A Survey Of Economic Forecasting Techniques, Eugene Michael Boyd Aug 1977

A Survey Of Economic Forecasting Techniques, Eugene Michael Boyd

Student Work

Decision making involves analysis of relevant factors in order to determine a course of action. Since the action to he taken carries into the future, a decision must take into consideration the future status of and effects of any changes in these relevant factors. If these factors are likely to change in the future, the effect of any change must be considered now, before the decision is made. The problem is that it is difficult to foresee these changes. Because the future cannot be known perfectly, and because the correctness of a decision depends on the future status of relevant …

A Disquieting Case: Ethel And Julius Rosenberg, Inez M. Whitehead

Student Work

Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were arrested at a time when the domestic political scene of the United States was reflecting on and reacting to international tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. Post-war losses to Communism abroad gave politicians within the United States the opportunity to challenge and condemn Democratic leadership of the country. The struggle waged against Communism abroad and at home created an atmosphere of suspicion, fear, and intolerance which would be the background for Cold War subversion and espionage cases.

Wisc, Wisc-R Differences: Fact Or Artifact, Steven Sherrets

Student Work

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) was developed by David Wechsler in 1949 as a downward extension of the adult intelligence test called the Wechsler-Bellevue (Wechsler, 1939). The content for the WISC came largely from the Wechsler-Bellevue Form II although there were some new items added at the easier end to provide a floor for the younger child (Edwards, 1972). As the WISC Manual (Wechsler, 1949) points out, the test was intended for children from ages five through 15 and was standardized separately from the Wechsler-Bellevue Form II.

Effects Of Mowing And Burning On Small Mammal Populations Of A Restored Prairie., Francis A. Tworek

Student Work

Immediate and short-term effects of mowing and burning management on populations of small mammals inhabiting a reestablished grassland were evaluated. Mowed, burned, and unburned, unmowed areas were separately live-trapped during 1975 and 1976. Ten species were observed but only four were in sufficient numbers to be used for population estimations; these were Peromyscus maniculatus, Microtus ochrogaster, Perognathus flavescens, and Reithrodontoyms megalotis. Direct mortality was only observed as a consequence of buring; young Reithrodontoyms megalotis in surface nets were particularly susceptible. Immediately after both burning and mowing management R. megalotis and M. ochrogaster populations declined significantly. Pergnathus flavescens populations were not …

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Location Decision Making in Three Suburban Omaha Office Clusters," by Armin K. Ludwig.

Consumers of suburban office space are faced with location decisions which do not challenge consumers of Central Business District (CBD) office space. By definition there is only one CBD with its relatively fixed site characteristics and relatively fixed transportation linkages to other parts of a metropolitan region. Those consumers who choose not to locate in the CBD are confronted with a myriad of site characteristics and a wide variety of transportation linkages not only to the CBD but …

A large proportion of the people of the United States depend upon the automobile for the greater share of their transportation. Many of their activities are structured so that they must depend upon the flexibility which auto‐mobile transportation provides. Commuting five to forty or more miles to work is common. Shopping seems to be done at scattered locations and frequent intervals in urban areas. Over the past half century the automobile has created great changes in dating and courtship patterns. There have developed drive-in theaters, fast-food restaurants, and motels as a consequence of the automobile. Many of the activities of …

This tornado traveled in a northeasterly direction through residential, commercial, and industrial areas of the city. It left a path of destruction nine miles long and 600 yards wide, covering 2,000 blocks of the city. Both the death and injury tolls from the disaster were amazingly low. Three persons were killed and one-hundred and fifty-seven people were treated for injuries in hospitals.

A Comparison Of Three Training Programs In Developing Cardiovascular Fitness In Untrained Women, Carol S. Hovey

Student Work

Interval training is defined by Fox and Mathews (1974) as a series of repeated bouts of exercise alternated with periods of rest or relief. Much research has been done comparing different intensities, durations, and work-relief ratios in interval training, and how these affect the development. of the various physiological systems of the body. Little, however, has been done to compare the development of aerobic power with the duration and intensity of the work interval varied, with frequency per week held constant. Research in this area has been especially limited using untrained women as subjects. Rosentswieg and Burrhus (1975) point out …

A City Index: Measurement Of A City's Attractiveness, Ralph H. Todd

Publications

The most commonly recognized factors that attract industrial investment to a city are those with impact upon sales and profit. Size of market; availability and price of labor, materials and service; and proximity to supportive industry all weigh heavily. In addition, location decision makers must consider the conditions that relate to living in the new area: a city's overall economic condition, its demographic and physical environment, the seriousness of its crime problems, and its recreational and educational opportunities. Similarly, the decision may reflect acceptance of the premise that such conditions as a city's geographic location, its population size or growth …

Party registration was the factor most associated with the mayoral vote, according to an analysis of survey data collected by CAUR in the five days preceding the May 10, 1977 election.1 Although the pattern of votes in the non-partisan mayoral election was also associated with sex, geographical area, and age, the relationship was strongest for party registration. Betty Abbott (a registered Republican) was favored by 58 percent of the registered Republicans willing to disclose their choices, and AI Veys …

