death (600-1200 A.D.) were known collectively as the Benedictine Age. "The …

A Study Of The Symbol Of The Cross In Marcel Proust's A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu, Eugene Freedman Mar 1976

A Study Of The Symbol Of The Cross In Marcel Proust's A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu, Eugene Freedman

Master's Theses

Á la recherche du temps perdu, by Marcel Proust, is the story of a young, naive boy named Marcel who grew up to be a writer . In this paper, when the author of the novel is referred to, the name Proust will be employed, while the main character of the novel will be referred to as Marcel. For Marcel, the narrator of the work, the composition of a novel was his only hope for immortality and salvation from the passage of time, since time destroys. In his quest for immortality, it was his task to understand the ever-changing …
