The study’s purpose was to determine the types and frequencies of interactions between community college faculty and deans/faculty chairs – i.e., faculty immediate supervisors – that are related to higher levels of faculty trust. Also investigated were the relationships between faculty trust and demographic characteristics …

Development Of Forward And Inversion Schemes For Cross-Borehole Ground Penetrating Radar, Donald Jones Jan 2018

Development Of Forward And Inversion Schemes For Cross-Borehole Ground Penetrating Radar, Donald Jones

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tomography is an imaging technique to develop a representation of the internal features of material using a penetrating wave, such as an electromagnetic wave. The calculation method used is an example of an inverse problem, which is a system where the input and the output are known but the internal parameters are not. These parameters can be estimated by understanding the responses of a penetrating wave as it passes through the unknown media. A forward problem is just the opposite; the internal structure and input penetrating wave is known and the output is determined. For both forward and inverse problems, …

Teacher Perspectives Regarding The Pedagogical Practices Most Culturally Responsive To African American Middle School Students, Robert James Mcgill Jan 2018

Teacher Perspectives Regarding The Pedagogical Practices Most Culturally Responsive To African American Middle School Students, Robert James Mcgill

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines teacher’s perspectives regarding the classroom strategies,

behaviors, and approaches they believed best support the development of African American students. Educator perceptions are valuable to understand because perceptions and attitudes undergird behavior and practices. This study focused on perceptions of teachers toward pedagogical strategies, approaches, and teacher behaviors that perceived to best support African American students because of the persisting achievement gap between African American students and their White, middle class counterparts.

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy was used as the theoretical framework for this study as it describes approaches to teaching students from historically marginalized groups in ways that …

Priming out-groups and taking the perspective of out-group members increases implicit and explicit identification with out-groups. Because the popularity of video games has increased dramatically over the past few decades and they have become an influential form of media, the current study investigated video games as another potential strategy to increase identification with and reduce prejudice against out-groups. Specifically, I investigated how manipulating the sexual orientation of the video game character participants used influenced implicit and explicit identification with homosexuals and implicit and explicit prejudice against homosexuals. Additionally, I investigated whether implicit and explicit identification with homosexuals would mediate the …

Spatial Variation In Fishery Exploitation Of Mature Female Blue Crabs (C. Sapidus) In Chesapeake Bay, Corey Travis Corrick Jan 2018

Spatial Variation In Fishery Exploitation Of Mature Female Blue Crabs (C. Sapidus) In Chesapeake Bay, Corey Travis Corrick

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

From 2008 to 2012, the total U.S. commercial landings of blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896) averaged over 173 million lbs. Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries are important contributors to this fishery, providing greater than 30% of national commercial landings annually. In Chesapeake Bay, C. sapidus exhibits a complex life cycle in which mated females migrate to the saline waters of the Bay mouth to spawn. During migration, females can traverse multiple management jurisdictions, complicating effective management of this important fishery. Sustained declines in harvest have led to management strategies focused on protecting the female spawning stock in an …

Hard Copy Versus #Hashtag: Examining The Channels Of Terrorist Propaganda, Evan Copello Jan 2018

Hard Copy Versus #Hashtag: Examining The Channels Of Terrorist Propaganda, Evan Copello

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, terrorism and radicalization has been a consistent issue that many countries have faced. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been the most recent in a long trail of organizations that have sought to strike terror against the western world. However, ISIS is distinguished from other groups, like Al-Qaeda, in that ISIS supports a complex propaganda machine. Although ISIS is not the first organization to use the social media platform, they are the first to use it with such diversity. The two main channels that ISIS uses to spread their propaganda messages are through social …

The Truth Is Out There: The Use Of Conspiracy Theories By Radical Violent Extremist Organizations, Gregory Rousis Jan 2018

The Truth Is Out There: The Use Of Conspiracy Theories By Radical Violent Extremist Organizations, Gregory Rousis

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper sought to examine conspiracy theory (CT) use across three types of groups: radical violent extremists (RVE), non-violent extremists, and moderates. Using the theory of significance quest, or the desire for one’s life to have meaning (Kruglanski, Chen, Dechesne, Fishman, & Orehek, 2009), I sought to determine whether RVE groups were more likely to use CTs, invoke need for cognitive closure (NFCC) via the use of time pressure, elicit anomie, and promote significance quest through violence than the other groups. Using text analysis software, I pulled passages from six groups – two from each level of extremism - that …

Development Of A One-Way Coupled Diffraction/Trapped Air Model For Predicting Wave Loading On Bridge Superstructure Under Water Wave Attack, Christian Hillary Matemu Jan 2018

Development Of A One-Way Coupled Diffraction/Trapped Air Model For Predicting Wave Loading On Bridge Superstructure Under Water Wave Attack, Christian Hillary Matemu

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, a number of researchers have applied various computational methods to study wind wave and tsunami forcing on bridge superstructure problems. Usually, these computational analyses rely upon application of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) codes. While CFD models may provide reasonable results, their disadvantage is that they tend to be computationally expensive. During this study, an alternative computational method was explored in which a previously-developed diffraction model was combined with a previously-developed trapped air model under worst-case wave loading conditions (i.e. when the water surface was at the same elevation as the bottom bridge chord elevation). The governing equations …

Tetratricopeptide 39c (Ttc39c) Is Upregulated During Skeletal Muscle Atrophy And Is Necessary For Muscle Cell Differentiation, Caleb Hayes

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ttc39c has been identified as a novel gene in skeletal muscle that is upregulated in response to neurogenic atrophy in mice. Quantitative PCR and Western blot analysis confirmed that Ttc39c is expressed in both proliferating and differentiated muscle cells. Furthermore, comparison of Ttc39c expression in undifferentiated and differentiated C2C12 cells demonstrated that Ttc39c levels peak in early differentiation, but decreases as cells become fully differentiated myotubes. The transcriptional regulation of Ttc39c was examined by cloning promoter fragments of the gene and fusing it with the SEAP reporter gene. The Ttc39c reporter gene constructs were transfected into muscle …

Treatment Analysis Of A Captive Male Jaguar (Panthera Onca), Megan Colleen Morris Jan 2018

Treatment Analysis Of A Captive Male Jaguar (Panthera Onca), Megan Colleen Morris

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Large carnivores in human care have been reported to engage in stereotypic behaviors. Such behavior is thought to be correlated with high stress levels, in part, due to captive environments limiting opportunities for functional consequences and environmental stimuli. Moreover, there are several arguments stating that stereotypic behaviors can be indicative of poor welfare, as they can often have severe negative emotional and physical effects on the animal. The first portion of this study included a five-phase treatment analysis which evaluated whether environmental manipulations decrease the frequency of stereotypic behaviors including pacing, over-grooming and tail-sucking exhibited by a single male jaguar …
