Explosive Electron Emission And The Characteristics Of High-Current Electron Flow, Robert Kelley Parker Jul 1973

Explosive Electron Emission And The Characteristics Of High-Current Electron Flow, Robert Kelley Parker

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Within the past several years, an increasing effort has been concentrated on the application of high-current, relativistic electron beams to the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion. Initially, this effort had been impeded by limitations in the high-voltage and pulsed-power technology required to develop pulsed, high-power electron accelerators. These technologies have been developed to a level where powers on the order of 1013 watts are now available for time durations of approximately 100 nanoseconds. With the initial limitations removed, the emphasis has more recently been centered on controlling and concentrating these beams to achieve the parameters necessary for fusion experimentation. …

Fast Neutron Effects On Time Delay Occuring In Gallium Arsenide Laser Diodes., James Owen Schroeder Jul 1973

Fast Neutron Effects On Time Delay Occuring In Gallium Arsenide Laser Diodes., James Owen Schroeder

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A study has been made on the effects of fast neutron irradiation on time delay occurring in diffused GaAs laser diodes operating at 77° K and 300° K. Measurements were performed at 300° K prior to irradiation and thence after successive exposure to neutron irradiation to a maximum of about 1.2 x 10^14 nvt (>10 KeV). At 77° K, measurements were limited to a pre-irradiation characterization and a characterization after the final irradiation. A double acceptor model is used to account for the observed changes in the delay characteristics as a result of both temperature changes and neutron irradiation. …

Growth Studies On The Shigellae, Margaret Jane Gillespie Jul 1973

Growth Studies On The Shigellae, Margaret Jane Gillespie

Biology ETDs

The growth of 20 strains of Shigella, representing the four species, was evaluated by the inoculation of pure cultures of single strains on Tryptic Soy agar (TSA) and four selective plating media. Colony counts of 18 strains were highest on TSA. While recovery on MacConkey (MAC) and Xylose Lysine Desoxycholate (XLD) agars was intermediate, very low counts occurred on Desoxycholate Citrate (DCA) and Salmonella-Shigella (SS) agars. Six strains plated on MAC and four strains plated on XLD gave colony counts 10% lower than TSA. With DCA and SS 15 and 16 strains, respectively, gave colony counts 50% lower than TSA. …

An Overview:Personal Property Management In Federal Research And Development Programs., Frank J. Ortiz Jr. Jul 1973

An Overview:Personal Property Management In Federal Research And Development Programs., Frank J. Ortiz Jr.

Public Administration ETDs

The contemporary notion of property management is going through a period of revolutionary change. This change represents massive rearrangements in the industrial, technological, Federal, and economic complex from which the concept of property management originated. The radically changing nature of personal property management in the Federal R&D environment involves a number of problem areas. One of the most pressing problems in this regard is the fact that many of those involved with property management in Federal R&D efforts are not aware of the revolutionary change their field is presently going through. In this work the problem will be put in …

A Comparison Of Recreation Leader Inventory Scores And Recreation Administrator Input In The Selection Of Recreation Leaders., John D. Rivera Jul 1973

A Comparison Of Recreation Leader Inventory Scores And Recreation Administrator Input In The Selection Of Recreation Leaders., John D. Rivera

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

A basic problem for many Recreation Administrators is hiring Recreation Leaders who will prove to be an asset to their programs. They must base their selection on the employee application form, an interview and personal judgment. A Recreation Administrator’s main concern in this respect is that he will hire a person who does not fit his own ideals and those of the Recreation Department. The person hired must be able to attain a rapport with the children he is dealing with, and at the same time, maintain the prescribed program. He must accomplish this task with a minimum of guidance. …

Involver And Facilitator Environments: A Concept Of Environment With Behavioral Implications, Richard Mcrae Jul 1973

Involver And Facilitator Environments: A Concept Of Environment With Behavioral Implications, Richard Mcrae

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis begins with the assumption that environment and human behavior are two interacting components of any milieu. It is suggested that the social sciences (particularly psychology and sociology) have researched many of the relationships between environment and behavior, but primarily from a behavioral or social perspective. This thesis suggests that environmental design requires concepts of environment which relate to behavior, rather than concepts of behavior which relate to environment.

