A Mixed Method Approach To Collegiate Aviation Risk Assessment For Dual Cross-Country Flights At The John D. Odegard School Of Aerospace Sciences, Paula Renee Carlson
A Mixed Method Approach To Collegiate Aviation Risk Assessment For Dual Cross-Country Flights At The John D. Odegard School Of Aerospace Sciences, Paula Renee Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
Risk is unavoidable within aviation. It is not possible to eliminate all risks, but rather to mitigate risks and the potential outcomes that a risk could cause to occur. The University of North Dakota utilizes a risk assessment form that is potentially inadequate in its ability to properly assess the risk of a flight as compared to the risk perceived by the pilots that will conduct the flight. The purpose of this study was to create a more accurate preflight risk assessment form to evaluate the potential risks that could occur on a cross-country training flight and to determine the …
An Evaluation Of The Relationships Between Safety Management System Intiatives, Transformational Safety Leadership, Self-Efficacy, Safety Behavior And Safety Related Events Mediated By Safety Motivation In Collegiate Aviation, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum
Theses and Dissertations
The study conceptualized Safety Management System (SMS) initiative, self-efficacy, and transformational safety leadership as constructs that relates to safety behavior (measured by safety compliance and safety participation) when mediated by safety motivation using a concurrent-triangulation approach. The study also evaluated the relationship between safety behavior and safety -related events. Structural equation modeling techniques was used to derive a final measurement model that fit the empirical data and was used to test the study hypotheses. Utilizing a sample of 282 collegiate flight students and instructors from a large public university, a 46-item survey was conducted to measure respondent’s perceptions on the …
The Meaning Of Nursing Education As Described By Students With Learning Disabilities, Jacqueline Lee Reep-Jarmin
The Meaning Of Nursing Education As Described By Students With Learning Disabilities, Jacqueline Lee Reep-Jarmin
Theses and Dissertations
The numbers of students with learning disabilities (LD) in post-secondary education settings is rising (National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), 2016). The Americans with Disabilities Act, Amendments Act was passed in 2008, since that time little research has been done to reflect any impact of the original ADA (1990) being amended. Research is needed about the experiences of students with learning disabilities in higher education, and more specifically nursing education. The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the lived experience of nursing education from the perspective of students with learning disabilities, and delineate the essence of …
Verbal Morphology And Grammatical Aspect In Sarikoli, Timothy S. Palmer
Verbal Morphology And Grammatical Aspect In Sarikoli, Timothy S. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
Grammatical aspect in Sarikoli, an Eastern Iranian (Pamir) language, has never been adequately described. This work fills a gap in the descriptive literature, beginning with a straightforward restatement of verbal morphosyntax, and moving to a discussion of verb stems and their uses. Verb stems in Sarikoli include the infinitive, imperfective, perfective, and perfect. Additional morphemes discussed in this work include the durative clitic, stative (resultative) suffix, cessative suffix, and agreement suffixes and clitics.
Sarikoli verbal morphology encodes aspect, not tense. The major grammatical aspects of Sarikoli include perfective, imperfective, perfect, and durative. Verb stems and other aspectual marking in context …
A Study Evaluating If Targeted Training For Startle Effect Can Improve Pilot Reactions In Handling Unexpected Situations In A Flight Simulator, Michael Gillen
A Study Evaluating If Targeted Training For Startle Effect Can Improve Pilot Reactions In Handling Unexpected Situations In A Flight Simulator, Michael Gillen
Theses and Dissertations
Recent airline accidents point to a crew’s failure to make correct and timely decisions following a sudden and unusual event that startled the crew. This study sought to determine if targeted training could augment decision making during a startle event. Following a startle event cognitive function is impaired for a short duration of time (30-90 seconds). In aviation, critical decisions are often required to be made during this brief, but critical, time frame.
