The ITB Journal
I am delighted to introduce the 16th edition of the ITB Journal, the academic journal of the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. The first paper ‘Be aware with a Honeypot’ by Meyer, Smyth, Cummins and Keane addresses the uncomfortable fact the Internet has become a hostile environment for computers, especially when they are directly connected with a public IP address. In their research, they created an ITB Honeypot that recorded over a thousand reconnaissance attacks seeking unauthorised entry onto the private network. They report on the nature of the intrusion scans and vulnerability attacks that were used and investigate the processes …
Factors Relating To The Design Of Effective Third Level Learning Environment, Amanda Clancy
Factors Relating To The Design Of Effective Third Level Learning Environment, Amanda Clancy
The ITB Journal
The number of students attending University in Ireland is at an all time high. Therefore it is essential to ensure that learning environments are well established and that they help deliver the most important aspects necessary to the students. This paper looks at what the most important factors are when it comes to learning and teaching environments, and what learning environment best delivers these factors. Three learning environments are discussed, Traditional Learning, Blended Learning and Distance Learning. The type of factors that are examined range from aspects to do with the material and resources available to the students to areas …
From Passivity To Interactivity: How The Traditional Lecture Has Evolved As A Method Of Instruction, Patricia Doherty
From Passivity To Interactivity: How The Traditional Lecture Has Evolved As A Method Of Instruction, Patricia Doherty
The ITB Journal
D’Inverno (2003:19) notes that “Most of the lectures which students attend require little engagement and they may well have developed a passive mentality in which some largely expect to switch off”. This paper reviews current thinking in this issue and present recent feedback from students in order to establish what can be done to improve the lecture as a method of instruction. We present a discussion that will help encourage a deeper sense of learning, make the lecture into something that students do not want to miss through promoting inclusiveness in learning, by making lectures more interactive and developing student …
Non-Offending Mothers Of Sexually Abused Children: The Hidden Victims, Seán Stitt
Non-Offending Mothers Of Sexually Abused Children: The Hidden Victims, Seán Stitt
The ITB Journal
This paper is an attempt to raise the awareness of health and social care professions (both in practice and in academia) of the absence of any substantial, targeted support, counselling or advocacy services for non-offending mothers of sexually abused children and of the almost complete lack of any meaningful social scientific academic discourse on the nature and extent of the unique problems faced by such mothers. What little specific research literature that does exist on this issue has been generated in the U.S. and any generalised European commentaries on child sexual abuse that exist actually focus upon: (a) the child …
Using Extended Analogy To Teach Fundamental Computing Concepts, Damian Gordon
Using Extended Analogy To Teach Fundamental Computing Concepts, Damian Gordon
The ITB Journal
Using analogies has long been used to help explain complex ideas in teaching. One of the most important ideas that a computing student must understand is the basic architecture of a digital computer. Since the late 1960s the standard teaching approach used to explain computer architecture is the Little Man Computer (LMC) Paradigm. This research seeks to expand upon this standard explanation through the use of a relatively recently developed technique called Extended Analogy. Extended analogy seeks to combine regular analogy with exaggeration or dramatic emphasis. In this case the LMC paradigm is extended by use of Samuel Beckett's play …

I am delighted to introduce the 15th edition of the ITB Journal, the academic journal of the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. The first paper included - Using Extended Analogy To Teach Fundamental Computing Concepts by Damian Gordon. Of the eLearning Research Group in the School of Computing, at DIT discusses the use of analogy to help explain complex ideas in teaching. Extended analogy seeks to combine regular analogy with exaggeration or dramatic emphasis. In this case the paradigm is extended by use of Samuel Beckett's play "Krapp's Last Tape" and took cognisance of learning styles and, in particular, a new …
Working Towards An Inclusive Model Of Practice: E4 Project Training In An Institute Of Technology, Dawn Duffin
Working Towards An Inclusive Model Of Practice: E4 Project Training In An Institute Of Technology, Dawn Duffin
The ITB Journal
The paper hypothesises that third level tutors are not required to and do not generally possess teaching or disability awareness qualifications and that the institute of technology involved would benefit from a collective approach towards more inclusive practice. The collected data confirms the hypothesis whilst also highlighting recommendations to be incorporated into future planning. The aim of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of a Continuing Professional Development Module on inclusive teaching and learning in a third level institute of technology; it is then intended to derive appropriate lessons for future development of such training. The E4 Project builds …
A Survey Of Procedural Techniques For City Generation, George Kelly, Hugh Mccabe
A Survey Of Procedural Techniques For City Generation, George Kelly, Hugh Mccabe
The ITB Journal
The computer game industry requires a skilled workforce and this combined with the complexity of modern games, means that production costs are extremely high. One of the most time consuming aspects is the creation of game geometry, the virtual world which the players inhabit. Procedural techniques have been used within computer graphics to create natural textures, simulate special effects and generate complex natural models including trees and waterfalls. It is these procedural techniques that we intend to harness to generate geometry and textures suitable for a game situated in an urban environment. Procedural techniques can provide many benefits for computer …

