Learning While Teaching: Disability And Religion In The Classroom, Meghan Henning, Kirk Vangilder

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

This article serves as an introduction to themes explored in the special issue of the Journal of Disability and Religion on disability and religion in the classroom. Dr. Kirk VanGilder (Gallaudet University) and Dr. Meghan Henning (University of Dayton) share their reflections from two academic workshops focusing on pedagogical strategies for teaching at the intersection of disability studies, religion, and theology. Rather than limiting the concept of classrooms only to higher education environments, the authors explore the variety of sites where teaching and learning about disability and religion occur. Challenges, resources, and future directions are mapped out for transdisciplinary teaching …

Social Violence: The Role Of Gun Culture, Binod Kumar

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

The roots of violence are many because they sprout from diverse sources. Often the sources interact and confound to make violence a complex societal phenomenon. In the context of this chapter, violence is defined as intents and/or acts of doing harm to an individual or a group of people. Violence is thus a very broad term and encompasses numerous social and political grievances. The sources of violence can be broadly classified as natural, social, political, commercial, and technological. The classification of the sources, their respective roots, and associated impacts are presented in Table 4.1. Each of the sources of violence …

The Botany Of Empire In The Long Eighteenth Century, Yota Batsaki, Sarah Burke Cahalan, Anatole Tchikine Jan 2017

The Botany Of Empire In The Long Eighteenth Century, Yota Batsaki, Sarah Burke Cahalan, Anatole Tchikine

Marian Library Faculty Publications

This book brings together an international body of scholars working on eighteenth-century botany within the context of imperial expansion. The eighteenth century saw widespread exploration, a tremendous increase in the traffic in botanical specimens, taxonomic breakthroughs, and horticultural experimentation. The contributors to this volume compare the impact of new developments and discoveries across several regions, broadening the geographical scope of their inquiries to encompass imperial powers that did not have overseas colonial possessions—such as the Russian, Ottoman, and Qing empires and the Tokugawa shogunate—as well as politically borderline regions such as South Africa, Yemen, and New Zealand.

Litany Of Loreto In Images, University Of Dayton. Marian Library

Marian Library Art Exhibit Guides

The Litany of Loreto, so called because of its use in the sanctuary of Loreto (Italy) since at least as far back as 1531, was officially approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. Its origin is believed to be a medieval rhymed litany influenced by Eastern Marian devotion, in particular by the famous Hymnos Akathistos. Contrasting with the older Litany of All Saints, the components of the Loreto Litany are purely ad- or invocational prayers. It is the only approved Marian litany. As can be observed, for example, in the so-called Officia Mariana, many more Marian litanies were and are …

Print Versus Digital: How Medium Matters On 'House Of Cards', Patrick Ferrucci, Chad Painter Jan 2017

Print Versus Digital: How Medium Matters On 'House Of Cards', Patrick Ferrucci, Chad Painter

Communication Faculty Publications

This study utilizes textual analysis to analyze how journalists are depicted on the Netflix drama House of Cards. Through the lens of orientalism and cultivation, researchers examine how depictions of print and digital journalism would lead viewers to see digital journalists as less ethical and driven by self-gain, while also viewing technology as an impediment to quality journalism. These findings are then discussed as a means for understanding how these depictions could affect society.

Cse: U: Mixed-Initiative Personal Assistant Agents, Joshua W. Buck, Saverio Perugini, Tam Nguyen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Specification and implementation of flexible human-computer dialogs is challenging because of the complexity involved in rendering the dialog responsive to a vast number of varied paths through which users might desire to complete the dialog. To address this problem, we developed a toolkit for modeling and implementing task-based, mixed-initiative dialogs based on metaphors from lambda calculus. Our toolkit can automatically operationalize a dialog that involves multiple prompts and/or sub-dialogs, given a high-level dialog specification of it. The use of natural language with the resulting dialogs makes the flexibility in communicating user utterances commensurate with that in dialog completion paths—an aspect …

Learning Transfer: The Missing Link To Learning Among School Leaders In Burkina Faso And Ghana, Corinne Brion, Paula A. Cordeiro

