: Previous studies have highlighted inequalities and gender differences in the transport system. Some factors or fairness characteristics (FCs) strongly influence gender fairness in the transport system. The difference with previous studies, which focus on general concepts, is the incorporation of level 3 FCs, which are more detailed aspects or measures that can be implemented by companies or infrastructure managers and operators in order to increase fairness and inclusion in each use case. The aim of this paper is to find computational solutions, Bayesian networks, and analytic hierarchy processes capable of hierarchizing level 3 FCs and to predict by simulation …
Risk Management In Motorway Ppp Projects: Empirical-Based Guidelines, Nunzia Carbonara, Nicola Costantino, Louis Gunnigan, Roberta Pellegrino
Risk Management In Motorway Ppp Projects: Empirical-Based Guidelines, Nunzia Carbonara, Nicola Costantino, Louis Gunnigan, Roberta Pellegrino
Articles
This paper deals with the topic of risk management in Public–Private Partnership (PPP). The analysis of the related literature reveals that risks must be analyzed and managed on a context-specific approach, and that there is a lack of a comprehensive study on the appropriate risk mitigation strategies for each risk embedded in PPP projects. Focusing on the transport sector, based on the results of a Delphi survey, the paper provides guidelines for both public and private parties in defining a list of significant risks in PPP motorway projects, and identifying for them both the effective allocation and the suitable mitigation …
Carbon Emissions, Transport And Location: A Sustainability Toolkit For Stakeholders In Office Development, Emer Byrne, Eamonn Donnelly
Carbon Emissions, Transport And Location: A Sustainability Toolkit For Stakeholders In Office Development, Emer Byrne, Eamonn Donnelly
Conference papers
The objective of this paper was to devise a tool to assist urban planners in the environmental component of decision making for the location of workplace destinations. It examines the transport related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated per person travelling to workplace destinations in the Greater Dublin Area (GDA). The research was carried out based on the following datasets: (i) Central Statistics Office (CSO) 2006 Place of Work Census of Anonymised Records (POWCAR) and (ii) CO2 emissions per mode of transport. A model was created combining the datasets within a 250 metre grid square coding of the GDA. The calculations …

Carbon Emissions, Transport And Location: A Sustainability Toolkit For Stakeholders In Development, Emer Byrne, Eamonn Donnelly
Conference papers
his paper reports a tool that ranks work place destinations in accordance with their sustainability based on their location’s capacity to minimise transport-generated carbon emissions within the Greater Dublin Area (GDA). To measure the transport-related CO2 emissions the following datasets were used: (i) Central Statistics Office (CSO) 2006 Place of Work Census of Anonymised Records (POWCAR) and (ii) CO2 emissions per mode of transport. These datasets were combined in a model with a 250 metre grid square coding of the GDA. The model calculations produced a carbon emissions value for every person travelling to work in each of the work …

Walkability Means What, To Whom?:Difficulties And Challenges In Defining Walkability, Lorraine Fitzsimons D'Arcy
Walkability Means What, To Whom?:Difficulties And Challenges In Defining Walkability, Lorraine Fitzsimons D'Arcy
Conference papers
There has been considerable growth in public health research investigating the influence of the built environment on physical activity. Simultaneously, transport and planning professionals have been promoting a change from inactive to active transport modes to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. A core concept in both areas of research is ‘walkability’. Walkable areas are varied and professional opinion on the level of walkability of an area can be contradictory. This study used a researcher-developed questionnaire to assess the environmental factors that influence walking behaviour. Professionals working within the areas of planning, architecture, politics, advocacy, public health and engineering were …

Ict Innovation Diffusion In Small Logistics Service Providers: An Empirical Survey, Pietro Evangelista, Edward Sweeney, Claudia-Maria Wagner
Ict Innovation Diffusion In Small Logistics Service Providers: An Empirical Survey, Pietro Evangelista, Edward Sweeney, Claudia-Maria Wagner
Conference papers
For companies competing in highly dynamic markets, innovation is considered a fundamental component of a successful business as it allows companies to sustain profit margins, sales growth and reduce competitors’ pressures. Information and communication technology (ICT) is essential innovation enablers especially in service companies. The focus of the paper is on the analysis of the role of ICT in innovation processes of small third-party logistics service providers (3PLs). On the basis of quantitative evidence emerging from a recent survey carried out on the Italian 3PL market, the paper analyses how ICT is used to support innovation and the factors the …

Implications Of Future Heavier Trucks For Europe's Bridges, Colin C. Caprani, Bernard Enright, Eugene O'Brien
Implications Of Future Heavier Trucks For Europe's Bridges, Colin C. Caprani, Bernard Enright, Eugene O'Brien
Conference papers
European road freight transport has increased by 38% between 1995 and 2005 and this strong growth trajectory seems likely to continue into the future. To address this growth without compromising the competitativeness of European transport, some countries are contemplating the introduction of longer and heavier trucks, with up to 8 axles and gross weights of up to 60 t. This has the advantage of reducing the number of vehicles for a given volume or mass of freights, reducing labour, fuel and other costs. However, many roads authorities are concerned about the implications for Europe's bridge infrastructure. For bridge loading, it …
Integrated Logistics And Supply Chain Management: The State Of Practice In Ireland, Austin Smyth, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney
Integrated Logistics And Supply Chain Management: The State Of Practice In Ireland, Austin Smyth, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney
Conference papers
The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland were provided with aid to offset locational disadvantages in the run up to the Single European Market. Since then the Republic has emerged as the fastest growing member of the E.U. Success has not been underpinned by the transport system, suggesting that business has had to overcome locational disadvantages by strong performance elsewhere in the supply chain. The evidence indicates that there are Irish firms operating supply chain management techniques at a truly international standard. The problem is that there are so few in that category Meeting Ireland’s competitiveness challenge means closing the …
