Forecasting Grain Equipment Sales, Russel R. Campbell Dec 1983

Forecasting Grain Equipment Sales, Russel R. Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to identify and discuss variables that have an effect on the sale of grain handling equipment. A case study format was used to present the analysis. The problem addressed in the study is the inability of the case study company to forecast sales. It was hypothesized that sales could be predicted using data from previous years. Multiple regression was preformed using two independent variables: the number of acres of corn harvested for grain, and the government loan rates for on farm storage facilities, with past sales of the company being the dependent variable. Other …

Test Task And Item Similarity Factors Affect Memory And Eye Movements During Picture Recognition, David Paul Lommen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore how recog nition memory for pictures and eye movements vary depend ing on the type of test and the nature of the "related" distractor items. Prior research suggested that manipula tion of test type and distractor similarity both influ ence recognition memory. The present study crossed test type and composition (kind of distractors) in a 2 X 2 design.

Forty-eight undergraduates viewed an input list of 58 scenic, color photographs of cityscapes and landscapes. The memory test was composed of 12 "Same Photo" items, each identical to input list photographs; 12 "Related" …

Terrain, Climate, And Vegetation In The Badlands Of The Little Missouri River In North Dakota, Paula Himmelheber Lee Dec 1983

Terrain, Climate, And Vegetation In The Badlands Of The Little Missouri River In North Dakota, Paula Himmelheber Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The climate of southwestern North Dakota is typical for the Great Plains of the central and west-central United States. The Rocky Mountains influence the climatic condi tions by providing an orographic obstacle to air circula tion. Statistical analysis through correlation and regres sion of 30 years of climatic data from southwestern North Dakota and nearby stations in South Dakota and Montana is consistent with climatic relationships that have been de fined by previous research. The influence of the Rocky Mountains is quantified through a variable that represents the linear distance from each weather station to the front range.

The natural …

Annular Flow In A Low - Pressure Steam - Water System, Arnfinn Borch Lund Dec 1983

Annular Flow In A Low - Pressure Steam - Water System, Arnfinn Borch Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Two-phase annular flow is an important aspect of two- phase flow. Three different models, Ghosal, Wallis, and Levy models, were used to calculate the pressure drop in an nular two-phase flow. The calculated pressure drop was com pared with a set of experimental data. The pressure range of the data was 350 to 850 kPa. Steam quality varied from 4.0 to 52.7 percent, while the total mass flux varied from 245.4 to 2303.7 kg/m^,s.

The predictions of the Wallis model were found to agree best with the data. This model appears to be well developed with respect to the hydrodynamic …

Personality, Sex, And The Neuropsychology Of Attention, Peter A. Williamson Dec 1983

Personality, Sex, And The Neuropsychology Of Attention, Peter A. Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

The influences of sex and personality on attentional style were examined in two neuropsychological studies in which perfor mance and event-related potentials (ERP's) were employed. Pribram and McGuinness1 (1975) conceptions of Activation and Arousal were recast in a lateralized framework in which the former was seen as characteristic of left hemisphere function while the latter was identified more closely with the right hemisphere. Four equal groups of nine subjects were selected on the basis of sex and ex treme extraversion scores (I-E), while controlling for neuroticism, to participate in two lateralized attentional tasks. The first, a vigilance task designed to …

An Evaluation Of Bacterial Flagella Staining Procedures, Dan Dalan Dec 1983

An Evaluation Of Bacterial Flagella Staining Procedures, Dan Dalan

Theses and Dissertations

Five currently used flagella stains and staining procedures have been studied and evaluated. A staining method that is simplest, most reliable, and highly reproducible, especially for beginning students and technicians has been assembled and recommended.

Four important variables necessary for successful flagella staining were stressed. These variables are: growth of organisms, smear pre paration, staining procedure, and reagent stability.

Two important procedures which are part of some, but not all of the flagella staining methods studied are strongly recommended. One is the practice of enclosing a smear with wax pencil and adding a known, constant volume of dye. An effective …

Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus: The Synthesis Of Success And Failure In Adrian Leverkuhn's Struggle For Truth As It Is Found In His Use Of 12-Tone Music And In His Application Of The Music-Philosophical Theories Of Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno, James F. Gurney Dec 1983

Gurney

Theses and Dissertations

The two powers of Adrian Leverkuhn's life's struggle in Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus, his hunger for and failure to rationally obtain truth as well as his unabating truth-ignoring need for artistic production, eventually cause a tremendous dissonance within him which ultimately leads to his insanity. This struggle, though destined for dissonant failure, nevertheless becomes a successful expression of Leverkuhn's oneness both with all humanity's struggle for truth and with modern humanity's consciousness of its failure to find truth. Leverkuhn's lifelong struggle is best represented in the novel through Leverkuhn's musical compositions and in them, through his fictional development and use …

Cognitive Ability And Cognitive Style In The Comprehension And Expression Of Emotion, Carole H. Hayne Dec 1983

Cognitive Ability And Cognitive Style In The Comprehension And Expression Of Emotion, Carole H. Hayne

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the ability to comprehend and express affect by non-verbal means. Darwin (1872) suggested that the non-verbal communication of emotion had a biological basis. Hughlings-Jackson (1879) emphasized the relationship between cerebral functioning and the ability to communicate affect. Neuropsychological research suggests that a major neuronal network located in the right hemisphere supports non-verbal communication. The evidence indicates the localization of expressive skills in the anterior cortex and comprehensive skills in the posterior cortex.

