Porter James Mccumber : Evolution Of A Senator, Amy Kathleen Rieger Dec 1993

Porter James Mccumber : Evolution Of A Senator, Amy Kathleen Rieger

Theses and Dissertations

Virtually nothing has been written about the early life and career of Porter James McCumber, who served North Dakota in the United States Senate from 1899-1922. Contributing to the lack of written material about the man is the fact that there are very few sources available concerning his social and political life. He left no official papers, and therefore no clear record of his life. The purpose of this thesis, then, is to illuminate the life and times of McCumber, with a special emphasis on his career in North Dakota through his election to the Senate in 1899. I will …

The Great Tone Split And Central Karen, William G. Kauffman Dec 1993

The Great Tone Split And Central Karen, William G. Kauffman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a comparative reconstruction of the tones and initial consonants of Proto-Central Karen based on the languages Eastern Kayah, Western Kayah, Geba, and Padaung. Other Karen languages are referred to but not studied to the same detail.

The study focuses on the great tone split that affected nearly all the languages of Southeast Asia, including Central Karen. I show that an understanding of the great tone split is crucial if one is to discover the phonological characteristics of Proto-Central Karen syllable-initial consonants.

In agreement with Haudricourt's (1946) analysis of Proto-Karen, I conclude that Proto-Central Karen had three proto-tones …

Production Activity And Performers At The Metropolitan Theatre, Grand Forks, North Dakota 1898 - 1911, Dawn D. Drake

Theses and Dissertations

This study documents and analyzes the production activity and the quality of the celebrity performers appearing at the Metropolitan Theatre in Grand Forks, North Dakota, during the years of 1898 to 1911. The production activity at the theatre is categorized into seven groups of production: legitimate drama, Shakespeare/'classics, melodramas, minstrels, opera/musicals, vaudeville/burlesque and special productions. The quality of performers is judged by their relative status in American theatre history. Both of these elements were, during this period, heavily influenced by the Theatrical Syndicate.

Research for this study includes searching newspaper advertisements and publicity for the productions found in The Grand …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Gender And Specificity Of Information On Diagnosis, Scott W. Sumerall Dec 1993

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Gender And Specificity Of Information On Diagnosis, Scott W. Sumerall

Theses and Dissertations

Results of studies investigating the possible presence of bias in psychotherapy are equivocal. Past studies have not taken into consideration the amount of information provided to clinicians and therefore have varied this dependent variable unsystematically from study to study. The current study explored the effects of the gender of the psychologist, gender of the client, and level of information provided upon which to base decisions on diagnostic and treatment decisions. Three cases varying gender of the client and the amount of information given were mailed to 814 psychologists listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Respondents …

The Effects Of Therapist-Subject Value Similarity On Therapeutic Alliance, Marianne M. Schumacher Dec 1993

The Effects Of Therapist-Subject Value Similarity On Therapeutic Alliance, Marianne M. Schumacher

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present investigation was to add to our understanding of the relationship between therapist-client value similarity and the quality of the therapeutic alliance. The study examined whether therapist-subject congruence on the achievement dimension of the Mental Health Values Questionnaire was predictive of some of the variables shown to contribute to positive therapeutic alliance, such as (1) subjects’ perceptions of a prospective therapist, and (2) subjects’ willingness to disclose sensitive information to a prospective therapist.

Subjects were assigned to a high-achievement or low- achievement group based on the their scores on the achievement dimension of the Mental Health …

Validation Of The Victim Empathy Scale: A Measure Of Emotional Empathy For Victims Of Violent Crime, Martine M. Mizwa Dec 1993

Validation Of The Victim Empathy Scale: A Measure Of Emotional Empathy For Victims Of Violent Crime, Martine M. Mizwa

Theses and Dissertations

Much effort on the part of researchers from all social science disciplines has gone into studying the effect of crime on its victims, their treatment by the criminal justice system, and others who routinely come into contact with them. This research has shown a need for improved treatment of crime victims by service providers and other helpers. Because empathy plays such an important role in mediating an individual's response to another's victimization, reliable methods to evaluate and foster empathy are needed. Increased empathy for victims on the part of police officers, prosecutors, health care providers, friends and family, could help …

Imyan Tehit Phonology, Ronald Gerhard Hesse Dec 1993

Imyan Tehit Phonology, Ronald Gerhard Hesse

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a description of the phonology of Imyan Tehit, a West Papuan language of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, couched in the framework of templatic syllable theory espoused by Junko Itô. It is based on 18 months (1989-1991) of linguistic fieldwork, in which the author and his family lived among the Tehit of Haha village, learning their language and culture.

