“The Role Of Poultry On Food Insecurity In Mozambique”, Austin Heinisch
“The Role Of Poultry On Food Insecurity In Mozambique”, Austin Heinisch
Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hunger, poverty, and starvation in developing countries are some of the most prevalent challenges facing the world today but many people outside of these areas are not fully aware as to just how bad it is. In the country of Mozambique, where the following research took place, food insecurity levels are rampant, and many different groups/companies are trying to change that. Through a service-learning study abroad program in the summer of 2019, my group and I worked with the local company New Horizons to research ways in which poultry production for both the company and their rural out growers could …
Negative Urgency Predicts Maladaptive Coping Strategies, Alec Martin
Negative Urgency Predicts Maladaptive Coping Strategies, Alec Martin
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Negative urgency is defined as the disposition to act rashly when under distress. This personality subtype is strongly tied to problematic alcohol and substance use, self-harming behaviors, and binge eating following a distressful period (Cyders et al., 2013; Fischer et al., 2004). The current study hypothesized that participants (62.07% Female, M = 19.81, SD = 4.16, 73.28% White, 6.90% Hispanic, 6.90% African American, 3.45% Native American/Alaskan Native, 3.45% Asian American, 3.45% Middle Eastern, 1.72% Other) who scored high in negative urgency would endorse more maladaptive coping strategies after a negative mood induction (n = 57), compared to a neutral …

Locating Drone Battery Supply Stations To Facilitate The Delivery Of Medical Supplies In Low And Middle-Income Countries, Madeline Suellentrop
Locating Drone Battery Supply Stations To Facilitate The Delivery Of Medical Supplies In Low And Middle-Income Countries, Madeline Suellentrop
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the sub-Saharan region of Africa, the inability to perform emergency blood transfusions due to an inadequate blood supply has led to high fatality rates, especially among women and children. The prevalence of disease in this region limits the supply of local blood donations and, if blood is imported, then the region’s poor infrastructure inhibits fast distribution. There is a need for a technological update in the current process that overcomes the limitations of regional transportation, and drones present one promising solution for delivering small, lightweight items such as blood units. The current focus of this new delivery method is …

The National Football League (NFL) is the most popular sports league in the world, with millions of viewers every game and billions of dollars generated every season. Statistics are an important part of an NFL team’s business operating model and contribute greatly towards their decision making. Every season, general managers try to sign players that give the team the highest probability of winning games throughout the year. There are many factors that go into this decision, including the amount of money the team has to spend and the value that available players can bring to a team. Teams must abide …
Quantifying The Benefits Of A Collaborative Supply Chain Network Using A Discrete-Time Vehicle Routing Model, Matthew Walters
Quantifying The Benefits Of A Collaborative Supply Chain Network Using A Discrete-Time Vehicle Routing Model, Matthew Walters
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The transportation industry contributed around one trillion dollars to the economy in 2016 accounting for 8.9% percent of the GDP. In 2017, it was responsible for 1.5 billion tons of CO2 emissions. With the American Trucking agency predicting a 35% growth in the trucking industry between 2016 and 2027, there are rising concerns about the impact the trucking industry will have on the economy and the environment. The trucking industry is also very inefficient with many trucks driving with empty loads or with less than full capacity loads. There is potential to save billions of dollars and cut back …