The major purpose of this thesis has been to translate behavioral data into environmental concepts which can be used by designers as design tools. Following the methodology outlined by Glaser …

The Egyptian Question And The Triple Alliance, 1884-1904, Calvin Alexander Roberts Jun 1973

The Egyptian Question And The Triple Alliance, 1884-1904, Calvin Alexander Roberts

History ETDs

From 1884 to 1904 the Egyptian question arose in the diplomacy of every major European power, affecting their relations toward one another and being affected in turn by their diplomatic stances toward imperial rivalries and within the European power constellation. Egypt itself primarily embroiled Britain and France; but each of the great powers sought leverage through the international nature of Egyptian finances, the problem of the upper Nile, the Suez Canal, and the vestiges of Ottoman suzerainty. The larger Egyptian question, as manifested by these issues, vitally influenced the formation and continuation of European alignments and alliances. The Triple Alliance …

Intra- And Interspecific Aggression In House Finches And House Sparrows, Ronald L. Kalinoski

Biology ETDs

Aggression in House Finches and House Sparrows was studied at an outdoor feeder in winter and in indoor cages. In the wild, frequencies of encounters conformed to patterns of daily and seasonal feeding activity. House Sparrows of both sexes were dominant to House Finches, especially in cages. House Finches were more aggressive intra- than interspecifically. House Sparrows showed equal proportions of aggression toward finches and each other. House Finches maintained stable peck-right dominance hierarchies. House Sparrows exhibited extreme lability in dominance relationships, with no emergent structure. Interspecific aggression in these species was related to violations of individual distance at common …

Solar Energy For Tract Housing., Roy S. Brown May 1973

Solar Energy For Tract Housing., Roy S. Brown

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The United States, as well as other countries, is facing an energy crisis whose impact has already begun to be felt. The energy we use daily as utilities and take for granted in our homes has begun to run short. If present trends of production and consumption of energy continue, there will not be enough to power our homes by the end of this century.

The technology is already available to harness solar energy for individual (or multiple) dwellings for use as hot water, space heat, and air conditioning. Solar water heaters are available commercially on a small scale. Solar …

A Case Study For Rural Revitalization., Gerald Donald Percifield May 1973

A Case Study For Rural Revitalization., Gerald Donald Percifield

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Since the industrial revolution, there has been a steady outmigration from rural areas into the urban centers. The decrease of economic activity in rural America, caused by the mechanization of farming techniques, the increased size of farms and the centralization of manufacturing and industrial processes, has led to this continuous out-migration. Now, in the early seventies, we find that migration from rural to urban has overcrowded, polluted and congested these urban areas and left most of America vacant. This thesis attempts to show that a rural life-style is possible and that the problems that caused the migration from rural areas …

The present study was designed to determine (1) whether reward is more effective when based upon group rather than individual achievement, and (2) whether children of different ethnic backgrounds (Anglo vs. Mexican-American) respond differently to group and individual reinforcement contingencies.

Nine classes of fifth grade students from the Albuquerque public schools participated in a two-week study of the effects of individual reinforcement, group reinforcement, and group reinforcement plus individual recognition on academic and cooperative behavior. Each class participated in spelling, coding and science tasks as measures of academic behavior. Cooperative behavior was defined as the number of students working in …

From Teacher To Principal: The Rites Of Passage, Jerome J. Miller May 1973

From Teacher To Principal: The Rites Of Passage, Jerome J. Miller

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study dealt with the upward movement of aspirants from the role of teacher to the role of principal. The Hall's movement was viewed from the context of Van Gennep's "rites of passage" and sponsorship. Van Gennep conceptualized the movement from one role to another in three stages. These stages are: (1) separation, (2) transition, and (3) incorporation. Sponsorship is a mechanism for organizational control and serves as a mechanism to facilitate or hinder movement within the organization.