The Use Of Art Therapy Within Residential Care, Denise Lyons
The ITB Journal
Denise Lyons is a Social Care Lecturer in the Department of Humanities, Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown. Prior to becoming a lecturer, Denise worked with children in residential care, both as a social care worker, and later, as an art therapist. This paper describes the practice of providing art therapy as a support for one teenage boy, living within a residential group home. This paper begins with an introduction to the history of residential care, describing the role of art therapy as an intervention within a holistic approach to social care practice. This paper concludes with a case study, illustrating the …
The Conceptual Structure Of Negative Emotions Revealed By Shocking, Annoying, And Scary Examples Of Lexical Processing, Anne Herwig
The ITB Journal
Emotions can be viewed as abstract cognitive events without an external reference object. They are cognitive relations in the sense that they consist of two or more primarily autonomous events, which are set in relation to each other. Accordingly, their conceptual structure is relatively complex, and it can be of diverse nature. This is reflected in a broad variety of lexicalisation patterns, both within and across languages. The significance of emotions for human interaction and their complexity is reflected in the rich inventory of emotion terms in many cultures. Their processing in a second or foreign language requires conceptual restructuring, …
Gender And Mutation In Irish: A Preliminary Account For Further Investigation, Alessio S. Frenda
Gender And Mutation In Irish: A Preliminary Account For Further Investigation, Alessio S. Frenda
The ITB Journal
Standard Irish is the outcome of language planning and as such it significantly diverges from the three main spoken dialects of the language (or traditional Gaeltacht varieties) that provided the basis for its creation. It is also expected to differ, in its codified form, from the way it is actually employed within the small, usually urban communities of bilinguals who employ standard Irish and not some form of Gaeltacht Irish as a second language. The reason why such difference is expected is that the language planners codified as part of the standard many complex structures that had already been abandoned …

The ITB Journal
I am delighted to introduce the 14th edition of the ITB Journal, the academic journal of the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. The first paper in this journal from Alessio Frenda examines the complexities involved in the coding of grammatical gender within Irish and explores, in particular mutation, inflection and their consequences at the morphsyntactic interface across three macro-dialects (Ulster, Connacht, Munster), and standard Irish. In the second paper, Anne Herwig motivates a discussion on how emotions can be viewed as abstract cognitive events without an external reference object. Wityhin this view, they are cognitive relations in the sense that they …

Rapid-Prototyping Emulation System For Embedded System Hardware Verification, Using A Systemc Control System Environment And Reconfigurable Multimedia Hardware Development Platform, Dave Carroll, Richard Gallery
The ITB Journal
This paper describes research into the suitability of using SystemC for rapid prototyping of embedded systems. SystemC[1][2][3] communication interface protocols [4][5] are interfaced with a reconfigurable hardware system platform to provide a real-time emulation environment, allowing SystemC simulations to be directly translated into real-time solutions. The consequent Rapid Prototyping Emulation System Platform1, suitable for the implementation of consumer level multimedia systems, is described, including the system architecture, SystemC Controller model, the FPGA configured MicroBlaze CPU system and additional logic devices implemented on the Multimedia development board used for the hardware in the PESP, illustrated in the context of a typical …
Soc Test: Trends And Recent Standards, Michael Higgins, Ciaran Macnamee
Soc Test: Trends And Recent Standards, Michael Higgins, Ciaran Macnamee
The ITB Journal
The well-known approaching test cost crisis, where semiconductor test costs begin to approach or exceed manufacturing costs has led test engineers to apply new solutions to the problem of testing System-On-Chip (SoC) designs containing multiple IP (Intellectual Property) cores. While it is not yet possible to apply generic test architectures to an IP core within a SoC, the emergence of a number of similar approaches, and the release of new industry standards, such as IEEE 1500 and IEEE 1450.6, may begin to change this situation. This paper looks at these standards and at some techniques currently used by SoC test …