In the present study 31 behavioral tasks comprised a scale to assess the ability to communicate affect by non-verbal means. The tasks assessed the comprehension …

Protecting The Medium-Sized Buisness Computer, Michael J. Doonan

Theses and Dissertations

Computers were first introduced into our lives in 1944, when the first one was designed and built for the Army. They were able to process simple information faster than man, allowing him to concentrate on more difficult problems. Progress came quickly and the first commercial use of the computer was in 1954.

Today, computers are recognized as having a tremendous influence on our daily lives. They have been successfully incorporated into almost every aspect of human endeavor.

Computer crime is an unfortunate reality in today's world. If the crime is detected at all, the loss may very well run into …

Release Of Histone Lysine Methyltransferases From Rat Brain Chromatin By Nuclease Digestion, Dale V. Onisk Aug 1983

Release Of Histone Lysine Methyltransferases From Rat Brain Chromatin By Nuclease Digestion, Dale V. Onisk

Theses and Dissertations

The histone lysine methyltransferases catalyze the transfer of methyl groups from S-adenosyl-L-methionine to specific ε-N-lysyl residues in the N-terminal regions of histones H3 and H4. These enzymes are located exclusively within the nucleus and are firmly bound to chromatin. The chromosomal bound enzymes do not methylate free or loosely bound histones. However, histones H3 and H4 associated within the nucleosomes are methylated.

The enzymes were extracted by limited digestion (12-16%) of chromosomal DNA from rapidly proliferating rat brain chromatin with micrococcal nuclease. The enzymes were further purified by gel filtration, ammonium sulfate fractionation and DEAE-cellulose chromatography. The histone methyltransferases were …

Argumentation In Romans 1-11, Mary Margaret Walker Aug 1983

Argumentation In Romans 1-11, Mary Margaret Walker

Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses some of the problems of the Book of Romans in Koine Greek as a source text for a translation, particularly into non-Indo-European languages which do not share common cultural, grammatical or rhetorical conventions with the original audience for which Romans was written. A basic question broached was, "What is argumentation - as a discourse genre, as an act, as a pattern of grammatical reflexes?"

The discourse grammar model of Dr. R. E. Longacre was the main point of departure. Important secondary sources were the work of Teun A. van Dijk on macrostructure; the semantic structure analysis method …

Comparison Of Walleye: Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum (Mitchell), Ecology And Biology From Three Discrete Areas Of Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Randy J. Hiltner

Theses and Dissertations

Various aspects of the ecology and biology of the walleye were examined from three discrete areas of Lake Sakakawea during the summer of 1982. Spatial distribution, predator-prey relationships and species association data were procured by simultaneously placing experimental and 0.5 in mesh gill nets at three depth ranges: 0-10 ft, 11-20 ft and 21-40 ft. Temporal distribution data were collected by lifting and resetting the gill nets approximately every six hours. Four time periods were used: 0600-1200 h, 1200-1800 h, 1800-2400 h and 2400-0600 h. Walleye age, growth and food habit data were also collected from the fish caught.

The Construct Of Personality And Hemispheric Usage, Steven L. Dawson Aug 1983

The Construct Of Personality And Hemispheric Usage, Steven L. Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

Studies on the differential contributions of the cerebral hemispheres to human experience and behavior have demonstrated that the hemispheres are lateralized for cognitive strategies and, possibly, for emotional valance. Recently researchers have demonstrated that the hemispheres may also be lateralized for certain personality disorders and personality traits. Using lateral eye movements as a measure of hemispheric activation, Dawson, Tucker, and Swenson (in preparation) have shown that certain self-description questionnaires may serve to discriminate subjects who characteristically utilize one hemisphere over the other, regardless of the relative adaptiveness of the cognitive strengths of that hemisphere for the task at hand.

Breeding Ecology And Productivity Of Red-Necked Grebes In Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Manitoba, Kenneth D. De Smet

Theses and Dissertations

The breeding biology and productivity of the Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena) were studied in Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Manitoba, during 1980 and 1981. Arrival dates ranged from mid-April to early June. Pre-nesting intervals ranged from 11 o 42 days and averaged about 20 days. Egg-laying commenced in early May and extended until mid-July. The average clutch size (4.95 eggs) was much larger than those found in other studies of the Red-necked Grebe in North America.

Although the nest success rate was low (26.2%), most failed pairs (83.5%) initiated at least 1 replacement clutch, and more than one-half of the observed …

The Role Of Specific Attentional Influences In Anxiety And Perception, Doug G. Heck Aug 1983

The Role Of Specific Attentional Influences In Anxiety And Perception, Doug G. Heck

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the rela tionships between trait anxiety, visual attention and perceptual closure. A neuropsychological model proposed by Pribram and McGuinness (1975) and elaborated by Tucker and Williamson (in press) is used as a basis for the con cepts of attention, arousal, and cognition used in this paper. Specific, lateralized attentional systems, that of Activation and Arousal, are described and implicated in influencing perceptual closure in trait-anxious subjects. It was hypothesized that high trait-anxious subjects would perform less successfully on the closure task than the low trait-anxious subjects would, while exhibiting a higher eye-movement …

The Effect Of Federal Reserve Interest Rates To Real-Estate Volume And Prices, Dennis K. Allen Jul 1983

The Effect Of Federal Reserve Interest Rates To Real-Estate Volume And Prices, Dennis K. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

This paper concerns two premises: One, that higher interest rates cause lower home sales and selling prices, and two, that Minot is typical of the national pattern and is as responsive to interest rate changes. The task to prove the premises was three-fold: First, the literature was accessed to determine the strength of the opinions of the first premise. Second, statistics were gathered from national and local sources and adjusted for conformity and economic reality. Third, the statistics were compared, local to national, both visually and mathematically to determine the alignment of the two statistical sets.

There was overwhelming literary …
