Use of manipulatives to explore concepts qualitatively and quantitatively was investigated in this study. Particle diagrams, enthalpy, VSEPR, and stoichiometry; four classes of students were divided into two groups constituting test group and control group. Control groups received traditional pedagogy (Lewis diagrams) while test groups used manipulatives. Shapiro-Wilks, class means, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U tests, and item-by-item analyses were employed to quantify performance. Particle diagram results suggested that using modeling improves student learning outcomes based on means and Mann-Whitney U-test p-value. Enthalpy results indicated a larger mean for the test group than the control group, but no statistical difference between score …

The Effects Of The Interstellar Medium In Superbubble Breakout, Javier Ignacio Saavedra Aug 2024

The Effects Of The Interstellar Medium In Superbubble Breakout, Javier Ignacio Saavedra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Outflows driven by cascading supernovae (SNe), which originate from star clusters in the disks of spiral galaxies have been proposed as one of many explanations for lower than expected star formation rates. These outflows send gas out where is unable to form stars as part of a larger process called stellar feedback. The gas is sent trough thin over-dense shells called superbubbles and several analytical models exist to predict their growth and larger effects on their host galaxies. We propose a new model inspired by Weaver et al. (1977), Orr et al. (2022) and Ostriker & McKee (1988) which consists …

Effort-Reward Imbalance Among Student Athletes: Relationships With Exploitation, Well-Being, Performance Satisfaction, And Burnout, Joseph Michael White Jul 2024

Effort-Reward Imbalance Among Student Athletes: Relationships With Exploitation, Well-Being, Performance Satisfaction, And Burnout, Joseph Michael White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

College athletics has changed dramatically since the first conception of “sports clubs” centuries ago. The effort required by student-athletes and the rewards they receive for participation have increased in tandem with the money involved in college athletics. Recent changes that allow student-athletes to be paid for use of their name, image, and likeness have further complicated relationships among effort, reward, and outcomes. In the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model, effort without adequate reward produces stress and poor health-related outcomes, and research has supported this contention with regard to outcomes such as lower well-being and poorer performance among workers. However, few studies …

Computational Investigations Of Optical Properties Of Plasmonic Nanoparticle Assemblies By Dda Method, Saghar Gomrok Jul 2024

Computational Investigations Of Optical Properties Of Plasmonic Nanoparticle Assemblies By Dda Method, Saghar Gomrok

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plasmonics is a multidisciplinary field focused on the study of collective oscillations of conduction electrons in metals, known as plasmons. These plasmons lead to unique optical responses when coupled with nanostructures, enhancing electric fields at the metal surface at specific wavelengths. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) occurs at the interface of metal-dielectric structures, while localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) manifests within metallic nanoparticles (NPs), influenced by composition, size, shape, and surroundings. Gold (Au) and silver (Ag) NPs are well-known for distinctive LSPR-induced optical properties. Assemblies of Au or Ag metallic NPs allow further tuning of plasmonic behaviors. Moreover, packing metallic NPs …

The alcohol harm paradox (AHP) has been proposed to account for findings that socioeconomically deprived individuals experience disproportionate rates of alcohol-related harm, despite consuming similar or lower amounts of alcohol relative to more advantaged groups. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible are not well understood. Hogarth proposed the existence of three etiological pathways underpinning the AHP. Emerging adults (EAs) ages 21.5 to 25 (N = 466; Mage = 22.6, 57.5% female, 49.4% White, 38.6% Black, 31.1% non-college EAs), who reported consuming 3/4+ alcoholic drinks (for women/men) at least twice in the past month provided information on childhood family poverty, adverse childhood …

Sensorimotor Grounding In Novel Word Acquisition, John Michael Hollander Jul 2024

Sensorimotor Grounding In Novel Word Acquisition, John Michael Hollander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Embodied models of language comprehension assume that words become associated with sensorimotor experiences during word learning. Novel word learning paradigms may provide insight into embodied effects, but studies in this domain have yet to account for how concepts and information known in first language (L1) might influence the sensorimotor encoding of new words and concepts. Further, research on embodiment and bilingualism suggests that second language semantic representations involve sensorimotor encoding, but because participants in these studies are already proficiently bilingual, the manner and degree to which L1 information influences newly learned word representations remain unclear. The experiments in this dissertation …

A Review Of Optimal Procedures For Combining P-Values With A Proposal Of A Bayesian Approach To Identify Auxiliary Covariates, Tiffany Geistkemper Jul 2024

A Review Of Optimal Procedures For Combining P-Values With A Proposal Of A Bayesian Approach To Identify Auxiliary Covariates, Tiffany Geistkemper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we review a meta-analytic procedure for evaluating tests from several studies based on the combination of P -values. We provide a summary of properties of several well-known methods that combine P-values of continuous and independent test statistics. We note that it is not uncommon that, in the process of performing statistical tests, potentially important covariates are sometimes inadvertently not accounted for in the individual studies. We outline a procedure based on a Bayesian regression approach that introduces latent variables that may be used to account for and evaluate the significance of such covariates.