Review Of Assistive Devices For Electric Powered Wheelchairs Navigation, K. Arshak, D. Buckley, K. Kaneswaran
The ITB Journal
The decreasing costs of microprocessor systems and increasing range of “Smart Sensors” have led to a boom in Assistive Device Technology. The annual rate of expenditure for mobility related devices has reached $1 billion dollars in the United States alone. The industries current focus is to develop a wider range of Independent Mobility Controllers to allow, even the most severely disabled person, the ability to control an Electric Powered Wheelchair (EPW). Advances in Autonomous Robot Design have led to corresponding improvements in EPW technology. This paper outlines user interfaces and input device technologies used at present to navigate an EPW.

Analysis Of Response Of Flexible Pavements Using Finite Element Method, R.M. Mulungye, P.M.O Owende, K. Mellon
Analysis Of Response Of Flexible Pavements Using Finite Element Method, R.M. Mulungye, P.M.O Owende, K. Mellon
The ITB Journal
The characteristic response of flexible pavements under traffic load depict a delayed lateral strain relaxation (Viscoelasticity), a phenomenon that may be more accurately and expeditiously analysed using finite element (FE) viscoelastic response models. In this study a flexible pavement was modelled using ANSYS/ED finite element software suite. The pavement model was subjected to cyclic loading that simulated three levels of truck loads on 10R20 tyres at four tyre inflation pressures (viz. 350,490,630 and 770 kPa). The modelled results were in good agreement with the measured in-situ full-scale test data. Therefore, for known pavement material characteristics and tyre-pavement contact regime, finite …
In Italiano, As Gaeilge: A Matter Of Metaphorical Semantics, Alessio S. Frenda
In Italiano, As Gaeilge: A Matter Of Metaphorical Semantics, Alessio S. Frenda
The ITB Journal
In the present article the linguistic expression of MATTER will be considered with regards to (a) the prepositions involved and (b) the basic spatial meanings (BSMs) of such prepositions. The analysis will concentrate on Italian and Irish. The motivations for the choice of the preposition(s) will be sought after in the theoretical frame provided by Lakoff’s metaphorical semantics. In other words, we shall assume that the MATTER sense is a motivated extension of the spatial senses that primarily expressed by those prepositions. According to the abovementioned framework, a preposition is chosen to express MATTER when there is a metaphorically (i.e., …
Cross-Linguistic Comparisons: A Case Study Involving Irish And Italian Prepositions, Alessio S. Frenda
Cross-Linguistic Comparisons: A Case Study Involving Irish And Italian Prepositions, Alessio S. Frenda
The ITB Journal
Cross-linguistic comparison of unrelated or distantly related languages is often hindered by the lack of a one-to-one correspondence between the formal repertoires of the different languages. This article presents an example of such a situation, where the comparison of the Irish and Italian prepositional inventories is made impossible, on a formal basis, by the different sizes of the two sets of forms and the different semantic segmentation of the spatial-content continuum, i.e., the fact that one and the same form can express different concepts in a way that is cross-linguistically not always valid, and – conversely – that one and …
Reflexive And Reciprocal Constructions In Modern Greek, Evangelia Asproudi
Reflexive And Reciprocal Constructions In Modern Greek, Evangelia Asproudi
The ITB Journal
This paper examines the various constructions that convey reflexivity and reciprocity in Modern Greek. Modern Greek reflexive and reciprocal constructions are characterized by a considerable degree of overlap between them, in the sense that they are structurally parallel to each other. More concretely, both reflexives and reciprocals in the language can be lexicalized through the addition of the non-active suffix -mai to a transitive verb; moreover, reflexivity and reciprocity can be syntactically realized by means of an active transitive verb followed by a pronominal that is referentially bound to an antecedent. Lastly, pronoun incorporation to a –mai verb constitutes another …

Lexicon And Grammar, Dr. Anna Herwig
Lexicon And Grammar, Dr. Anna Herwig
The ITB Journal
Over the past decades it has become generally acknowledged that lexicon and grammar are inseparably linked, constituting “a continuum of symbolic structures“ (Langacker 1990:2). Yet, a comprehensive integration of the two realms of knowledge appears to be a difficult task. The present article offers a unified psycholinguistic perspective, which is centred on the mental lexicon, considering grammatical knowledge as part of the information structure of lexical items. It aims to model the complexity of lexical knowledge such that its perceived psychological reality, including various levels of linguistic description, becomes discernible.