The findings of the study suggest that sponsors within the school system resemble the elders of the tribe. By right of their …

The Religious Polychromed Wood Sculpture Of Colonial Quito: Its Origins And Sources, Gabrielle G. Palmer

Art & Art History ETDs

The setting is Quito, Ecuador during the colonial period (1534 - 1809) when it was the capital of the geographical entity of the Audiencia of Quito, and part of the vast overseas Spanish colonial empire. The art of this period was almost exclusively at the service of the Catholic Church. One of its most important manifestations, both from a religious and an esthetic standpoint, was those cult images central to Catholic worship, carved of wood and realistically polychromed, which are still to be found in Quito's many colonial churches and convents. These images provide the subject of the following study, …

Effects Of Dictation And Transcription Instruction On Transcription Errors In Beginning Shorthand, Jean A. Berch May 1973

Effects Of Dictation And Transcription Instruction On Transcription Errors In Beginning Shorthand, Jean A. Berch

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Lloyd (1972) suggested the importance of simulating realistic business conditions in the classroom to strengthen vocabulary in specific content areas to aid students in the dictation-transcription process. In addition, Turse (1961) also emphasized the fact that students must be able to apply "word sense" when transcribing if they are to retain the correct meaning of the sentence when substituting words of similar meaning for missing shorthand outlines.

The purpose of this study was to determine if various types of instructional techniques given prior to dictation and transcription aid students in reducing their number of transcription errors. Subjects were assigned to …

Community Performing Arts Centres For Small Cities In New Mexico., Timothy C. Christensen May 1973

Community Performing Arts Centres For Small Cities In New Mexico., Timothy C. Christensen

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Often in the process of developing a performing arts centre, decisions are made that affect the physical form of the facility before an architect has been selected. The reasons for this vary. The client (or clients) may have definite ideas about the facility and feel that he does not need an architect's help in making a program. Sometimes, the client wants a facility just like the facility in a neighboring community and only needs the architect to make a copy. Often, community "experts" such as the high school drama teacher, or the president of the community concert association, are used …

Technology Assessment For Congress, Ronald Dean Hauber May 1973

Technology Assessment For Congress, Ronald Dean Hauber

Public Administration ETDs

On October 13, 1972 President Richard Nixon signed into law the Technology Assessment Act. That act established an Office of Technology Assessment to aid Congress in identifying and considering the effects of technological programs and proposals. The need for such an office grew out of Congress' recognition both of the critical impact of technology on the natural and social environment, and of the failure of Federal agencies and the traditional mechanisms of Congress to provide the legislative branch with the information necessary to make informed judgments on technological issues. The subject of technology assessment for Congress holds considerable interest for …

Special Education ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of three-dimensional stimuli versus two-dimensional stimuli in a serial positions task on the short-term memory of elementary school children with low intelligence. The specific hypothesis was that elementary school children with low intelligence would have greater short-term memory response accuracy on a serial positions task with three-dimensional objects than with two-dimensional objects. Fourteen fourth, fifth, and sixth graders whose IQ scores ranged from 60 to 85 were selected from regular classrooms in a middle income area in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Each subject was given the serial positions task with the …

Sacred-Secular Complementarity In Al Filo Del Agua And Pedro Paramo: An Inquiry Into Mythmaking, Floyd F. Merrell May 1973

Sacred-Secular Complementarity In Al Filo Del Agua And Pedro Paramo: An Inquiry Into Mythmaking, Floyd F. Merrell

Latin American Studies ETDs

Structuralism is the methodological approach employed in this study of two contemporary Mexican novels. The technique, including logico-mathematical relationships, schemata, and terminology, consists generally of an adaptation of Claude Lévi-Strauss' structural studies in anthropology and particularly in his interpretation of myth. The "deep-structure-surface-structure" dichotomization, a fundamental methodological premise we have adopted, is from Noam Chomsky by way of Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of linguistics. And the notion of "equilibrium," a dynamic interplay allowing for a genetic, developmental approach to structuralism, has been borrowed from the psychologist Jean Piaget.

Our initial objective was to formulate eclectically a method of structural analysis. …