Imyan Tehit has a maximal syllable template [CCVVC], obligatory onsets except word-initially, and a rare liquid coda. Syllable onset, nucleus, and coda are shown to be equally autonomous sub-syllabic structures. If they are complex or branching, they attract syllable stress. …

During the fitness training phase, subjects' blood pressures and p"1se rates were recorded before and after each exercise session, which occurred three times per week. All subjects walked for .-0 minutes per …

Norwegians, Socialism And The Nonpartisan League In North Dakota, 1904-1920: How Red Was Their Protest?, Daron William Olson Dec 1993

Norwegians, Socialism And The Nonpartisan League In North Dakota, 1904-1920: How Red Was Their Protest?, Daron William Olson

Theses and Dissertations

Although its history has been largely ignored by scholars, North Dakota’s radical period, the socialist and Nonpartisan League years between 1904 and 1920, has been the exception. To explain the success of these left-wing movements, scholars have developed a number of theories. One of the most popular theories attributes the success of leftist political movements to the large number of Norwegians who resided in the state. According to this interpretation, Norwegian immigrants brought socialism and radicalism from Norway and transplanted it to the New World. Norwegians in North Dakota, this theory explains, were particularly radical and they became the vanguard …

Interrogatives In Yanomám, Richard A. Thiele Dec 1993

Interrogatives In Yanomám, Richard A. Thiele

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a general linguistic description of yes-no and information questions in Yanomám (a member of the Yanomami language family of Brazil and Venezuela) in the descriptive/typological tradition, including morphosyntax and semantics, appropriate responses, certain discourse-pragmatic conditions of their use (such as bias and focus), and intonation patterns.

Some things in the Yanomám language that are typologically unusual are an information question system that utilizes just one interrogative word, interaction of temporal-evidential particles with questions, and the occurrence of hortative constructions in questions.

My sources of information include the limited published works and articles on the language, previously unpublished …

A Controlled Comparison Of Aerobic Exercise And Behavioral Treatment For Recurrent Tension Headache, Marty Paul Witucki Dec 1993

A Controlled Comparison Of Aerobic Exercise And Behavioral Treatment For Recurrent Tension Headache, Marty Paul Witucki

Theses and Dissertations

Tension headache is a widespread problem, with an estimated lifetime prevalence rate of 69% for males and 88% for females. Empirical evidence supports the clinical observation that daily stress is a powerful precipitant of tension headaches. Research also supports the contention that tension headache sufferers tend to appraise and cope with daily stressors in ways which exacerbate or prolong this stress. Because aerobic exercise (EX) has been implicated as a useful stress relieving agent, this study examined the use of aerobic exercise as a treatment for tension headache. A comparison treatment consisting of progressive relaxation, stress management, and biofeedback (PR), …

The Nuclei Of Discontent, B. Jane Overmoe Dec 1993

Mere Babes In The Woods: Teaching And Learning In The Native American Classroom, Scott Lyons Dec 1993

Mere Babes In The Woods: Teaching And Learning In The Native American Classroom, Scott Lyons

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a good deal of talk about "'multicultural education" in the past few years; at the center of these discussions are issues of ethics, politics, and values. What does it mean to be "multicultural"? How does one's culture figure into pedagogical situations—as a teacher? as a student? How should these complex social and historical backgrounds be utilized at the university? Finally, what are the cultural costs of a university education for students, especially those students from historically oppressed cultural backgrounds?

This study specifically examines the situation of Native American students in the university writing classroom. Drawing upon many …

Effects Of Counselor-Subject Value Congruence On Willingness To Self-Disclose In An Analogue Psychotherapy Interview Situation, Lance V. Suan Dec 1993

Effects Of Counselor-Subject Value Congruence On Willingness To Self-Disclose In An Analogue Psychotherapy Interview Situation, Lance V. Suan

Theses and Dissertations

A substantial amount of research has been directed towards identifying particular factors which contribute toward a positive psychotherapy outcome. One variable which appears to positively influence psychotherapy outcome is the "therapeutic alliance," or the establishment of a positive working relationship between client and counselor. The present study investigated the therapeutic alliance as a function of the degree of agreement between client and therapist about Affective Control values, or beliefs concerning whether emotional expression constitutes healthy or unhealthy emotional adjustment.

Subjects consisted of 111 undergraduate students; 64 subjects were identified as high scorers on the Affective Control Scale of the Mental …

Incubation Temperature Affects Body Size, Energy Reserves, And Sex Of Hatchling Alligators, John Allsteadt Aug 1993

Incubation Temperature Affects Body Size, Energy Reserves, And Sex Of Hatchling Alligators, John Allsteadt

Theses and Dissertations

I investigated the effects of incubation temperature, clutch, and sex on the morphometries, mass, and energy reserves of hatchling alligators. The effect of incubation temperature on hatchling genitalia was also studied. I evaluated and tested a method for determining the sex of hatchling alligators. Large scale incubation of alligator eggs allowed a study of inter-clutch variation in sex ratio of hatchlings incubated at the same temperature.

