The Role Of The Tobacco Trade In Turkish-American Relations, 1923-29., Robert Carey Goodman Dec 1988

The Role Of The Tobacco Trade In Turkish-American Relations, 1923-29., Robert Carey Goodman

Master's Theses

This study of the tobacco trade between Turkey and the United States provides new perspectives on two major themes in Turkish-American relations between 1923 and 1929: the effect of Turkish nationalism on American interests in Ataturk's Turkey, and the effort to restore Turkish- American diplomatic ties broken during World War I. The marked rise in American cigarette consumption after World War I made the tobacco trade a crucial link between Turkey and America because it required the importation of aromatic tobacco. During the Turkish Republic' s first decades, the value of American tobacco imports from Turkey exceeded the value of …

A Considertation Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In The Context Of Public Policy Decision-Making, Kathleen M. Wong Oct 1988

A Considertation Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In The Context Of Public Policy Decision-Making, Kathleen M. Wong

Honors Theses

Just what is to be understood by the term "cost-benefit analysis" ("benefit-cost analysis")? The question itself arises from a curiosity into how government decisions (which affect all) are made. This paper gives an elementary discussion of constitutive parts, raising and responding to some initial criticisms. It seems fairly evident, unneedful of additional explanation or elaboration. The individual on the street would simply declare that it sounded like some rather ordinary decision-making process which involved the consideration of the costs and benefits incurred by the paths of action that might be selected. "Ordinary" means accessible to anyone and not the exclusive …

A Rapid System For Analyzing Histone H4 Mutations In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Edward Rex Lakey Harkrader Aug 1988

A Rapid System For Analyzing Histone H4 Mutations In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Edward Rex Lakey Harkrader

Master's Theses

Genetically engineered, specific histone H4 mutations have been analyzed in yeast which lack normal H4 protein using the time consuming technique of tetrad dissection. The purpose of the present research project has been to develop a rapid new system for analyzing histone H4 mutations in yeast. The new system has made it possible to isolate quickly cells which are surviving on mutant H4 only. The system will make it possible to analyze more quickly large numbers of H4 mutations. It is termed a plasmid shuttle system because of the use of plasmid vectors for shuttling histone H4 alleles in and …

Sodium/Proton Exchange In The Gills Of Three Species Of Crabs : Libinia Dubia, Callinectes Sapidus, And Menippe Mercenaria, Nicholas J. Maiolo Aug 1988

Sodium/Proton Exchange In The Gills Of Three Species Of Crabs : Libinia Dubia, Callinectes Sapidus, And Menippe Mercenaria, Nicholas J. Maiolo

Master's Theses

Na+/H+ exchange was studied in plasma membrane vesicles from gills of three species of crabs: Callinectes sapidus (blue crab), Libinia dubia (spider crab), and Menippe mercenaria (stone crab). Spider crabs and stone crabs were acclimated to full (35ppt) seawater, while blue crabs were acclimated to both dilute (5ppt) and full strength seawater. Membrane vesicles were prepared by sucrose density centrifugation. Na+/H+ exchange was analyzed using acridine orange fluorescence. Male C. sapidus showed the most exchange activity (per g gill tissue), followed by M. mercenaria, female C. sapidus and Libinia dubia. No difference in exchange activity was evident when blue crabs …

Political Instability In The Arab Middle East, Delores M. Moses Aug 1988

Political Instability In The Arab Middle East, Delores M. Moses

Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is to prove that the Middle Eastern States, excluding Israel, experience political instability because the people lack state nationalism. State nationalism is defined as pride on the part of the people in their state to the extent that they transfer their primary loyalty from their village, ethnic, or religious group to the national government. The people will share a sense of oneness and a common identity with the government if they possess state nationalism.

