Mainers Economic Outlook Improves But Most Expect Recession Within A Year 8/27/2024, Unh Survey Center

Mainers hold conflicting views about the U.S. economy, as only one-third expect businesses to experience bad times over the next twelve months, but two-thirds think a recession is likely in the next year or that the country is already in one. Nearly half of Maine residents feel worse off financially than they were a year ago and a majority report struggling at least somewhat to afford basic necessities. Republicans and Independents are far more likely than Democrats to report economic hardship and feel downbeat about their personal finances as well as their perceptions of the Maine and U.S. economies.

New Hampshire residents remain downbeat about their personal finances and nearly half of state residents report at least some difficulty affording basic necessities within the last year. However, Granite Staters are less pessimistic about their economic future. Compared to May, fewer people expect to be worse off financially next year or expect bad times for the state or national economies. Despite this, six in ten think the country is in a recession or is likely to enter one within the next year.

Vermonters Feeling Worse Off Economically With Large Partisan Divide 8/27/2024, Unh Survey Center

Few Vermonters feel better off financially than one year ago and four in ten state residents report having had at least some difficulty affording basic necessities. However, Vermont residents have a more mixed response about future economic conditions in the state and nation. Democrats are considerably more likely than Republicans to report doing better financially and to expect good times for the economy, while Republicans are much more likely to report hardship buying necessities and to anticipate a recession in the near future.

Nh Residents Remain Positive On Sununu's Performance As Governor 8/23/2024, Unh Survey Center

A majority approve of retiring incumbent Governor Chris Sununu's job performance. Four in ten residents, and more than two-thirds of Republicans, believe he has been above average or one of New Hampshire's best governors. Sununu's handling of COVID-19 and taxes are most often cited by his supporters as positive decisions while his handling of abortion and support for former President Donald Trump are most often mentioned as poor decisions by Sununu's detractors.

Senator Angus King leads in his re-election bid in Maine. Mainers are evenly divided on the state joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and prefer the current "congressional district" system to apportion presidential delegates rather than a "winner-take-all" system. Just over half of Mainers approve of Governor Mills' job performance and nearly half think the state is headed in the right direction.

Maggie Goodlander and Colin Van Ostern are neck-and-neck in the race for the Democratic nomination in the Second Congressional District. Republican candidates in both 1st and 2nd congressional districts are largely unknown.

Incumbent Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Becca Balint are both far ahead of their opponents in their races for re-election.
