Exploring The Structure Of Library And Information Science Web Space Based On Multivariate Analysis Of Social Tags, Soohyung Joo, Margaret E. I. Kipp

Information Science Faculty Publications

Introduction. This study examines the structure of Web space in the field of library and information science using multivariate analysis of social tags from the Website, Delicious.com. A few studies have examined mathematical modelling of tags, mainly examining tagging in terms of tri-partite graphs, pattern tracing and descriptive statistics. This study is one of the few studies to employ multivariate analysis in investigating dimensions of Web spaces based on social tagging data.

Method. This study examines the post data collected from a set of library and information science related Websites bookmarked on Delicious.com using a Web crawler. Post data consist …

Increases In Perspective Embedding Increase Reading Time Even With Typical Text Presentation: Implications For The Reading Of Literature, D. H. Whalen, Lisa Zunshine, Michael Holquist Nov 2015

Increases In Perspective Embedding Increase Reading Time Even With Typical Text Presentation: Implications For The Reading Of Literature, D. H. Whalen, Lisa Zunshine, Michael Holquist

English Faculty Publications

Reading fiction is a major component of intellectual life, yet it has proven difficult to study experimentally. One aspect of literature that has recently come to light is perspective embedding ("she thought I left" embedding her perspective on "I left"), which seems to be a defining feature of fiction. Previous work (Whalen et al., 2012) has shown that increasing levels of embedment affects the time that it takes readers to read and understand short vignettes in a moving window paradigm. With increasing levels of embedment from 1 to 5, reading times in a moving window paradigm rose almost linearly. However, …

Nhash: Randomized N-Gram Hashing For Distributed Generation Of Validatable Unique Study Identifiers In Multicenter Research, Guo-Qiang Zhang, Shiqiang Tao, Guangming Xing, Jeno Mozes, Bilal Zonjy, Samden D. Lhatoo, Licong Cui

Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: A unique study identifier serves as a key for linking research data about a study subject without revealing protected health information in the identifier. While sufficient for single-site and limited-scale studies, the use of common unique study identifiers has several drawbacks for large multicenter studies, where thousands of research participants may be recruited from multiple sites. An important property of study identifiers is error tolerance (or validatable), in that inadvertent editing mistakes during their transmission and use will most likely result in invalid study identifiers.

OBJECTIVE: This paper introduces a novel method called "Randomized N-gram Hashing (NHash)," …

Autopoiesis: Self-Creation In Nietzsche, Andrew Crown-Weber Sep 2015

Autopoiesis: Self-Creation In Nietzsche, Andrew Crown-Weber

Kaleidoscope

A recurrent theme in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche is his imperative that we must create ourselves. Though this theme of self-creation runs throughout the entirety of his published works, Nietzsche neither fully articulates in one place the processes and guidelines by which such self-creation could occur, nor does he fully resolve the paradoxes inherent in this concept. This paper attempts to distill from these fragments a coherent interpretation of both how we can and why we should, despite (or, paradoxically, because of) our many external and internal constraints, fashion ourselves the way an artist shapes a work of art.

The Opening Chapters Of: Only A Game, Andrew Crown-Weber

Kaleidoscope

These are what may turn out to be the first chapters of a novel tentatively called “Only A Game,” which could possibly be finished some time in the future, maybe. At present this book-to-be deals with the life of a young man who is addicted to one of the few new drugs to be discovered this century: massively multiplayer online role-playing games. If you are unfamiliar with this digital scourge, have some time on your hands, and haven’t eaten recently, I recommend Googling the term for an eye-opening experience. I won’t spoil all the many surprises and twists and intrigues …

The abstracts in this section were submitted by students who received Research and Creativity Awards for the summer of 2009. Many are not final reports because the projects were still in process when the submissions were due. Rather, they are progress reports. However, these abstracts provide a clear and wonderfully diverse picture of the broad range of scholarly activities being undertaken by undergraduates at the University of Kentucky.

Power And Pride: The Mythologization Of The Cossack Figure In Russian History And Its Impact On Modern Russian National Identity, Rachael Ulrich Aug 2015

Power And Pride: The Mythologization Of The Cossack Figure In Russian History And Its Impact On Modern Russian National Identity, Rachael Ulrich

Kaleidoscope

Our expedition traveled to the Don Cossack Ust- Khopiorskaia Stanitsa to record mythologized cultural practices in the form of rituals and performances. Located on the banks of the Don and Khopior River junction, about 1,500 people reside in a village consisting of several streets of wooden and stone houses, a cultural center, a school, and a few small markets. Most remaining residents in the village are pensioners, who support their meager incomes with backyard gardens. The young who have finished primary school leave for the nearest city, Volgograd, to find work or pursue further studies, because opportunities for neither exist …

An Analysis Of United States-Iran International Relations, James Tyler Chapman Aug 2015

An Analysis Of United States-Iran International Relations, James Tyler Chapman

Kaleidoscope

My research strove to further the knowledge of United States-Iran international relations through comprehensive analysis. I investigated and presented information on the internal politics of Iran, and I analyzed and commented on the organization of the government of Iran. I critically examined the historical scholarship on the affairs of state between the United States and Iran, and I investigated the current state of affairs and prospects for the future. From this understanding, it became possible and necessary for rigorously logical and insightful decisions to be made in the current political environment in which emotions and passions dominate, and I probed …

High-Risk Travel Distance And Number Of Primary Care Visits In A North Carolina Medicaid Population, Justin Allred, Christopher Duffrin, Jason Brinkley, John Jones Jun 2015

High-Risk Travel Distance And Number Of Primary Care Visits In A North Carolina Medicaid Population, Justin Allred, Christopher Duffrin, Jason Brinkley, John Jones

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Background: With nearly 20% of the U.S. population in rural areas, a lack of access to primary care may cause rural residents to forego recommended preventive care procedures, and suffer higher morbidity rates than their urban counterparts.