The methodology used in this paper was to apply the indigenous theory of Christopher Clapham to historical events and the political, …

A Reverse Genetics Approach For Studying Histone H4 Structure-Function Relationships In Yeast, Michael J. Bonaduce Aug 1988

A Reverse Genetics Approach For Studying Histone H4 Structure-Function Relationships In Yeast, Michael J. Bonaduce

Master's Theses

A previously constructed mutation of the histone H4 gene has been the subject of a detailed analysis. The mutation involves an H4 gene encoding two amino acid changes which substitute aspartic acid for glycine at positions 13 and 42 of the polypeptide. These substitutions result in a nonfunctional H4 protein when assayed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In contrast, an analysis of an amino terminal deletion of amino acids 3-26 results in a functional H4 protein. Physical biochemistry studies identify the sites of histone-histone interactions between residues 38-102 of histone H4, the same area in which position 42 resides. The question being …

Sensation Seeking And Daily Activities As Determinants Of Criminal Behavior, Rebecca S. Fulper May 1988

Sensation Seeking And Daily Activities As Determinants Of Criminal Behavior, Rebecca S. Fulper

Master's Theses

This study looks at sensation seeking and daily activities as possible determinants of criminal behavior within the age range of 15 to 30. A male offender and a male nonoffender population between the ages of 15 and 18 were compared on two questionnaires; Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale, Form VI, (SSS) and the Daily Activities Questionnaire (DAQ). The design consisted of one independent variable with two levels and multiple dependent variables. The research hypotheses indicated that the juvenile offender group would score higher on both Disinhibition subscales of the SSS and lower on the DAQ (Intention - Disinhibition (IDIS); Experience - …

Some Chemical And Physical Factors Influencing Growth Of Panus Stipticus Bulliard Ex Fries And Armillariella Mellea (Vahl Ex Fries) Karsten, James Robert Kirkland

Master's Theses

Two species of wood rotting fungi were used to investigate the possibility that growth-enhancing or inhibitory substances in woods from various trees are responsible for the distribution of these fungi in nature. Panus stipticus (Bulliard ex Fries) and Armillariella mellea (Vahl ex Fries) Karsten were cultured in the laboratory on blocks of wood from Taxodium distichum (L.) Richard, Juniperus virginiana L., Pinus taeda L. and Quercus rubra L. Panus stipticus grew well on the surface of the wood blocks; histological studies showed less penetration into the xylem of the softwoods than into that of Q. rubra. Armillariella mellea grew well …

The Influence Of Gender Schema On The Perception Of Advertising, Kim Seitz Apr 1988

The Influence Of Gender Schema On The Perception Of Advertising, Kim Seitz

Honors Theses

Schemas are used to organize knowledge about a stimulus or concept. They help to show what information should be notice or ignored, interpret between long-term memory and the current stimulus, and aid in efficiently storing information. Individuals' responses to decisions are guided by schemas. The process of eleviating cognitive dissonance between reality and existing schemas serves as their motivation (Ruble & Stangor, 1986).

Outcome-Biased Correspondent Inferences And Choice Behavior In Social Dilemmas : "Acting On Inference", Shannon J. Pratt

Honors Theses

An experiment employing 38 intro-psychology students was performed in order to a) observe the outcome-biased correspondent inference, b) investigate whether this inference may be manifested in social dilemma behavior, and c) investigate the role of social values in reactions to feedback, investment behaviors, and sensitivity to the correspondent inference. The experiment consisted of two parts. The first part categorized subjects as either cooperators or defectors using the Ring Measure of Social Values. In the second part, subjects completed a booklet with the aid of taped instructions. The booklet contained a questionnaire, a bogus scenario, and three investment situations. Results showed …

Jealousy : An Investigation Of Attribution, Margaret L. Offerdahl Apr 1988

Jealousy : An Investigation Of Attribution, Margaret L. Offerdahl

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the determinants of jealousy in different situations. Specifically, the research extended a study which identified five major categories of jealousy: romantic jealousy, jealousy of others' social acceptance, jealousy of others' undeserved accomplishments, jealousy of others' traits, and jealousy of others' happiness (Baldwin, 1988).

The investigation utilized a questionnaire narrating one scenario for each of the five jealousy provoking situations. Subjects rated the appropriateness of the jealous response in each situation on a scale from 1 to 7 and generated perceived causes for each jealous response. An analysis of variance of the appropriateness …

The "Ten Words", James R. Luck Jr Apr 1988

The "Ten Words", James R. Luck Jr

Honors Theses

One of the most exciting trends in the field of religion today is the continuing development of the late-in-coming Jewish-Christian dialogue. It is hoped that as the two groups continue to approach each other in open inquiry - emphasizing both those beliefs that unite the groups in spirit, as well as those which distinguish them as separate faiths - the resulting experience would enhance the lives of Jews and Christians alike.

