Violence Against Children In Nyarugusu Refugees Camp: Reporting And Perceptions Across Generations, Erin K. Fletcher, Seth R. Gitter, Savannah Wilhelm

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

There are over two million displaced children worldwide living in established refugee camps. Many of these children have escaped violent conflict in their country, but still are victims of violence within settlement camps. Little is known about the social norms around violence in these camps particularly in regards to reporting. We study this issue using a sample of over 300 child parent pairs in Nyarugusu camp in Tanzania. The camp consists of over 130,000 refugees mainly from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We find that parents have limited acceptance of physical violence and essentially no acceptance of sexual …

Telepain: Primary Care Chronic Pain Management Through Weekly Didactic And Case-Based Telementoring, Diane M. Flynn, Linda H. Eaton, Honor Mcquinn, Ashley Alden, Alexa R. Meins, Tessa Rue, David J. Tauben, Ardith Z. Doorenbos

Project ECHO Bibliography

Chronic pain is a significant problem among military personnel and a priority of the military health system. The U.S. Army Surgeon General's Pain Management Task Force recommends using telehealth capabilities to enhance pain management. This article describes the development and evaluation of a telehealth intervention (TelePain) designed to improve access to pain specialist consultation in the military health system. The study uses a wait-list controlled clinical trial to test: 1) effectiveness of the intervention, and 2) interviews to assess barriers and facilitators of the intervention implementation. The intervention involves a didactic presentation based on the Joint Pain Education Curriculum followed …

Leveraging Scarce Resources With Bone Health Teleecho To Improve The Care Of Osteoporosis, E Michael Lewiecki, Rachelle Rochelle, Matthew F. Bouchonville, David H. Chafey, Thomas P. Olenginski, Sanjeev Arora

Project ECHO Bibliography

Osteoporosis is a common condition with serious consequences because of fractures. Despite availability of treatments to reduce fracture risk, there is a large osteoporosis treatment gap that has reached crisis proportions. There are too few specialists to provide services for patients who need them. Bone Health Extension for Community Health Care Outcomes (TeleECHO) is a strategy using real-time ongoing videoconferencing technology to mentor health care professionals in rural and underserved communities to achieve an advanced level of knowledge for the care of patients with skeletal diseases. Over the first 21 months of weekly Bone Health TeleECHO programs, there were 263 …

Making The Most Of Cooperative Federalism: What The Clean Power Plan Has Already Achieved, Gabriel Pacyniak Dec 2017

Making The Most Of Cooperative Federalism: What The Clean Power Plan Has Already Achieved, Gabriel Pacyniak

Faculty Scholarship

The fate of the EPA's Clean Power Plan-the signature Obama Administration action to reduce greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions from existing power plants under the Clean Air Act-is uncertain at best given pending litigation and the opposition of President Donald Trump. Despite this uncertainty, the development of the Clean Power Plan provides an important case study of how rulemaking under a cooperative federalism statutory structure can prompt broad, beneficial policy engagement by states and stakeholders, even in a contentious regulatory action. In the development of the Clean Power Plan, active state and stakeholder engagement and an iterative process of "trying on" …

Diatom Community Response To An Acidic, Ambient Temperature, Geothermal Gradient, April Fox Dec 2017

Diatom Community Response To An Acidic, Ambient Temperature, Geothermal Gradient, April Fox

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Geothermally influenced surface waters are typically linked to high temperatures; however, they can also be associated with ambient temperature and have the distinct solute chemistry that identifies them as geothermal in origin. Few studies have been linked to diatom assemblages in ambient temperature, geothermally influenced waters. This study focused on the Sulphur Creek watershed in the Valles Caldera National Preserve, northern New Mexico. Seven representative sites were sampled monthly between May 2016-September 2016 for physicochemical parameters and diatom community composition. Ambient temperature waters with high conductivities, lower pH values (≤ 4.0), and increased Al+++, Fe++, SO4=, and SiO2 concentrations are …

Neutrosophic Hough Transform, Florentin Smarandache, Umit Budak, Yanhui Guo, Abdulkadir Sengur Dec 2017

Neutrosophic Hough Transform, Florentin Smarandache, Umit Budak, Yanhui Guo, Abdulkadir Sengur

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Hough transform (HT) is a useful tool for both pattern recognition and image processing communities. In the view of pattern recognition, it can extract unique features for description of various shapes, such as lines, circles, ellipses, and etc. In the view of image processing, a dozen of applications can be handled with HT, such as lane detection for autonomous cars, blood cell detection in microscope images, and so on. As HT is a straight forward shape detector in a given image, its shape detection ability is low in noisy images. To alleviate its weakness on noisy images and improve its …

Long Term Ecological Research Network

Since its founding in 1993 the International Long-term Ecological Research Network (ILTER) has gone through pronounced development phases. The current network comprises 44 active member LTER networks representing 700 LTER Sites and ~80 LTSER Platforms across all continents, active in the fields of ecosystem, critical zone and socio-ecological research. The critical challenges and most important achievements of the initial phase have now become state-of-the-art in networking for excellent science. At the same time increasing integration, accelerating technology, networking of resources and a strong pull for more socially relevant scientific information have been modifying the mission and goals of ILTER. This …
