The Influence Of A Transformative Elementary Science Curriculum On At-Risk Students: A Case Report, M. Katheryn Grimes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the influence of a transformative elementary science curriculum on at-risk students. Project S.M.I.L.E., the focus of this study, uses strategies for curriculum development proposed by theorists of the post-modern era within the framework of social constructivism. The Metabolic Rate Of Xenopus Laevis: Interactional Influences Of Development And Short Term Hypoxia, Dulynn Hastings Jan 1993

The Metabolic Rate Of Xenopus Laevis: Interactional Influences Of Development And Short Term Hypoxia, Dulynn Hastings

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Amphibians undergo pronounced physiological and morphological adjustments during metamorphosis, due in large part to the change from water breathing to predominantly air breathing. A developmental change in the ability of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems to transport oxygen or a change in tissue demand for oxygen may be reflected in the aerobic metabolic rate (MO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}). This study focuses on how MO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} of the South African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) is affected by short term hypoxia during development. MO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} of animals from Nieuwkoop and Faber stages 1-66, 1 month post-metamorphic froglets, and adult frogs were measured under conditions of normoxia and …

Familial Influences Of Anxiety In Youngsters, Diane Wadiak Backus Jan 1993

Familial Influences Of Anxiety In Youngsters, Diane Wadiak Backus

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study sought to determine the degree to which various family factors correlate with child anxiety. Fifty-nine subjects, aged 12 through 18, completed the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale. Parents of these children completed the Family Environment Scale, the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Adults. Results indicated that maternal level of anxiety was the only familial factor that was significantly correlated with child anxiety. There was a non-significant but noteworthy negative correlation between child anxiety and the "independence" subscale of the Family Environment Scale. Based on these findings, recommendations for prevention, assessment, and treatment are …

This ethnographic study explored the interactions among and between students and teachers, instructional strategies and academic shifts, and the influence of those instructional strategies and academic shifts on teachers' constructs defined through a multi-age context. This eight month study was conducted in an elementary school organized under the governance structure of Accelerated Schools with all classes grouped in multi-age configurations; Participants selected were primary and intermediate teachers and students within the elementary school who had been at that site for one to three years. Participating teachers were both experienced and novice ranging from two to twenty years of experience. This …