One of the fields of academic study which naturally lends itself to this type of dialogue is the Hebrew Scriptures; more familiar in the Christian context as the "Old …

Thrift Competition And Its Impact On Financial Institution Mergers And Acquisitions In The Richmond, Virginia Rma, Kenneth W. Vance

Master's Theses

Commercial banking has been subject to antitrust review for only a few decades. In 1948, the Transamerica Corporation was charged by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System with a violation of Section 7 of the Clayton Act when it acquired controlling interest in several independent banks in California (1). At the time of the acquisitions, the banks in question were in direct competition with one or more oof the banks already controlled by Transamerica Corporation. Moreover, Transamerica Corporation held a major interest in Bank of America. This unique case ignited a fear of probable banking concentration …

A Study Of The Self In The Red And The Black And The Confessions Of Felix Krull, Confidence Man, Roberta Mowery Apr 1988

A Study Of The Self In The Red And The Black And The Confessions Of Felix Krull, Confidence Man, Roberta Mowery

Honors Theses

Although there are many reasons for reading and writing literature, perhaps the most compelling one is to gain knowledge of and access to the self. One of the most interesting aspects in the literary study of the self involves the individual's perception of his public and private self. This differentiation between the public an dprivate persona is developed in dept in Stendhal's The Red and the Black and Thomas Mann's The Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Man. The protagonists of these two works lead lives of duplicity and hypocrisy, each submerging his private personality in order to get ahead in …

William Courtenay's England : An Aristocratic Bishop In The Fourteenth Century, Michael P. Gwaltney Apr 1988

William Courtenay's England : An Aristocratic Bishop In The Fourteenth Century, Michael P. Gwaltney

Honors Theses

Despite religious controversy that threatened the church and

endangered the state, William Courtenay, as an aristocratic bishop,

succeeded in preserving the traditional structure of the medieval

English Church. During the second half of the fourtheenth century,

England sustained reversals abroad in the renewed war with France.

The military setbacks aggrevated the domestic unrest, which existed

under the uncertain leadership of senile Edward III and then young

Richard II. Church and state in medieval society were so closely

interwoven by means of a cohesive religion that "any substantial

alteration of the church system could have led to a revolution of a …

Lady Jane Grey The Nine Days Queen : A Study Of The Dynastic Questions, Religious Reforms, And Unique Personalities That Influenced Her Fate, Susan Elizabeth Plunkett Apr 1988

Lady Jane Grey The Nine Days Queen : A Study Of The Dynastic Questions, Religious Reforms, And Unique Personalities That Influenced Her Fate, Susan Elizabeth Plunkett

Honors Theses

Lady Jane Grey's short life was one of constant uncertainty, derogatory remarks from her parents, and manipulation; yet she retained her faith till the end. Her story was intriguing if not for its romance and pathos, then for the way in which it reflected the chaotic polltical, social, and religious tendencies of this period in English history. It was a time of intrigues and conspiracies where the true desire for nothing less than outright greed and a cut-throat willingness to employ any means to attain a goal ran rampant. Her llfe provided a unique perspective from which to view the …

Contingent Time Off : An Incentive Approach To Office Productivity Increases, Larry F. Cluff Jan 1988

Contingent Time Off : An Incentive Approach To Office Productivity Increases, Larry F. Cluff

Master's Theses

Productivity gains in a clerical setting on the order of ten to twenty-five percent can be achieved through the use of contingent time off (CTO) incentives. To test this hypothesis, four clerical groups who performed routine repetitive tasks were given productivity goals of 25% over their respective group's average weekly productivity level. If a group achieves the weekly goal before the end of standard 40 hour work-week, the group of employees will be given time off with full pay based upon a specified formula. Results of the study indicate that CTO can result in productivity increases ranging between 13 and …

Contemporary Reactions To The Popish Plot And The Exclusion Crisis, Elizabeth Breeden Townes Jan 1988

Contemporary Reactions To The Popish Plot And The Exclusion Crisis, Elizabeth Breeden Townes

Master's Theses

It is often said that history is made up of the lies of a man's own times. This thesis looks at the highly controversial years, 1978-81, in England the years of the Popish Plot and Exclusion Crisis, through the eyes of men prominent on both sides of the issues. Much of the analysis of contemporary cannon draws from the words of Gilbert Burnet, John Evelyn, Roger North, Roger L'Estrange, William Temple, and George Savile, Marquis of Halifax. These men were all close to the court or had connections close to the Court, yet they did not see every twist and …
