This Great Fraternity: Nebraska's Grand Army Of The Republic, 1867-1920, Richard Evans Keyes Aug 1997

This Great Fraternity: Nebraska's Grand Army Of The Republic, 1867-1920, Richard Evans Keyes

Student Work

America’s Civil War transformed the political, economic and social landscape of the nation. Nowhere did this transformation manifest itself so clearly as in the lives of the men who flocked to the Union colors. The world of combat created a landscape of death, dismemberment and disease, while destroying Victorian concepts of knightliness and romance. Veterans spent a lifetime in successfully reintegrating themselves into the nation’s mainstream, while constantly harkening back to the discipline and organizational skills learned in the war. Their efforts came to fruition with the establishment of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1866, which became the …

If Even A Few Are Reclaimed, The Labor Is Not Lost: William Hamilton's Life Among The Iowa And Omaha Indians, 1837-1891, Michelle Cauleen Gullett

Student Work

This is a biography of Reverend William Hamilton, Presbyterian missionary to the American Indians for over fifty years. Bom in Clinton, Pennsylvania, son of a farmer, Hamilton developed an interest in the ministry at an early age. Following graduation from Washington College in Washington, Pennsylvania, and his ordination by the Presbytery of Northumberland, he offered his services to the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions. As a result, the Board sent Hamilton and his new wife to live and work among the Ioway Indians in the trans-Missouri West. Hamilton labored among the Ioway, Sac and Fox Indians with fellow missionary Samuel …

The Breton Case For Regional Autonomy: Centuries Of Struggle In Brittany, France, Annie Loring Peters Apr 1986

The Breton Case For Regional Autonomy: Centuries Of Struggle In Brittany, France, Annie Loring Peters

Student Work

My first encounter with Brittany, France, came in 1973 when I was bicycling through the Breton countryside with a group of Concordia College students. I befriended a Breton activist named Sylvain Phlipponneau, then twenty-one years of age, who made what I found to be an intriguing parallel between the plight of the American Indian and that of the outlying regions of France. He criticized the French government as over-bearing, excessively centralized, and with what he called a reckless disregard for the cultural integrity of the provinces. I was then seventeen, anxious to experience some of the residual youthful activism of …

The Trail Of Education In Two Cities: Omaha And Manila, Navidad T. Nacianceno, Floyd T. Waterman Dec 1985

The Trail Of Education In Two Cities: Omaha And Manila, Navidad T. Nacianceno, Floyd T. Waterman

Publications

Never, perhaps, in the history of local communities has the educational system been recognized openly as being interwoven with the community as it is now. In individuals' aspiration, for better lives and as a primary component of the equation of education and community, education is viewed as an avenue of promise. There can be no doubt of its universal acceptance as the key to the most fervently desired goals, security for the future and an understanding of self and others.

A Review Of Explicit And Implicit Propositions About Women As Terrorists, Ineke Haan Marshall, Vincent J. Webb, Dennis Hoffman Nov 1984

A Review Of Explicit And Implicit Propositions About Women As Terrorists, Ineke Haan Marshall, Vincent J. Webb, Dennis Hoffman

Publications

The purpose of this paper on women as terrorists is threefold. The first aim is to examine a portion of the existing literature in order to identify explicit and implicit propositions and hypotheses about the causal dynamics involved in female terrorism. The second is to make a critical examination of these propositions and hypotheses and to categorize the nature of prevailing explanations of women as terrorists. Finally, the policy implications of the various approaches to explaining female involvement in terrorist activities are examined.

The Curragh Incident, March, 1914, Causes And Effects, Edward R. Cummins Aug 1974

The Curragh Incident, March, 1914, Causes And Effects, Edward R. Cummins

Student Work

The exchange of the preceeding communications set off a politico-military crisis that has become known to students of British history as the "Curragh Incident." In a very limited sense, the Curragh Incident--the refusal of a group of cavalry officers stationed in Ireland to accept orders from the War Office--began and ended during one tension-filled week in March, 1914. In a larger sense, the causes of the incident were rooted in the controversy over Home Rule for Ireland going back to the 1880's and its effects carried on well into the period of World War I. The purpose of this paper …

Russell And The Revolutionaries: A Study Of Anglo-Irish Relations, 1842-1852, Barry B. Combs Jun 1970

Russell And The Revolutionaries: A Study Of Anglo-Irish Relations, 1842-1852, Barry B. Combs

Student Work

Perhaps no time in the history of Anglo-Irish relations has brought more criticism on a British administration than the period of the great of 1846-50. The man most responsible for British policy during those years, Lord John Russell, has been accused of having only a superficial interest in the well-being of millions of Irish people, and it had been said that his actions were motivated primarily by political considerations. At the same time, the period is marked by an apparent complete failure of Irish leadership, beginning with the declining influence of Danel O'Connell and the Repeal Association after 1843, and …

