Differential Effects Of Praise Types, Ronald M. Kennedy Dec 1977

Differential Effects Of Praise Types, Ronald M. Kennedy

Student Work

Sixty-two male Caucasian undergraduate Psychology students were randomly divided into four treatment groups wherein they all performed an identical task under the direction of a "supervisor." The supervisor dispensed either non-evaluative verbal feedback, Structured Praise, Considerate Praise, or a combination of Structured and Considerate Praise to subjects in treatment conditions one through four respectively. Considerate praise is characterized as aperiodic, unlinked (to the giving of a formal performance appraisal), informal (not required by the "system"), spontaneous, generally unwritten, "from the heart" type praise while structured praise is essentially just the opposite.

The dependent variables of task quantity, task quality, task …

Developmental Changes In Cognition: An Evaluation Of A Philosophy For Children Program, Leendert Baggerman Dec 1977

Developmental Changes In Cognition: An Evaluation Of A Philosophy For Children Program, Leendert Baggerman

Student Work

The formal operational stage seems to differ considerably from earlier Piagetian stages. The first three Piagetian cognitive stages seem to develop fully in all individuals, unless there is a major cultural difference or a major psychopathology (Bruner, 1966). In contrast, there is disagreement in the literature as to whether formal operational reasoning fully develops in all normal individuals. Both Dulit (1972) and Tomlinson-Keasey (1972) found evidence that some normal individuals never attain formal operational reasoning. Others however (Jackson, 1965; Lovell, 1961) agree with Piaget (Inhelder and Piaget, 1958) that the emergence of formal operational reasoning occurs invariably between 11 and …

Development Of A Small Area Population And Housing Estimating Systems For The City Of Omaha, Stephen Warren Kinzy Dec 1977

Development Of A Small Area Population And Housing Estimating Systems For The City Of Omaha, Stephen Warren Kinzy

Student Work

The need, for population housing information describing the conditions of our urban areas has become critical for city and county governments in their attempts to deal with such problems as urban growth, inner city decay and redevelopment, location of public facilities, and allocation of city services. No longer can the decennial census inventories be used as the only source of urban information. City and county governments must develop methods of estimating population and housing characteristics between census enumerations that can provide accurate, timely and meaningful information concerning the urban community. This information must then be made available to local decision …

Juvenile Delinquency As A Form Of Deviant Behavior: The Study Of Social Class Attitudes Toward Delinquents, Donald E. Mbosowo

Student Work

Any member of any social group learns the proper ways of behaving in his group. He is informed of what might be the consequences and penalties if he violates group rules. The guidelines and rules of a group, for its members, are referred to as the concept of "group norm." Norms are found in all social groups. Sociology, as a discipline, deals with both the notion of adherence to group norms and the notion of departure from group norms. Some departures from norms are termed "delinquency." Sociologists and others have defined and explained delinquency to be any behavior of young …

Paul Green's "Louisiana Cavalier", David Birge

Student Work

In 1936 a new genre of theater, symphonic drama, was established with the opening of Paul Green’s The Lost Colony. Green was able to create his genre by combining certain elements of the place from historical eras and placing them in a contemporary setting. Like the religious plays of the Middle Ages and the passion plays of then and now, the local community was to be involved in almost every level of production; like the pageant or the masque, singing, dancing, and scenic spectacle were to be integral to its production; like the Greek theater the play was to be …

Physiological And Mutagenic Responses In Arabidopsis Thaliana (L.) Heynh To Aldrin, Lindane And Perthane., Susan B. Koba

Student Work

Introduction: Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh., a small member of the Cruciferae, is ideally suited as an experimental plant in mutation research for some of the following reasons: 1. It is a highly self-fertilizing species, which leads to the maintenance of extremely homozygous genetic lines. Outcrossing in the lab is in the range of 0.01%, while in nature it is no greater than 2% (Redei 1975). Thus, there is no confusion between new characteristics due to mutation and those due to outbreeding. 2. Spontaneous mutation rates are relatively low (Redei 1970), again making induced mutations more observable. 3. Its small size …

The Structure Of Employment In The Omaha Smsa: Estimates And Projections By Industry And Occupation, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar), Edward W. Hauswald

Publications

The structure of employment by industry and occupation in the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) 1 has been changing. Trends in various industries and occupations in the Omaha SMSA do not, however, differ ·significantly from national trends. Agricultural employment is increasing in absolute numbers, but represents a declining proportion of the Omaha SMSA labor force, as is true for the nation. Similarly, employment in the manufacturing sector has become less and less important as a proportion of all employment. State and local government and retail trade employers have all had continued long term upward increases in employees, both in …

In order to have a more specific understanding of local developments, additional information as to recent past and current occupational developments is desirable. An attempt to obtain such information was made by means of a survey of employers in the Omaha SMSA in August-September, 1977. The specific objectives …

Student Work

The effectiveness of three differential reinforcement techniques, extinction of the old response with reinforcement for the new response versus extinction of the old response with double reinforcement for the new response versus continuation of reinforcement for the old response with double reinforcement for the new response, in reducing lever-pressing behavior, was studied, as a function of past reinforcement history and present schedule of reinforcement. Thirty children, with a mean age of 5 years 10 months, were reinforced for tapping the assigned key on either a differential reinforcement of low rates (drl 10"') or a differential reinforcement of high rates (VR …

The Relationship Of Verbal Abilities To Cognitive Complexity, Margaret R. Mullins

Student Work

A view of the person as an individual striving to anticipate, understand, and control his environment was put forth by Kelly (1955) in his Psychology of Personal Constructs, Kelly states that the person looks at the world through "patterns or templates which he creates and then attempts to fit over the realities of which the world is composed" (p. 9). These templates or patterns are termed constructs, and result from the person’s ability to distinguish differences and similarities in the world about him and generalize them to other instances. Constructs are used to predict events and to assess the validity …