Methods: Medicaid billing data from 2009 to 2011 were analyzed to calculate the distance and duration that a Medicaid patient population had to travel when seeking primary care in the 29 rural counties of eastern North Carolina. Primary care codes were analyzed to detect any differences in access patterns for various complexity levels of physician visits. Data were also used to evaluate health …

Apoε2 And Education In Cognitively Normal Older Subjects With High Levels Of Ad Pathology At Autopsy: Findings From The Nun Study, Diego Iacono, Peter Zandi, Myron Gross, William R. Markesbery, Olga Pletnikova, Gay Rudow, Juan C. Troncoso

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Asymptomatic Alzheimer's disease (ASYMAD) subjects are individuals characterized by preserved cognition before death despite substantial AD pathology at autopsy. ASYMAD subjects show comparable levels of AD pathology, i.e. β-amyloid neuritic plaques (Aβ-NP) and tau-neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), to those observed in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and some definite AD cases. Previous clinicopathologic studies on ASYMAD subjects have shown specific phenomena of hypertrophy in the cell bodies, nuclei, and nucleoli of hippocampal pyramidal neurons and other cerebral areas. Since it is well established that the allele APOε4 is a major genetic risk factor for AD, we examined whether specific alleles of APOE …

Despite its easy use in ordinary conversation, the details of what is meant when a speaker raises questions relating to “diversity” can be more complicated that they at first appear. The materials included here seek to map the more predominant landmarks on that intellectual landscape.

Is Psychiatry Only Neurology? Or Only Abnormal Psychology? Déjà Vu After 100 Years, Jose De Leon Apr 2015

Is Psychiatry Only Neurology? Or Only Abnormal Psychology? Déjà Vu After 100 Years, Jose De Leon

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

Forgetting history, which frequently repeats itself, is a mistake. In General Psychopathology, Jaspers criticised early 20th century psychiatrists, including those who thought psychiatry was only neurology (Wernicke) or only abnormal psychology (Freud), or who did not see the limitations of the medical model in psychiatry (Kraepelin). Jaspers proposed that some psychiatric disorders follow the medical model (Group I), while others are variations of normality (Group III), or comprise schizophrenia and severe mood disorders (Group II). In the early 21st century, the players' names have changed but the game remains the same. The US NIMH is reprising both Wernicke's brain mythology …

The Perceptions, Knowledge, Benefits And Barriers Of Hispanics Regarding The Dietary Guidelines For Americans, Luisyana De Amor Gamboa Jan 2015

The Perceptions, Knowledge, Benefits And Barriers Of Hispanics Regarding The Dietary Guidelines For Americans, Luisyana De Amor Gamboa

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Background: Hispanics are the largest minority group in the U.S. and by the year 2060 the number of Hispanics is projected to double. They are disproportionately affected by obesity and chronic diseases which translate into decreased quality of life, loss of work opportunities and perceptions of injustice for the Hispanic population. The Dietary Guidelines (DG) provide information to help Americans make healthy food and physical activity choices and if followed can be a means of reducing the health disparity gap. However, culturally relevant recommendations specific to Hispanics’ health and nutritional habits are often lacking. The purpose of this study was …

Eating Spain: National Cuisine Since 1900, Matthew J. Wild Jan 2015

Eating Spain: National Cuisine Since 1900, Matthew J. Wild

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

Analyzing cookbooks, gastronomic guides, literature and film, this dissertationoutlines the creation of a Spanish national cuisine. Studying the works of Carmen de Burgos, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Dionisio Pérez, Ana María Herrera, Juan Mari Arzak and Ferrán Adrià among others, the project examines the evolution of this nationalist discourse by identifying common and recurring themes in an effort to extrapolate and describe the historical and cultural evolution of food from 1900 to the present day.

Within the framework of Food and Cultural Studies, this project treats cookbooks, culinary manifestos and guidebooks as texts. Influenced by a variety of culinary and gastronomic …

Pioneers In Exile: The China Inland Mission And Missionary Mobility In China And Southeast Asia, 1943-1989, Anthony J. Miller Jan 2015

Pioneers In Exile: The China Inland Mission And Missionary Mobility In China And Southeast Asia, 1943-1989, Anthony J. Miller

Theses and Dissertations--History

My dissertation explores how the movement of missionaries across Asia responded to the currents of nationalism, decolonization, and the Cold War producing ideas about sovereignty, race, and religious rights. More specifically, it looks at how U.S. evangelicals in the China Inland Mission, an international and interdenominational mission society, collaborated with Christians in the Atlantic and Pacific worlds. While doing so it also details the oft-neglected study of the post-China careers of former China missionaries by extensive use of oral histories. Forced to abandon its only field by the Chinese Communist Party, the mission redeployed as the Overseas Missionary Fellowship sending …
