State Agency Response To Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator Oversight, Thomas G. Barnes
State Agency Response To Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator Oversight, Thomas G. Barnes
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)
An 18-question survey was sent to all state wildlife agency directors in an attempt to evaluate state wildlife agencies' response to administrative oversight of nuisance wildlife control operators (NWCO). Forty-four (88 %) of the state wildlife agencies responded to the survey. Almost every state agency responding believes they should promote the growth and privatization of the NWCO industry. They also believe that their agency should provide administrative oversight. There were discrepancies in what agency personnel believe constitute oversight versus what policies are actually implemented. Although most agencies believe NWCO should be licensed, only 56% of states actually require licensing. Most …

Ec95-817 Nebraska Agricultural Producers Preferences For National Agriculture, And Food Policy After 1995, A.L. (Roy) Frederick, Glenn A. Helmers, Steven L. Elmore
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Farmers' preferences are important in the development of farm bills. In that spirit, the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska Agricultural Statistics Service recently asked a random sample of agricultural producers about their preferences for the 1995 farm bill. Similar surveys were undertaken in 1984 and 1989, prior to the last two farm bills. Each Nebraska survey was part of a larger, national effort. This year, 15 states, scattered across all regions of the United States, participated.
The purpose of this report is to summarize Nebraska producers' views on key issues likely to be …
Nf95-218 Conjunctive Use Policy Options, William Miller
Nf95-218 Conjunctive Use Policy Options, William Miller
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Background
The hydrologic cycle controls water available for use. Rainfall, evaporation, runoff, percolation, and transpiration combine to influence the water available at a specific location at a particular point in time. The speed at which water moves among stages in the hydrologic cycle and the amount of time it spends in storage at any stage affects water availability to users. The conjunctive use issue refers to the portion of the hydrologic cycle where groundwater and surface water interface and influence each other.
Users who couldn't depend on an irregular flow of water over time developed systems that modify the variable …
Status And Management Of Vole Damage To Horticultural Plantings In North Carolina, Peter T. Bromley, William T. Sullivan Jr.
Status And Management Of Vole Damage To Horticultural Plantings In North Carolina, Peter T. Bromley, William T. Sullivan Jr.
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 6th (1993)
A trapping study in 1979 indicated that voles (Microtus pinetorum and M. pinetorum) were distributed widely in North Carolina. In 1991, Extension Agents with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service were surveyed to determine the distribution, nature and severity of vole damage to horticultural plantings, home orchards, and other plantings. Data from the statewide trapping survey and the poll of agents coincided to indicate that voles, particularly pine voles, caused damage from the mountains to the coast. Existing, legal control methods were judged grossly inadequate by agents. Pursuant to the surveys, the North Carolina Pesticide Board and the North Carolina …
The Enigma Of Drought: Management And Policy Issues For The 1990s, Donald A. Wilhite
The Enigma Of Drought: Management And Policy Issues For The 1990s, Donald A. Wilhite
Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Drought affects more people than any other hazard, in both developed and developing countries, yet few governments have taken steps to prepare for it. This situation stems partly from the complex nature of drought, which affects various sectors of society in different ways, and partly from an inability or unwillingness of governments to accept drought as a normal part of climate, not as an extreme random event. Scientific and policy communities have become increasingly concerned about the inability of governments to respond to drought in an effective and timely manner, and some have called for improved drought planning and management. …