A total of 40 volunteer crews (80 individual pilots) were solicited from a global U.S. passenger airline. Crews were briefed that they would fly a profile in …
Regional Airline Pilot Commute: How Commuting By Air Affects Pilots' Satisfaction With Life, Andrew David Kleinfehn
Regional Airline Pilot Commute: How Commuting By Air Affects Pilots' Satisfaction With Life, Andrew David Kleinfehn
Theses and Dissertations
At a time of increased use and competitiveness amongst U.S. regional airlines, and the growing pilot shortage, regional air carriers and pilots alike lack proper understanding how pilot commutes by airplane affect satisfaction with life. There are numerous studies on how commuting by vehicle, bicycle, mass transit system, or walking (traditional commute) to and from work affects one’s satisfaction with life. There are no identified studies which investigate regional airline pilots’ commute by airplane and its affect on satisfaction with life. The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge on regional airline pilot commutes, how commuting affects regional pilots’ …
The Effects Of Time Of Day And Circadian Rhythm On Performance During Variable Levels Of Cognitive Workload, Kathryn A. Feltman
The Effects Of Time Of Day And Circadian Rhythm On Performance During Variable Levels Of Cognitive Workload, Kathryn A. Feltman
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the effects of time of day of testing on a simulated aviation task. The tasks required the participants to engage in multitasking while electroencephalogram (EEG) data was collected to objectively measure participants’ workload. Task demands were altered throughout the testing period to expose participants to both high and low workload conditions. Additionally, individual differences in circadian rhythm were explored by assessing participants’ circadian typology. No significant differences in performance were found resulting from time of day differences. However, performance and EEG differences were found based on phase of testing and workload manipulations. Subjective workload measures were …
Fatigue Mitigation Effects Of En-Route Napping On Commercial Airline Pilots Flying International Routes, Thomas Bunting
Fatigue Mitigation Effects Of En-Route Napping On Commercial Airline Pilots Flying International Routes, Thomas Bunting
Theses and Dissertations
The introduction of ultra-long range commercial aircraft and the evolution of the commercial airline industry has provided new opportunities for air carriers to fly longer range international route segments while deregulation, industry consolidation, and the constant drive to reduce costs wherever possible has pressured airline managements to seek more productivity from their pilots. At the same time, advancements in the understanding of human physiology have begun to make their way into flight and duty time regulations and airline scheduling practices. In this complex and ever changing operating environment, there remains an essential need to better understand how these developments, and …

Black Power In A "Lily-White" School: The Black Campus Movement At Concordia College In Moorhead, Minnesota, Daniel D. Cooley
Theses and Dissertations
Between the mid-1950s and through the 1970s, higher educational institutions throughout the United States underwent reforms in the name of what they termed “integration.” For the colleges and universities in the upper Midwest, these reforms included minority student recruitment and the creation of programs oriented towards diversity. Over time, a number of minority students began to act and react to the actions and attitudes of the various administrations, the campuses, and the community, resulting in a demonstration directly connected to the national phenomenon of “The Black Campus Movement,” (BCM) itself a submovement of the larger United States’ Black Power Movement …

Voice In Bugis: An Rrg Perspective, Douglas C. Laskowske
Voice In Bugis: An Rrg Perspective, Douglas C. Laskowske
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes the voice system of Bugis (also known as Buginese), a Western Austronesian language of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Using Role and Reference Grammar as a theoretical framework, I analyze the Bugis voice system as symmetrical in the sense of Arka (2003), with two distinct transitive constructions: actor voice, in which the actor is the privileged syntactic argument (PSA) and undergoer voice, in which the undergoer is the PSA. This contrasts with previous analyses, which have classified Bugis as lacking a symmetrical voice system (Hanson 2003; Jukes 2006). The choice between the two transitive voices in Bugis is determined …
An Acoustic Study Of Kope, Northeast Kiwai, Papua New Guinea, With Preliminary Tonal Analysis, Julia Martin
An Acoustic Study Of Kope, Northeast Kiwai, Papua New Guinea, With Preliminary Tonal Analysis, Julia Martin
Theses and Dissertations
Kope is a dialect of Northeast Kiwai, a language of Papua New Guinea. It exhibits contrast for length on vowels, and a two-level tonal contrast. Measurements were taken from a recording of one speaker, and subjected to statistical tests to determine the relationship between variables of tone, phonemic length, duration, F0, and the first and second formants.
The most consistent effect found is higher F1 on HI-toned vowels, and indeed some measure of correlation between F0 and F1. Another effect, less consistent but still present, is the interaction of length with F2. Duration is found to be heavily influenced by …