Aingator eggs were collected within several days of laying in June, 1991, at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge, southwestern Louisiana, USA. Three clutches of eggs were incubated over the viable range of temperatures and the resulting …

Effects Of Pre- And Post- Trial Caffeine Treatment On Memory For Prose, Malva F. Walters Aug 1993

Effects Of Pre- And Post- Trial Caffeine Treatment On Memory For Prose, Malva F. Walters

Theses and Dissertations

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant which is considered part of the normal diet. One approach to understanding whether ingestion of caffeine influences human cognition is to examine the effects of caffeine on memory.

This study examined the effects of caffeine ingested both before and after a prose learning task. Two hundred-forty-five subjects (121 males, 124 females) were divided into two groups. One group received 0, 2, or 4 mg/kg of caffeine before hearing three narrative prose passages. The second group received 0, 2, or 4 mg/kg of caffeine after hearing the prose passages. All subjects returned 24 hours …

Menstrual Hygiene Product Use And The Incidence Of Abnormal Papanicolaou Smear Results, Sue K. Goebel Aug 1993

Menstrual Hygiene Product Use And The Incidence Of Abnormal Papanicolaou Smear Results, Sue K. Goebel

Theses and Dissertations

Today the majority of females fifteen years and older have used tampons. Since their introduction in 1933, tampons have changed greatly in composition: more absorbent synthetic fibers have replaced natural fibers, plastic applicators have joined cardboard, and some contain a fragrance. While changes in vaginal mucosa including inflammatory changes, lacerations, and micro-ulcerations as a result of tampon use have been documented, no research examining the use of menstrual hygiene products and their effect on cervical cytology was located.

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between menstrual hygiene product use and the incidence of abnormal Pap smear …

Boson Stars In The Brans-Dicke Gravitational Theories, Mark Gunderson Aug 1993

Boson Stars In The Brans-Dicke Gravitational Theories, Mark Gunderson

Theses and Dissertations

Boson stars consist of a system of self gravitating scalar fields (bosons) which form a macroscopic quantum state and is one of several dark matter candidates. When considering cosmological models based on the Brans-Dicke gravitational theories, one question that must be addressed is whether certain types of dark matter candidates, possibly boson stars, can exist in the Brans-Dicke gravitational theories. We show in this paper that at least one type of dark matter - boson stars— can exist in these gravitational theories.

For purposes of comparison, we introduce a boson star model in general relativity with a quartic coupling interaction …

Multiculturalism In Predominantly White College Composition Classrooms: A Reconsideration Of Teaching Approaches And Rationales, Doreen Staerke-Meyerring Aug 1993

Multiculturalism In Predominantly White College Composition Classrooms: A Reconsideration Of Teaching Approaches And Rationales, Doreen Staerke-Meyerring

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis explores the problem of multicultural education in predominantly white college composition classrooms. As a rule, proponents of multicultural education in the composition class envision ethnically and racially diverse learning environments. Since multiculturalism in these learning environments tends to reflect the life experiences of the students and thus is likely to enhance their learning experience, multiculturalism is approached as an intrinsic part of the students' experience. The teaching methods for multiculturalism in composition developed on the basis of these ethnically and racially diverse learning environments are then often transferred to predominantly white classrooms. However, this study finds that in …

The Development Of An Interpersonal-Developmental-Existential Assessment Inventory For Determining Therapeutic Focus, Charles A. Pap Aug 1993

The Development Of An Interpersonal-Developmental-Existential Assessment Inventory For Determining Therapeutic Focus, Charles A. Pap

Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly, insurance companies, legislators, and funding agencies have examined the efficacy of psychotherapy and counseling, and have moved towards the briefer forms of therapy. Though some clinicians resist a move to greater accountability, the majority are concerned with providing an effective service to individuals, couples, and families experiencing biopsychosocial difficulties. This study involved the development of an instrument that will assist therapists in determining a therapeutic focus, which is seen as an important component in brief psychotherapy.

There were two distinct phases to this study. In Phase One, intake interviews at a large Midwestern university counseling center were audiotaped. Using …

A Grammar Sketch Of Dəməna, Cindy S. Williams Aug 1993

A Grammar Sketch Of Dəməna, Cindy S. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a description of the morphology and syntax of Dəməna, a Chibchan language of northern Colombia. Dəməna is an SOV language with postpositions and genitive-nominal, noun-adjective word orders.

Unusual features of Dəməna include: case marking suffixes which occur as phrasal affixes, a fusion of person marking and deixis in verbal suffixes, and interaction of temporal and special deixis on question suffixes.

Dəməna exhibits more agreement than would be expected. Causative constructions may contain two different direct object person agreement prefixes side by side on a single verb. In cases of advancement to direct object, the same argument may …