Gender Constancy In 3 To 6 Year Old Children: A Methodological Analysis, Rhoda Andrews May 1977

Gender Constancy In 3 To 6 Year Old Children: A Methodological Analysis, Rhoda Andrews

Student Work

Previous research on gender constancy with 3- to 6-year old children has produced conflicting findings regarding the age at which children are gender constant. Slaby and Frey (1075), and Thompson and Bentler (1973) indicate the presence of gender constancy at age 4, while DeVries (1969) has found that gender constancy is not present until age 6. The aim of this study was to compare the three gender constancy measures using the same population of children. The subjects were 63 white, middle-class 3- to 6-year old children whose IQ's were 100 or greater. The data analyses generally supported' previous findings for …

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Samuel Adams On The Boston Massacre, Virginia Pegues-Sailsbury May 1977

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Samuel Adams On The Boston Massacre, Virginia Pegues-Sailsbury

Student Work

Samuel Adams, labeled the "father of the American Revolution" by William Wells, may have been neglected in the history books of America. "There is no doubt that without him the prerevolutionary protests of Massachusetts would have been muted considerably." Yet even to this day Smuel Adams is not given an important place in history. It is interesting that in 1777, before the Battle of Bunker Hill, General Gage, commander of the British groops, was authised by the king to pardon all patriots who would serve the kings, except samuel adams and John Fancock.

The Czech Immigrant - A Process Of Acculturation: Schuyler, Nebraska, 1870-1920, Janet Varejcka

Student Work

Oscar Handlin wrote, "Once I thought to write a history of the immigrants in America. Then I discovered that the immigrants were American history." Yet, how strange that so many people are reluctant to be referred to as Irish, Polish, German, or Swedish. Their wish is to be called an American. The heritage their parents or grandparents left behind has often been ignored. I did not fully understand the traditions of my Czechoslovak heritage even though I grew up with a foreign language and hints of a different culture. In a time of resurgent interest in the ethnic dimensions of …

Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Camping: A Spatial Analysis, Dennis E. Bussom May 1977

Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Camping: A Spatial Analysis, Dennis E. Bussom

Student Work

As our society becomes increasingly leisure-oriented with the growth of disposable personal income and shorter work periods, the need for recreation facilities continues to rise. Government agencies have attempted to meet this demand by the expansion of public facilities within the total outdoor rcreation resource complex. Similarly, commerical entrepreneurs have recognized the profit potential fo specific recreation elements with a resulting increase in facilities such as commerical campgrounds. Because of the difficulties in obtaining data, economic demand and supply studies have been limited mostly to the public sector. An early study stated that variables affecting public and commerical recreation facilities …

Women Over Thirty Involved In Life Planning: Society's Cultured Pearl, Sue Akers Cameron

Student Work

The pressing expectations of society and self brought five women (all educated--some formally, some informally), 30 years of age and over, together, to explore and journey through the literature; look at career development; probe into the feelings and attitudes about themselves; determine who they were at the moment and where they chose to take their futures. Renewal was the key.

Results Of A Pre-Kindergarten Screening In The Papillion-La Vista School District, Susan Folkerts

Student Work

A child's language development is inextricably linked to his capabilities in other areas. A multitude of factors influence the child's ability to develop and use language. Auditory skills are the most obvious and the most important skills necessary for language comprehension. Auditory acuity, or rather, the lack of it, is probably the single most important determiner of whether a child will spontaneously develop language. Children who are deaf never hear spoken language, and have difficulty comprehending the subtleties of it, (Myklebust, 1964; Schmitt, 1969).

A Study Of The Growth In English Proficiency Of Omaha Public High School Students Enrolled In Traditional And Non-Traditional Programs, Lillian Planteen

Student Work

Since the fall of 1970, an elective English program has been available for senior high students in the Omaha Public Schools. Although all senior high schools have sampled the program called Special-Interest English, only four of the eight high schools have adopted it in total. Since its inception, the program has become increasingly sophisticated developing somewhat differently in each school. Technical High School, which adopted the elective program, has now expanded it into an individualized program so unique and complex that that school will not be included in this study.

Legal Attitudes As Precursors Of Moral Development: A Developmental Study Of Perceptual Judgments About Criminal Severity., Susan Cohn Brustein May 1977

Legal Attitudes As Precursors Of Moral Development: A Developmental Study Of Perceptual Judgments About Criminal Severity., Susan Cohn Brustein

Student Work

A popular trend in American education is the process approach of teaching (Scott 1972). The proponents of this pedagogical,- style view factual learning as having little import in a society which changes radically over very short periods of time and further espouse that textbook learning merely perpetuates a built in obsolescence in our educational system. They have expressed the concern that children be given tools (behavioral strategies) which are relevant, not only in solving the daily problems they confront, but which they can later integrate to solve unforseen future crises. Van Til (1974) has insisted that curriculum be related to …