Throughout the state of Arkansas, there are grave disparities in education resources apparent in specific school districts and at a state level. The Arkansas Department of Education, formerly titled the State Department of Education, was established in 1931 by Act 169 in the Arkansas General Assembly. Since then, the department has gone under multiple reforms and expansions. From desegregation to the Clinton administration’s improvements in early childhood education, Arkansas has had a tumultuous past in terms of public education and has consistently been ranked in the bottom twentieth percentile of the nation’s school systems. The purpose of this paper is …
The Mediating Role Of Self-Blame In The Relationship Between Alcohol Intoxication, Bystander Intervention And Ptsd Symptoms Following A Sexual Assault, Hannah Sawyer
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction: Sexual assault (SA) incidents are common. One in five women will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime (NSVRC, 2015); some will experience Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) because of SA experiences (Resnick et al., 1993). Further, approximately two-thirds of all cases of sexual assault involve consumption of alcohol by the victim, perpetrator, or both (Testa & Livingston, 2009). Previous research has been dedicated to delineating cognitive and situational factors surrounding SA occurrences that contribute to risk for developing PTSD (Jaffe et al., 2013; Peter-Hagene & Ullman, 2018). Peter-Hagene and Ullman (2018) found that SA survivors that engage in more self-blame …
Static Force Analysis Of A Porcine Mitral Valve To Determine Self-Supporting Capabilities Of The Leaflets, Jacob Paris
Static Force Analysis Of A Porcine Mitral Valve To Determine Self-Supporting Capabilities Of The Leaflets, Jacob Paris
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The mitral valve (MV) is responsible for controlling the flow between the left atrium (LA) and left ventricle (LV). This includes maintaining valve closure under high systolic pressures. Mitral regurgitation (MR) occurs when the valve fails to completely close and blood flows in the reverse direction, from the LV to the LA, during ejection. This type of valvular heart disease is prevalent among elderly individuals and is becoming increasingly common as the population ages. In order to better understand how to properly treat this large group of affected individuals, the mechanics of the MV during high systolic pressures must be …
Characterizing High Entropy Alloys For Hypersonic Applications, Katherine Pettus
Characterizing High Entropy Alloys For Hypersonic Applications, Katherine Pettus
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this paper, the properties of a new and broad class of materials, high entropy alloys (HEAs), were investigated and evaluated for hypersonic applications. The plan was to identify candidate hypersonic HEAs and model the high-temperature strength using new advanced material models that account for asymmetry and anisotropy characterized with available test data. After accessing a local database of HEAs and their material properties in collaboration with Dr. Gorsse et al., it was realized the knowledge of HEAs is currently very broad but lacks depth. While hundreds of HEAs have been created and tested, none so far have both sufficient …
Noise Control In Sorting Conveyors, Eyra Herrera
Noise Control In Sorting Conveyors, Eyra Herrera
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
E-commerce has increased the necessity of effective material handling equipment in warehouses and distribution centers. Sorter conveyors systems facilitate material handling by providing a reliable and automated system to classify and distribute products in a gentle and rapid manner. With the steady increase of speed in sorter conveyors to satisfy today’s industry demand, some systems have started to produce high noise levels that could potentially affect workers’ health. Since decreasing the speed of these conveyors is not a viable option to decrease noise in sorter equipment, industries have opted to find other ways to apply noise control to their equipment. …
The Effects Of Interactivity On Memory Relating To Presence In Virtual Environments, Jenny Wong
The Effects Of Interactivity On Memory Relating To Presence In Virtual Environments, Jenny Wong
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The overall effectiveness of virtual environments is often linked to and measured by degrees of presence, commonly defined as the psychological sensation of “being there” (Schubert et al., 1999). Psychologists agree that attention and involvement through interactivity play a role in presence (Hartmann et al., 2015; Schubert et al., 1999; Witmer and Singer, 1998). Because attention is critical in encoding information into memory storage, looking at how memory relates to presence is another topic of interest. In this study, participants (N = 30) played through a 3D virtual reconstruction of a Pompeian house under one of two conditions: free-roam …

Supply Chain Student Biases Regarding Transportation Jobs, Drew Mahosky
Supply Chain Student Biases Regarding Transportation Jobs, Drew Mahosky
Information Systems Undergraduate Honors Theses
As a Supply Chain student at the University of Arkansas, I have made some observations about how students view jobs with a transportation focus. I have seen other students gravitate towards jobs on the consumer-side of the supply chain job market, with many joining large companies like Walmart and Amazon. The university itself has helped instill this feeling in me as well, due to their focus more on the consumer-side of supply chains. There have only been two classes offered to me thus far in my degree plan that I felt truly addressed transportation-side supply chains at all, with them …
Scheduling Allocation And Inventory Replenishment Problems Under Uncertainty: Applications In Managing Electric Vehicle And Drone Battery Swap Stations, Amin Asadi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, motivated by electric vehicle (EV) and drone application growth, we propose novel optimization problems and solution techniques for managing the operations at EV and drone battery swap stations. In Chapter 2, we introduce a novel class of stochastic scheduling allocation and inventory replenishment problems (SAIRP), which determines the recharging, discharging, and replacement decisions at a swap station over time to maximize the expected total profit. We use Markov Decision Process (MDP) to model SAIRPs facing uncertain demands, varying costs, and battery degradation. Considering battery degradation is crucial as it relaxes the assumption that charging/discharging batteries do not …

