Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study was conducted to determine the level of child labor involvement in arable crop farming. A multistage random sampling method was used to select the respondents. Data were collected with the use of a structured interview schedule and questionnaire. Most farming household heads were males (60.61%) and 65% had no formal education, with an average age of 42.28 years, an average household size of 11 persons, annual average income of N192,000.00, and average farm size of 1.13ha. The children participated in field preparation, planting, weeding, pesticide, fertilizer and herbicide application, harvesting, transportation, and processing. Many (43.33%) of the children …

Rural Caregivers And Social Isolation: Some Properties And Dimensions, Ramon Hinojosa, Melanie Sberna Hinojosa, Toni Chiara
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
There are an estimated 400,000 people with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the United States. Many rely on an informal caregiver for assistance. Caregivers are more likely than non-caregivers to report feelings of social isolation. Rural MS caregivers are especially prone to these feelings of isolation. We conducted in-depth interviews with rural caregivers of veterans with MS and used a grounded theory approach to data collection and analysis to illustrate some properties and dimensions of social isolation in a rural MS caregiving sample. These properties include: isolation and the rural environment; isolation from family; isolation from friends; and isolation from the …

Why “Ritiya” Could Not Go To Sell Vegetables? Myth Versus Reality In Terms Of Caste, Culture And Livelihood, Chandu Lal Chandrakar
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This qualitative study focuses on the challenges faced by the upper-caste Brahmin women in rural areas of the district of Katihar, Bihar, India by focusing on their education, cultural values, and choosing the means of livelihood in the milieu of newly transformed rural areas in Bihar. A drastically decreasing educational quality in terms of skill and morality combined with the message of education translated as knowing the rights to maintain equity and equality have excluded the upper-caste women from the benefits of government policies. There is a paucity of research that could reflect the suppressed voice of insecurity and psychological …

Achievement Gaps And The Doubly Disadvantaged: The Intersection Of Socioeconomic Status And Race/Ethnicity On Math And Reading Trajectories, Littisha A. Bates
Achievement Gaps And The Doubly Disadvantaged: The Intersection Of Socioeconomic Status And Race/Ethnicity On Math And Reading Trajectories, Littisha A. Bates
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
Numerous studies have examined both the income and race/ethnic achievement gaps. These gaps are particularly striking in the case of minority children, who are more likely than their non- Hispanic white counterparts to be living in poverty. This overlap in achievement gaps makes it difficult to clearly identify the most disadvantaged children. Using two designations in No Child Left Behind (NCLB), socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity, this study examines math and reading trajectories as children move through elementary school. Applying multilevel growth curves to four waves of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99, I examine the intersection of …

Roma And Czechs: Mindful Of Difference, Matthew Richard
Roma And Czechs: Mindful Of Difference, Matthew Richard
Southern Anthropologist
This essay applies theory and method developed over the past two decades by a number of cognitively- and psychologically-oriented social scientists to explore antipathy between Czechs and Roma in the present-day Czech Republic. It investigates how Czech understandings of personhood and otherness are variously organized, acquired, and practiced. Although ethnic hatred continues to be a problem in the Czech Republic, recent findings in psychological anthropology advise against assuming that it is reproduced wholesale from one generation to the next—nor even one instant to the next. The main source of data is the narratives of twenty-five young Czechs, who recall their …
Indigenous Politics, Sumak Kawsay, And Community Tourism: A Case Study From Amazonian Ecuador, Christopher Jarrett
Indigenous Politics, Sumak Kawsay, And Community Tourism: A Case Study From Amazonian Ecuador, Christopher Jarrett
Southern Anthropologist
This essay explores the relationship between visions of the ideal society that emerge from social movements and local, small-scale socio-economic and cultural projects that might contribute to achieving these ideals. It discusses the concept of sumak kawsay, a term meaning “living well” in the Kichwa language, which has been used in Ecuador to refer to a holistic concept of well-being involving economic, environmental, and social factors. Sumak kawsay originally emerged in the discourse of Ecuador’s indigenous movements, and the country has incorporated the concept, along with its Spanish-language version of buen vivir, into its most recent constitution in 2008. Buen …

Secondary Diaspora: Cape Verdean Immigration To The Southeastern United States, Jessica Lopes, Brandon Lundy
Southern Anthropologist
Diasporas are fluid cultural constructs that foster identity, community, and connections over time, distance, and social space. This study explores a derivative secondary diaspora to illustrate how and why diasporas are interesting social phenomena established out of complex socio-cultural, economic, and political conditions. Outside of the large Cape Verdean diaspora of New England, relatively little is known about other U.S. Cape Verdean communities. How do they maintain ties to both the primary diaspora in New England and their Cape Verdean homeland? This research examines second and third wave moves that push and pull individuals and families beyond established diasporic communities. …