The Maynooth Grant And The Conservative Party, R S. Mcgregor Aug 1968

The Maynooth Grant And The Conservative Party, R S. Mcgregor

Student Work

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of the Maynooth Bill upon the Conservative party and the careeer of Sir Robert Pool. Because of the limitations of time and space and in the interest of a concise narrative, a great deal of Peel's Irish program has either not been mentioned or only dealt with in passing: the Devon Commission, the Irish Colleges Bill, and the Charitable Bequests Act are the most notable of these omissions or glosses.

The Development Of Missouri Valley, Iowa To 1931, John W. Gard Aug 1968

The Development Of Missouri Valley, Iowa To 1931, John W. Gard

Student Work

Before the late 1840's, no white men had settled the area of southwestern Iowa at the point where Harrison Country is now located. Moreover, only a few white men had cast eye upon its valleys, inhabited only by Indians and wild animals. Probably the first explorers to set foot in the area were Lewis and Clark, who, in 1804, ordered their men to pitch camp just below the mouth of the Soldier River in what is now Harrison County. Reports of rich fur resources soon brought a number of trappers and hunters who undoubtedly followed the streams of the area …

General George Crook And The Sioux War Of 1876, Forrest Delmont Newman Jan 1967

General George Crook And The Sioux War Of 1876, Forrest Delmont Newman

Student Work

A voluminous bibliography of excellent materials devoted to the Sioux War of 1876 attests to the fascination this subject holds for amateur and professional historians. One basis of interest may be a morbid preoccupation in the shocking violence that was manifested as standard practice by the red man--and somtimes by his white adversary. A more humane motivation may be found in the sympathy which many students express on behalf of the underdog, the Indian. Other researchers associate themselves, in their imagination, with the hardy folk who forged a civilization in the savage West.

The Backgrounds And Organization Of The Great Oregon Migration Of 1843, Michael B. Husband Mar 1966

The Backgrounds And Organization Of The Great Oregon Migration Of 1843, Michael B. Husband

Student Work

To define the motives for any human migration is often a formidable, but nevertheless an inspiring an challenging undertaking. This study, therefore, is devoted to a detailed examination of the events which led to the highly significant migration from the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys to the Oregon country in 1843. I shall demonstrate that this, the first home-building immigration to the Pacific Northwest, was not a mere response to leadership, but was stimulated by a deep-seated frontier force based upon the desire of the inhabitants of the western states to better their lot. It was no aimless wandering upon which …

A History Of The Episcopal Church In Omaha From 1856 To 1964, James M. Robbins Jr Jan 1965

A History Of The Episcopal Church In Omaha From 1856 To 1964, James M. Robbins Jr

Student Work

There are three reasons for writing a history of the Episcopal Church in Omaha with an emphasis on the foundation years. This period covers the years 1856 to 1960. First, there is a desire for a complete understanding of the history of Omaha and the various institutions that helped to make the city. Second, there is a request to have a greater understanding of the development and growth of the State of Nebraska. And thirdly, there never has been a history of the activities of the Episcopal Church in Omaha.

The Anti-Greek Riot Of 1909: South Omaha, John G. Bitzes Aug 1964

The Anti-Greek Riot Of 1909: South Omaha, John G. Bitzes

Student Work

The anti-Greek riot of 1909, in South Omaha, Nebraska, was a violent, regrettable, but significant episode in American history. Its importance rests in the fact that it took place at a time when the American people were in the process of making a very important decision concerning immigration. By 1908, the problem of the oriental immigrant entering and living on the west coast of the United States had been solved largely by adopting a policy of exclusion. There still remained, however, the great wave of the "new immigration" from southern and eastern Europe. The American native, largely of northwestern European …

Omaha Press Reaction To The Versailles Verdict: A Study Using Three Omaha Newspapers January, 1919-March, 1920, Beverly Geffert Jan 1963

Omaha Press Reaction To The Versailles Verdict: A Study Using Three Omaha Newspapers January, 1919-March, 1920, Beverly Geffert

Student Work

Representatives of twenty-seven nations worked at Versailles in 1919 under the gaze of a critical public much more alert than when the Congress of Vienna had assembled one hundred years before. In contrast to the atmosphere at Vienna, where the press had been completely suppressed because it was considered... the most powerful means used by the pretended supports of the rights of nations, to the detriment of those princes,... the public was kept informed regarding the happenings at Versailles. One hundred fifty newspaper correspondents from the United States attended the Conference out of a total of some five hundred writers. …
