The Importance Of The Observation Well Program To North Dakota, Donald G. Adolphson

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The following is a report of the importance of the observation wells espically for North Dakota, based on investigations conducted by the United States Geological Survey, under the Observation Well Program.

Wind Canyon Sand Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Gerald R. Baugh Jan 1956

Wind Canyon Sand Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Gerald R. Baugh

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The lenticular body of sandstone in Wind Canyon Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota, displays a variety of conditions that lend themselves to immaturity. It is these conditions and their genetic relations that the author pursued.

The Relationship Of Ground-Water To The Dishcarge Of The Sheyenne River Between Sheyenne And Warwick, North Dakota, Terry H. Overmoe Jan 1956

The Relationship Of Ground-Water To The Dishcarge Of The Sheyenne River Between Sheyenne And Warwick, North Dakota, Terry H. Overmoe

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The discharge of the Sheyenne River greatly increases between the government check points at Sheyenne and near Warwick because of ground water in-flow. It is probable that this water lost to the stream could be controlled and used by towns of the area.

Size Measurement Of Fine Sediments By Electrical Resistance, D. H. Mikkelson Jan 1956

Size Measurement Of Fine Sediments By Electrical Resistance, D. H. Mikkelson

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The purpose of the experiment herein reported is to establish whether or not a correlation exists between the settling velocities of the fine particles of sediments and the change in resistance to the flow of electricity through a fluid containing the sediments. It was assumed that the sediments would behave according to Stokes’ Law regarding the velocities of their settling, and the pipette method of analysis was used to measure the particle size with which to compare the results of measuring change of resistance.

The equipment used in measuring the change of resistance as the particles settled was a 1,000 …

Radioactive Well Logging, Elmer J. Klaudt Jan 1956

Radioactive Well Logging, Elmer J. Klaudt

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Radioactivity properties of many substances make radioactivity well logging possible. The Gamma Ray Curve records natural radiation; the Neutron Curve records induced radiation. In general the Gamma Ray Curve records formation types while the Neutron Curve records fluid content of the rocks. The Radioactivity Logs are recorded on continuous roll graph paper by an automatic pen recorder. The laboratory-developed Neutron Curve correction charts presented are an aid in accurate interpretation of well logs. Besides recording well logs, the Radioactivity Log is useful in solving many of the problems connected with petroleum work.

A Landslide Near Oslo, Minnesota, Roger C. Zejdlik Jan 1956

A Landslide Near Oslo, Minnesota, Roger C. Zejdlik

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

A landslide occurred on the bank of the Red River two and a half miles north of Oslo, Minnesota on the Minnesota side. The area involved in the slide compromises about 45,000 square feet. A mass-movement occurred which was vertical but largely horizontal. A block roughly 45 by 100 feet dropped on a skid plane between two related blocks which gave the effect of "graben" structure. Ath the same instant, however, a large mud bar roughly 150 feet long was pushed up in the river reducing the channel to about half its normal size. The cause of the slide was …

Sedimentary Size Analysis Of Glacial Deposits In The South-Half Of Kidder County, North Dakota, Richard D. Hendrickson Jan 1956

Sedimentary Size Analysis Of Glacial Deposits In The South-Half Of Kidder County, North Dakota, Richard D. Hendrickson

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

This paper deals with the sedimentary size analysis of glacial deposits in the southern half of Kidder County, North Dakota. An introduction giving a general description and location of the over-all area from which the samples were taken, precedes the methods of analysis. The analysis includes the separation of the particles into size groups, and the explanation of the data by means of histograms, frequency and cumulative curves. The analysis showed there was some similarity within different types of deposits which could be expressed mathematically.

The Geology Of The Grassy Butte Area, Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Elmer G. Meldahl

Theses and Dissertations

The Grassy Butte area lies in southern McKenzie County, just southwest of the deepest part of the Williston Basin, and is bordered on the north by the North Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park.

the purpose of this investigation was: (1) to prepare a geological map of the area; (2) to map the geologic structure of the area; (3) to measure and describe detailed stratigraphic sections which would aid in correlating rock units in this area with previously described rock units in adjacent areas; (4) to indicate lignite beds of possible economic value.

The western three-fifths of the …
