Predictors Of Resilience And Their Influence On Adaptation After Elective Abortion, Anna Marie Antonio

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The literature has inconsistent findings on the impact of an induced abortion on a woman's physical and psychological well-being. The purposes of this survey research design using correlation and multiple regression analyses were to determine the relationship between protective factors, risk factors, resilience, and outcomes (positive or negative). Additionally, this study investigated whether resilience, protective factors, and risk factors could be predictive of positive or negative outcomes following induced abortion. A convenience sample of 216 women was recruited nationally from hospitals, clinics, and various organizations. Inclusion criteria included women, 18 years of age or older, living in the United States, …

Education Interest Groups: The Influence Of Networks On Rulemaking And Policy In Public School Reform, Brian Curtis Myli

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A problem for educators and scholars is that there is little understanding of how the agendas of particular interest groups reflect the intent of federal agencies or lawmakers as education policies take shape during the rulemaking process. As a result, it is difficult to determine whether federal education policy is influenced by outside interest groups. The purpose of this study was to provide an understanding of the influence of interest groups during the informal stage of federal rulemaking in education policy. The research questions being examined include: 1) In what ways do different influence the rulemaking process in the development …

The Influence Of Collective Efficacy On Reporting Crime Among College Students, Violet Angelina Colavito Jan 2007

The Influence Of Collective Efficacy On Reporting Crime Among College Students, Violet Angelina Colavito

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Colleges and universities often aim to create a sense of community and a neighborhood feel for students. University campuses are designed in ways that reflect the factors of social cohesion measured by Goudriaan, Wittebrood, and Nieuwbeerta (2006). Crime on college campuses is an important social issue. Data from the NCVS suggest that between 1995 and 2002, college students experienced an estimated 400,000 to 530,000 violent crimes each year; yet only about 35% of violent victimizations against college students were reported to the police (Baum 2005, and Hart 2003). Yet, research exploring the effect of social cohesion and collective efficacy on …

The Pluto Debate: Influence Of Emotions On Belief, Attitude, And Knowledge Change, Suzanne H Broughton Jan 2007

The Pluto Debate: Influence Of Emotions On Belief, Attitude, And Knowledge Change, Suzanne H Broughton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In line with the "warming trend" (Sinatra, 2005), this study examined the influence of emotions during controversial conceptual change. Issues in science may trigger highly emotional responses (e.g., evolutionary theory). However, it is unclear whether these emotions facilitate or inhibit change; I investigated the nature of emotions engendered when learning about a controversial science topic, Pluto's reclassification, including the valence (positive/negative) and activation (activating/deactivating) of emotions (Pekrun et al., 2002). I also investigated whether belief, attitude, and/or conceptual change could be facilitated through rereading a refutation text and/or rereading during small group discussions. Refutation texts directly state a common misconception, …

The Influence Of Instruction Set And Test Format On The Detection Of Malingering, Teri Jean Forrest

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It is increasingly common for individuals involved in civil litigation to undergo neuropsychological evaluation. This trend increases the possibility that individuals receive trade-secret test information from their attorneys before evaluation in order to maximize their ability to appear injured. However, no known research has examined what effect this knowledge may have on an individual's ability to successfully evade detection as a malingerer. The current investigation examined the performance of archival brain-damaged individuals, normal controls, and individuals in three malingering groups on both previously and newly developed malingering indices for the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and the Halstead Category Test …

The Influence Of Self-Efficacy And Working Memory Capacity On Problem Solving Efficiency, Bobby H Hoffman Jan 2005

The Influence Of Self-Efficacy And Working Memory Capacity On Problem Solving Efficiency, Bobby H Hoffman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study investigated the influence of self-efficacy beliefs, working memory capacity and problem complexity on problem solving performance, response time, and problem solving efficiency. Previous research investigated these factors from an absolute performance perspective, but not from the perspective of efficiency, defined as the ratio of problem-solving accuracy over time; Students completed an operational span working memory task, rated their self-efficacy for solving multiplication problems without the use of paper or calculation aids, and then solved computer-based cognitive multiplication problems, under conditions of varying complexity. Two competing hypotheses were proposed, which state that the efficiency of problem solving is either …

Supermarket Tabloid Influence On Mainstream Daily Newspaper Editorial Content, William Glenn Cook Jan 1998

Supermarket Tabloid Influence On Mainstream Daily Newspaper Editorial Content, William Glenn Cook

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Daily newspapers' content is influenced by the tabloid press in two ways. First, the dailies serve as a watchdog by criticizing tabloids' sensational news, covering litigation against tabloids, and allowing the subjects of tabloid reports to rebut or criticize allegations tabloids make against them. Second, the dailies occasionally follow up on or repeat stories first reported by tabloids. This study compared the content of three weekly supermarket tabloids--the National Enquirer, Globe, and Star--against the content of six daily newspapers--the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas Sun, Reno Gazette-Journal, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and USA Today--over a 26-week period. The …
