Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heterogeneous catalysis, including thermal- and photocatalysis, is a key technology toward developing industrial processes for a sustainable future. Therefore, the study of surface reactions and catalyst properties includes most studies in this area. There has been extensive work put into developing experimental and computational tools to understand surface and interface phenomena, describe mechanistic chemical transformations, and simulate the behavior of surface reactions to develop better catalysts and more efficient processes.

The collection consists of a series of interviews conducted from 1974 to 1980 by students for a course (IDL 105, Women in Maine: An Autobiographical Approach) taught by Maryann Hartman in the department of Speech and Communications at the University of Maine. Students asked a variety of informants for their opinions about the present and future roles of women in Maine. Each informant discussed this in the context of their own lives and experiences, therefore the individual interviews cover a wide range of topics. The University of Maine Department of Chemistry offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in chemistry, including a Ph.D. program, the establishment of which is documented in these records. The Department is housed in Aubert Hall which was constructed in 1914 and named in honor of the first University of Maine chemistry professor, Professor Albert Aubert, who came to the University of Maine in 1874, and departed in 1909.

Edward Osgood Merrill was born in 1916, the son of Lucius Merrill. Hr graduated in 1938 from the University of Maine in Chemistry. He was a Professor of Biochemistry of the Agricultural Experiment Station until he retired in 1979. He died in 1987.

The Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM) is a long-term (14+ years), whole-watershed experiment designed to study ecosystem responses to acid deposition. One watershed has been treated bimonthly by helicopter with nitrogen and sulfur since 1989. Results have documented progressive acidification of soils and streams, substantial losses of soil nutrients (e.g., calcium), increased nitrogen cycling, and changes in tree foliar chemistry. Little research has been done on phosphorus, a critical nutrient in ecosystems. This project will evaluate the effects of long-term watershed acidification on metal mobilization (focusing on aluminum and iron) and linked effects on phosphorus at BBWM by studying …

The University of Maine's Laboratory for Surface Science & Technology (LASST) proposes to purchase a high performance X-ray Diffraction (XRD) system to provide critical information about the structural properties of materials at the atomic, molecular, and nanometer scale. The versatile instrument will be composed of an X-ray generator, X-ray mirrors and lenses, a hybrid monochromator, a high resolution goniometer and sample cradle, slits and collimators, a fast multichannel detector and Xe proportional counter, and a high temperature sample stage. This research will investigate how the elements aluminum (Al) and phosphorus (P), both originally from soil, interact in water moving through soil pores to downstream lakes in ways that prevent P from being biologically available to algae in surface waters. This causes oligotrophic conditions (i.e., water with very low nutrient concentrations). Solid aluminum hydroxide will adsorb and can permanently capture P from the water if the acidity is low. Changes in the acidity of surface waters from "acid rain", climate change, or other factors should induce changes in the interaction between Al and P, and thus changes in the biological …

One common assumption in interpreting ice-core CO(2) records is that diffusion in the ice does not affect the concentration profile. However, this assumption remains untested because the extremely small CO(2) diffusion coefficient in ice has not been accurately determined in the laboratory. In this study we take advantage of high levels of CO(2) associated with refrozen layers in an ice core from Siple Dome, Antarctica, to study CO(2) diffusion rates. We use noble gases (Xe/Ar and Kr/Ar), electrical conductivity and Ca(2+) ion concentrations to show that substantial CO(2) diffusion may occur in ice on timescales of thousands of years. We …

In lieu of Abstract, excerpt from Conclusion of Voltammetric Study of Interaction of Copper and Model Fungal Secreted Ligands: In summary, the cyclic voltammetry study shows evidence that the chelatormediated Fenton reaction is favored in the wood cell wall, where it may promote the degradation process. Also, reaction mechanisms between Cu(II), 2,3-DHBA and H202 have been proposed which provide at least partial explanations for the H202 cycle, and the mechanism for non-enzymatic, chelator-mediated Fenton reactions in brown rot wood decay processes. Future research in this area should explore cyclic voltarnrnetry analyses of Cu(I1) and ligands secreted by fungi, such as …

Major chemical species (Cl−, NO−3, SO2−4, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) from 24 snowpits (sampled at a resolution of 3 cm, total 2995 samples) collected from northern, central, and southern Greenland were used for this investigation. The annual and seasonal (winter and summer) concentration of each chemical species was calculated and used to study the spatial distribution of chemical species over the central portion of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The relationships between the concentration and the flux of chemical species(Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, Na+, K+, NH4+, Mg2+, Ca2+) versus snow accumulation rate were examined at GISP2 and 20D in Greenland, Mount Logan from the St. Elias Range, Yukon Territory, Canada, and Sentik Glacier from the northwest end of the Zanskar Range in the Indian Himalayas. At all sites, only nitrate flux is significantly(α = 0.05) related to snow accumulation rate. Of all the chemical series, only nitrate concentration data are normally …

[From conclusion] Although the cause of the differences in chemistry of the Xixabangma glacier fresh snow events cannot be adequately inferred from the limited number of samples available for this study, the existence of such different chemical signatures is encouraging for future studies in the region.
