Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen
Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of large scale electric power generation in the state of Florida by means of solar conversion. Such systems convert solar radiation directly to electricity or to thermal energy and subsequently to electricity. With the latter method, solar energy is initially collected and converted to heat at high temperature through a working fluid. The heat is then used to power conventional heat engine generator systems. Several methods have been proposed for converting sunlight to useful work. The most promising of these will be examined from a technological and economic viewpoint.

The Effects Of Gap Stability On Entrance Ramp Merging, Lyn Evalyn Lane
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report analyzes freeway data from a moving merge control system in Tampa, Florida. The distribution of velocity at sensors in the roadway is plotted and compared to a normal distribution. The size of the gaps at each sensor are computed and compared to those at a sensor downstream. The distributions of the change in gap size are plotted for all gaps and then for gaps between the same pairs of vehicles, to determine the effects of prohibiting lane changing. The expected time of arrival of the gaps at a point downstream are computed, compared to the actual time of …

Simulation Of A Spring Constrained Hypocyclic Roller Mechanism, Wayne R. Bomstad
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Hypocyclic mechanisms are the basic building blocks in the design of many widely used mechanical systems such as gear differentials, computing devices and other useful instruments. This paper presents a unique variation to the conventional hypocyclic system configuration in that the rotating elements are spring constrained instead of rigid arm constrained. A mathematical model was develop to simulate the operational characteristics of the mechanism. The model was coded in Fortran IV computer language and a simulation survey was conducted for a set of geometrical and system constraints. The results of this survey indicate that the mathematical model could be a …
Stabilization System Environmental Disturbance Modeling And Analysis, Lawrence E. Sieb
Stabilization System Environmental Disturbance Modeling And Analysis, Lawrence E. Sieb
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Systems that operate in airborne environments and rely on the resolution provided by optical sensors require a stabilization system to isolate the line-of-sight (LOS) from the operating environment. For systems employing television sensors, stabilization accuracy is of prime importance in maintaining sufficient picture resolution to allow target identification and recognition at maximum ranges. The development of system models that accurately predict stabilization performance is important both in design trade-offs and in the system design and testing [l]. Two basic concepts are available for achieving LOS stabilization; momentum stabilization which employs a spinning mass and rate stabilization which utilizes inertial rate …

A Study Of Assimilative Capacities For Receiving Streams, Hadi. Elmi
A Study Of Assimilative Capacities For Receiving Streams, Hadi. Elmi
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Literature reviews on various stream processes which contribute to reoxygenation and deoxygenation was presented. These processes include atmospheric reaeration, photosynthesis-respiration, biochemical oxygen consumption, and benthic demand. Measuring these parameters in a selected stream is a complex and costly operation. On the other hand, prediction models developed are specific to particular location and environmental conditions and can only be applied to similar situations. Computer models such as "RIVER" are available and could be used to predict dissolved oxygen concentrations along a waterway for a specified set of stream conditions. The model "RIVER" was calibrated by using the existing conditions of flow …
Numerical Taxonomy Of Anaerobic Bacteria Isolated From Ground Water Of A Sanitary Landfill, Kenneth J. Curry
Numerical Taxonomy Of Anaerobic Bacteria Isolated From Ground Water Of A Sanitary Landfill, Kenneth J. Curry
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Section I: Facultative and obligatory anaerobic bacteria were isolated from the ground water of a sanitary landfill characterized by sandy soil and a periodically high water table. Isolates were examined for 63 characteristics and subject to numerical analysis. Eight clusters were established and correlations with conventional taxonomy were made. The Bacteriodaceae were found to be the dominant group of organisms by the methods employed. The anaerobic population was observed to decrease as the period of seasonal rainfall ended. At the same time, gram positive anaerobes were largely replaced with gram negative ones. Leaching between sampling sites (wells) made correlations between …
Computer Aided Analysis Of Flat Plate Solar Collectors, Thomas L. Hartman
Computer Aided Analysis Of Flat Plate Solar Collectors, Thomas L. Hartman
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A computer model of a flat plate solar collector has been devised. The model is able to simulate most common types of collectors, with up to three transparent covers of any material. Using primarily equations available from the literature the model calculates the transmission through the cover plates, the heat losses, and the useful heat gain. Derivation of all equations used are presented. A new method is presented for calculation of the mean plate temperature which differs from that commonly used in the literature. Experimental evidence is presented indicating that when transient effects are negligible the model is able to …

Nitrogen Transformation In Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plants, Mark Lee Morris
Nitrogen Transformation In Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plants, Mark Lee Morris
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant and animal life; however, its presence in concentrations exceeding assimilative capacities of receiving water bodies is undesirable. Therefore, the form and concentration of total nitrogen released in wastewater effluents is of great concern. During the course of this study, the nitrogen analysis was performed on the various unit processes of the Florida Technological University wastewater treatment plant. The average percent removal of nitrogen between plant influent and clarifier effluent was 30.5% during the month of August 1975. It is believed that the nitrogen removal is attributed to luxury uptake by the biomass through …

"Storm", A Mathematical Model Applied To The Shingle Creek Basin, Jay G. Foy
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Stormwater management necessitates a regional plan based on the best practical methods. "Storm", a mathematical model, is employed to simulate runoff conditions in the Shingle Creek Basin. The computed runoff quantity is calibrated directly with the streams hydrograph. Runoff quality is predicted with two sets of pollutant loading rates. The scope of the model is expanded by development of parametric curves that can be used to convert measured quality data to input land use loadings. A parametric study is also performed to fabricate the effects of urbanization on the Shingle Creek Basin.