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Every year, billions of dollars are spent on development aid and training around the world. However, only 10% of this training results in the transfer of knowledge, skills, or behaviors learned in the training to the work place. Ideally, learning transfer produces effective and continued application by learners of the knowledge and skills they gained through their learning activities. Currently, there is a limited body of research examining the factors that hinder and promote learning transfer in professional development, particularly the professional development of school leaders in developing countries. This qualitative exploratory study sought to address the gap in the …

An Undergraduate Cell Biology Lab: Western Blotting To Detect Proteins From Drosophila Eye, Neha Gogia, Ankita Sarkar, Amit Singh

Biology Faculty Publications

We have developed an undergraduate laboratory to allow detection and localization of proteins in the compound eye of Drosophila melanogaster, a.k.a fruit fly. This lab was a part of the undergraduate curriculum of the cell biology laboratory course aimed to demonstrate the use of Western Blotting technique to study protein localization in the adult eye of Drosophila. Western blotting, a two-day laboratory exercise, can be used to detect the presence of proteins of interests from total protein isolated from a tissue. The first day involves isolation of proteins from the tissue and SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide) gel …

Meeting The Needs Of Students With Disabilities, Charles J. Russo, Allan G. Osborne Jr. Jan 2017

Meeting The Needs Of Students With Disabilities, Charles J. Russo, Allan G. Osborne Jr.

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2005) requires states, through local school boards, to provide students with disabilities with a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment consistent with the content of their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). As important as it is to educate students with disabilities, the cost of serving these children is much higher than that of their peers in regular education.

Most recently, the Tenth Circuit upheld Rowley’s “some educational benefit” standard in Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District RE-1 (2015). In Endrew F., the panel affirmed that a school board in …

Symbols Of Grace: Emblems Of The Immaculate Conception, University Of Dayton. Marian Library

Marian Library Art Exhibit Guides

In an article in The Dictionary of Art, Jochem Becker explains: “The emblem book was an artistic genre that flourished in Europe particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries, though it continued beyond this. An emblem requires intellectual effort and results in the communication of a moral lesson.”

Twenty-seven of the emblems selected for this exhibit are from a book by the Benedictine Joseph Zoller (d. 1750), a monk of the monastery of Sts. Udalricus and Afra, near Augsburg, Germany. This work, entitled Conceptus Chronographicus de Concepta Sacra Deipara, was published at Augsburg in 1712. It consists of 100 copperplate …

The University of Dayton hosted a unique exhibit in the spring of 2017 highlighting the John Stokes and Mary's Gardens archival collection. In addition to materials from the collection, the exhibit also featured a live garden with flowers named for the Blessed Virgin Mary inside the library, and specially commissioned artwork by artist Holly Schapker. The library was able to reach different audiences and hopes this will serve as an example in thinking of more interactive ways for visitors to experience an archival exhibit.

Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Problems For Ordinary Differential Equations With Dependence On Higher Order Derivatives, Ahlam Abid, Paul Eloe Jan 2017

Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Problems For Ordinary Differential Equations With Dependence On Higher Order Derivatives, Ahlam Abid, Paul Eloe

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper, the compression contraction fixed point theorem is applied to a right focal boundary value problem for a second order ordinary differential equation to provide sufficient conditions for existence of solutions in a cone. The nonlinear term is a function of three variables and singularities are allowed. A cone is defined in the Banach space C1[0, 1] and concavity of derivatives of solutions plays a key role. A family of examples is provided in which explicit sufficient conditions are exhibited.

Jews In Medieval England: Teaching Representations Of The Other, Miriamne Ara Krummel, Tison Pugh

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

This volume examines the teaching of Jewishness within the context of medieval England. It covers a wide array of academic disciplines and addresses a multitude of primary sources, including medieval English manuscripts, law codes, philosophy, art, and literature, in explicating how the Jew-as-Other was formed. Chapters are devoted to the teaching of the complexities of medieval Jewish experiences in the modern classroom. Jews in Medieval England: Teaching Representations of the Other also grounds medieval conceptions of the Other within the contemporary world where we continue to confront the problematic attitudes directed toward alleged social outcasts.
