Study Of Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions To Identify Potential Aquitard Breach Locations Along The Wolf River, Tennessee, Sagar Pandit Nov 2020

Study Of Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions To Identify Potential Aquitard Breach Locations Along The Wolf River, Tennessee, Sagar Pandit

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inter-aquifer exchanges due to breaches in the confining clay layer can potentially contaminate the Memphis aquifer, as lesser-quality waters permeate from the unconfined aquifer. Losing river reaches could indicate breach locations, as these should depress water-table locally, resulting in downward vertical exchange fluxes (VEFs) along nearby streambeds. A spatial analysis of seepage meter measurements performed along the Wolf River identified three potentially losing sub-reaches, where VEFs were studied at a finer scale, using multiple point-scale methods. Results were mixed, displaying large spatial variability, possibly due to mismatches between the process and observation scales. Differential stream gaging was conducted to assess …

Reduced-Order Model Predictions Of Wind Turbines Via Mode Decomposition And Sparse Sampling, Ala' Eyad Qatramez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wind turbine wakes are dominated by several energetic turbulent coherent structures that oscillate at specific Strouhal numbers. Implications on wind power harvesting of these dynamic, induced features require accurate unsteady modeling. Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), a data-driven modal analysis, has demonstrated the ability to identify flow features based on specific frequencies. In this work, the selection of modes and data-driven DMD models pertaining to wakes with constant Strouhal number coherent structures are investigated using physically-informed criteria and sparse sampling. Both criteria are validated with a low Reynolds number flow behind a square cylinder. Next, the techniques are applied to data …

Rainfall Sampling Adjustment Factors: Spatial Variability And Effects Of Temporal Resolution Of Precipitation, Apeksha Marasini Nov 2020

Rainfall Sampling Adjustment Factors: Spatial Variability And Effects Of Temporal Resolution Of Precipitation, Apeksha Marasini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rainfall maxima over short durations are of great importance when designing stormwater drainage structures in smaller watersheds. Typically, design storms are extracted from rainfall Depth-Duration-Frequency curves developed from continuously gaged rainfall data collected over fixed (clock) time intervals. This can negatively bias our estimates of the true rainfall maxima when the gage collection interval is close to the duration of interest. Sampling Adjustment Factors (SAFs) have been used to rectify this error, but most studies have been limited to low-resolution data, and very few have focused on spatial variability. We use concurrent high resolution (1-minute) rainfall data from 809 stations …

Ring Polymers As A Model For Cellular Organization, Yu Zhu Aug 2020

Ring Polymers As A Model For Cellular Organization, Yu Zhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of experimental studies have been reported on the spatial organization and collective motion of living cells during the past few decades. To explain the experimentally observed results, we propose a novel approach, in which the cells are modeled as semi-flexible ring polymers. We found that the basic physical properties of the polymer rings, such as average area per cell, elongation, and orientation highly depend on the areal polymer density. Investigations of systems composed of two types of ring polymers with different bending rigidities show that multi-component ring-polymer systems exhibit microphase separation. Simulations of the ring polymers on a …