An Experimental Study Of Evaporites On Titan: Implications For Lake Composition And Future Missions, Ellen Czaplinski
An Experimental Study Of Evaporites On Titan: Implications For Lake Composition And Future Missions, Ellen Czaplinski
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Titan is the only other planetary body in the solar system with liquid on the surface. With a surface temperature and pressure of 89 – 94 K and 1.5 bar (N2), respectively, Titan’s lakes are comprised of liquid hydrocarbons, predominantly methane and ethane. Over time, Titan’s lakes may evaporate, leaving behind residual deposits (evaporites). The evaporation processes and composition of the evaporites is poorly understood. I address these outstanding questions by experimentally investigating the physical and spectral properties of evaporites at Titan surface conditions using an experimental chamber.
Chapter 1 addresses the formation of ethylene evaporites. Ethylene evaporites form more …
Investigation Of Iron-Nickel Based Nanoparticles As Catalysts For Oxygen Evolution Reaction (Oer), Prashant Acharya
Investigation Of Iron-Nickel Based Nanoparticles As Catalysts For Oxygen Evolution Reaction (Oer), Prashant Acharya
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hydrogen fuel is increasingly seen as an appealing alternative by both the scientific and the industrial communities in the drive towards a clean energy future. Hydrogen, unlike fossil-based fuels, does not release carbon dioxide, a chief component of greenhouse gases, upon combustion. However, more than 95% of the hydrogen in the world is still produced by burning fossil fuels as this method is currently the only economically feasible option at a large industrial scale.
Water electrolysis shows a lot of potential in both hydrogen generation and in the storage of energy from renewable sources such as wind and sunlight. Likewise, …
Efficacy Of Conditional And Constitutive Crispr/Cas9 In Rice Genome, Zahra Alizada
Efficacy Of Conditional And Constitutive Crispr/Cas9 In Rice Genome, Zahra Alizada
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Constitutive expression of Cas9 leads to a higher editing efficiency; however, it also increases the chances of off-target mutations. Thus, transient expression of Cas9 is a desirable approach to achieve higher targeting efficiency and to curb the off-target effects. It was previously shown that heat-inducible expression of Cas9 had an editing efficiency of 45% as compared to the strong constitutive expression, and the heat-shock induced mutations were inherited by the next generation. In this study, cold-inducible promoter, AtRD29a, was used for driving Cas9 expression, and evaluated for its editing efficiency upon cold-treatment on the GUS transgene loci. The expression analysis …
On The Epistemic Significance Of Expert Conversion, Dax R. Bennington
On The Epistemic Significance Of Expert Conversion, Dax R. Bennington
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Much of our knowledge of the world depends on the testimony of experts. Experts sometimes change their minds and disagree with each other. What ought a novice do when an expert changes their mind? This dissertation provides an account of when expert conversion is epistemically significant and how the novice ought to rationally defer to expert conversion. In answering when expert conversion is epistemically significant, I provide a diagnostic tool that emphasizes that epistemically significant expert conversion seems to be evidence-based and that there is an absence of cognitive biases on the part of the converting expert. In answering how …
An Automated Method To Enrich And Expand Consumer Health Vocabularies Using Glove Word Embeddings, Mohammed Ibrahim
An Automated Method To Enrich And Expand Consumer Health Vocabularies Using Glove Word Embeddings, Mohammed Ibrahim
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Clear language makes communication easier between any two parties. However, a layman may have difficulty communicating with a professional due to not understanding the specialized terms common to the domain. In healthcare, it is rare to find a layman knowledgeable in medical jargon, which can lead to poor understanding of their condition and/or treatment. To bridge this gap, several professional vocabularies and ontologies have been created to map laymen medical terms to professional medical terms and vice versa. Many of the presented vocabularies are built manually or semi-automatically requiring large investments of time and human effort and consequently the slow …
Crop Response To Low-Dose Dicamba, Mason Castner
Crop Response To Low-Dose Dicamba, Mason Castner
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The introduction of dicamba-resistant (DR) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) followed by a label allowing over-the-top applications of dicamba in the 2017 provided growers an additional option for broadleaf weed control. Because non-DR soybean is sensitive to low concentrations of dicamba, postemergence dicamba applications present growers choosing to plant non-DR soybean with concerns of damage from off-target movement through physical drift and volatilization of the herbicide as well as tank-contamination from prior dicamba application. Consequences of low-dose dicamba exposure on sensitive vegetative and reproductive soybean have been well researched, but little is known regarding the …
Gradient Estimates And The Fundamental Solution For Higher-Order Elliptic Systems With Lower-Order Terms, Michael J. Duffy Jr.
Gradient Estimates And The Fundamental Solution For Higher-Order Elliptic Systems With Lower-Order Terms, Michael J. Duffy Jr.
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Here we generalize the higher-order divergence-form elliptic differential equations studied by Barton in [4] by the inclusion of certain lower-order terms. The methods used here compare to those used in [4], with the addition of further Sobolev-type estimates to handle included lower-order terms. In section 3 we derive a Caccioppoli inequality in which we bound the L2 norm of the mth order gradient, in terms of the L2 norm of the solution. In section 5 we adapt some of the ideas from [9] to derive Lp bounds on gradients of solutions as a substitute for a reverse Holder inequality. Finally …
Evaluation Of Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Furrow-Irrigated Rice On A Silt-Loam Soil In Arkansas, Jordan M. Slayden
Evaluation Of Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Furrow-Irrigated Rice On A Silt-Loam Soil In Arkansas, Jordan M. Slayden
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the number one rice (Oryza sativa)-producing state in the United States, Arkansas also ranks fourth as the largest user of groundwater. Recently, due to the development of drought- resistant hybrid cultivars, the furrow-irrigated rice production system has become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional flood-irrigated production with respect to conserving groundwater and maintaining yield. However, other environmental parameters, like greenhouse gas emissions, specifically nitrous oxide (N2O), have yet to be evaluated under furrow-irrigated rice. The objectives of this study were to i) evaluate the effects of site position (i.e., up-, mid-, and down-slope) and tillage treatment [i.e., conventional tillage …
