Surface Reinforcement Strategies For Polymer-Based 3d Printing With Industrial Robotic Arm Apr 2024

Surface Reinforcement Strategies For Polymer-Based 3d Printing With Industrial Robotic Arm

Stander Symposium Projects

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology is rapidly advancing across diverse fields. For instance, the use of robotic arms in various AM processes has led to significant gains in printing flexibility and manufacturing scalability. However, despite these advancements, there remains a notable research gap concerning the mechanical properties of parts 3D-printed with robotic arms. This study focuses on developing a robotic fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D-printing process with a layer resolution of 50 μm to 200 μm. We propose a novel planar tool path strategy that can vary contour layer thickness within an infill layer to improve mechanical strength by minimizing air …

Attitudes Towards Service Dogs In-Training Apr 2024

Attitudes Towards Service Dogs In-Training

Stander Symposium Projects

This study looked at people’s attitudes towards having service dogs in-training in a classroom setting. Specifically, this study looked at attitudes of students, handlers (primary caretakers of the service dog in-training), and professors at the University of Dayton towards having the 4 Paws for Ability Service Dogs in-training in the classroom. People in general are hypothesized to have positive attitudes towards in-training service dogs in the classroom, but any negative attitudes could be due to the dogs being distracting, causing allergic reactions, or for religious reasons. Students and handlers are hypothesized to have positive attitudes towards in-training service dogs. Instructors …

Analysis Of Student Learning Of Hooke's Law

Stander Symposium Projects

Physics educators use assessments to better understand students’ understanding of concepts inan introductory physics course. The Force Concepts Inventory was used as a model to develop anassessment to measure student learning of Hooke’s Law in an introductory physics lab. Three learningtargets were written, which the assessment questions were based on. The assessment was given duringthe summer term, and revisions to the assessment increased the effectiveness of the questions to assessthe learning targets. Data was collected from six sections of the PHY 201L during the fall term. Data wasanalyzed to determine student understanding of Hooke’s Law and effectiveness of teaching instructionin …

Pilot Performance Analysis In Virtual Environment Apr 2024

Pilot Performance Analysis In Virtual Environment

Stander Symposium Projects

Predicting the performance of pilots in the aviation industry is essential for improving safety, efficiency, and overall operational effectiveness. Accurate evaluations of a pilot’s abilities can provide valuable insights for training programs, facilitate the development of customized training interventions, and contribute to the design of human-machine interfaces that align with individual skill sets. Moreover, understanding and predicting pilot performance can assist in identifying potential safety hazards and mitigating human factors that may contribute to errors in complex flight scenarios. This research primarily focuses on predicting and validating models for pilot performance during simulated flight operations, i.e. performing altitude or heading changes. …

Predicting Weather Dependent Energy Savings For Low-Income Residential Buildings For Specific Upgrades With Limited Building Data Apr 2024

Predicting Weather Dependent Energy Savings For Low-Income Residential Buildings For Specific Upgrades With Limited Building Data

Stander Symposium Projects

The pathway to sustainability is challenging. Multiple paths exist, but the key will be to achieve carbon reduction with the least cost. This could be achieved through large scale deployment of renewable energy; however, many studies have shown how important it is to reduce demand first. This study employs machine learning to analyze detailed energy profiles from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), estimating potential energy savings for natural gas heating, electric heating, and electric cooling through modifications such as insulation improvements, setpoint changes, infiltration reduction, or system efficiency enhancements. By comparing these building models with actual building data from …

Christianity And Judaism: Perspectives And Solutions To Poverty Apr 2024

Christianity And Judaism: Perspectives And Solutions To Poverty

Stander Symposium Projects

This literature review of sociology, anthropology, and psychology asks about how material and monetary poverty is addressed by Christianity and Judaism. The purpose was to explore how religious groups alleviate poverty and what their perspective is in regard to impoverished communities. We compared articles in various social disciplines about the prevalence of poverty in different religions. From our research, we found that these religions cope and view poverty in different ways. This is relevant because poverty is a real and growing issue around the world and individuals look to religion as a way to cope with their hardships.

Having A Father Figure In The Home And Its Effects On Juvenile Delinquency

Stander Symposium Projects

In this study we look at the effects of having a father figure in the home and how that can deter juvenile delinquency. We used the Pathways to Desistance data to look at a multitude of factors that contribute to juvenile delinquency which include frequency of offending, having a father figure in the home, domains of social support for the family, depression of the juvenile, anxiety of the juvenile, gender of the juvenile, ethnicity of the juvenile, the mother's current job, and the age at first offense of the juvenile. We recoded some of these variables and ran a negative …

The Role Violent Victimizations Play In Gang Involvement Apr 2024

The Role Violent Victimizations Play In Gang Involvement

Stander Symposium Projects

Many individuals have looked into how gang involvement can affect the rates of violent victimization experienced. Knowing why people join gangs is essential to understanding why there are so many victimizations. There is no one defining reason why people join gangs. Instead, many reasons can lead an individual to join these gangs. Many of the reasons people give for joining a gang include giving them an identity within society, a sense of belonging, independence from parents, protection, and loyalty. Gangs offer many opportunities for prospective gang members and then provide them for members when they join the gang. Individuals go …

Student Affairs And The Great Resignation: Why Employees Choose To Remain In Or Leave The Field Apr 2024

Student Affairs And The Great Resignation: Why Employees Choose To Remain In Or Leave The Field

Stander Symposium Projects

In the months following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Great Resignation, a mass exodus of employees, swept through higher education and student affairs units. This study investigates the factors influencing whether student affairs practitioners opted to remain in or exit the field post-pandemic. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in a constructivist worldview, structured interviews were conducted with eight participants currently employed in student affairs or who exited the field during the Great Resignation. Though participants cited having passion for their work and for helping students succeed, dissatisfaction stemmed largely from limited resources and minimal avenues for salary advancement within student affairs. …

Rainfall Patterns In East Africa: Implications Of Enso And Iod On Precipitation Variability Apr 2024

Rainfall Patterns In East Africa: Implications Of Enso And Iod On Precipitation Variability

Stander Symposium Projects

Precipitation in East Africa varies throughout the region, which is especially vulnerable to climate change due to its dependence on predictable precipitation for subsistence agriculture. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the changing seasonal and monthly patterns of rainfall in East Africa and their relation to ENSO and IOD using high resolution MSWEP data from 1980-2021. Northwestern and Southern East Africa experience one rainy season while equatorial East Africa experiences two rainy seasons. In most of the region with two rainy seasons, the first rainy season is longer with more precipitation and the second rainy season is shorter …

The Relationship Of College-Aged Students And Physical Activity: Barriers And Motivators

Stander Symposium Projects

College-aged individuals are a unique population that are in the prime years of developing life-long habits that can affect their physical and mental health. It is understood that adults in the US are more likely to meet the adult recommendations if they are given free access to recreation centers and have experience and knowledge of ways to exercise. The purpose of this research study is to learn about the effects that free on-campus recreational centers and access to education on physical activity have on students’ physical health and well-being.
