Aim: Deficiency of cobalamin and folate during pregnancy is associated with megaloblastic anemia. Lower levels of folate and vitamin B12 were reported in mothers whose offspring had neural tube defects compared to unaffected controls. Increased methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels are a sensitive indicator of mild vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels denote vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. The 3-dimensional alignment of the carpal bones should be intact to ensure functional integrity of the hand. The treatment of fractures of the carpal bones is challenging and may differ according to localization. A patient with closed carpal injury and his treatment are presented in this report. After his wrist was crushed between a smooth hammer and a workbench during an occupational accident, the patient had multiple carpal bone fractures and remarkable swelling. The presence of a supernumerary tooth in the nose is an unusual phenomenon and a rare form of ectopic tooth eruption in the maxillofacial region. In this case, the patient was referred to the hospital with the complaint of severe headache. In the endoscopic examination, the supernumerary tooth crown was not covered with mucosa or granulation tissue. In the present study, the clinical and radiological diagnosis of a supernumerary tooth located in the nose is reported.

Aims: Urological injuries that occur during hysterectomy are rare but important causes of morbidity. It was aimed to investigate in this case report whether there was any evidence to support malpractice in Court. Case Report: The patient was a woman in her 34^3 week of pregnancy with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and nephrotic syndrome with renal amyloidosis. Aim: To develop a sensitive automated colorimetric urine copper determination method using a water soluble compound, 2-(5-nitro-2-pyridylazo)-5-(N-propyl-N-sulfopropylamino) phenol (nitro-PAPS), as a ligand. Materials and Methods: The new photometric method using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-ascorbic acid to dissociate copper from proteins in acetate buffer (pH 3.2) and nitro-PAPS as ligand was also adapted to an automated analyzer. Inflammatory fibroid polyps are uncommon gastrointestinal tract lesions. The stomach and ileum are the most commonly affected sites. Clinical symptoms depend on the location and size of the lesion. Obstruction or intussusception is the most frequent initial symptom when an inflammatory fibroid polyp is located in the small intestine. We describe two cases of inflammatory fibroid polyps of the small intestine causing ileocecal and ileoileal intussusception.

Aim: The insertion of ventilation tubes at the time of cleft palate surgery is a controversial issue. We assessed the status of hearing and the middle ear in long-term follow-up after the treatment of cleft palate. Materials and Methods: 56 patients with cleft palate repair at the ages of 15 to 24 months were included in the study. Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disorder. The diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis requires the presence of two major or one major and two minor features. Pulmonary involvement has been reported to occur in less than 1% in patients and carries a poor prognosis. We present a female tuberous sclerosis patient with pulmonary involvement, evaluated for a positive PPD reaction.

A 49-year-old male, who had undergone mitral valve replacement with mechanical cardiac valve and coronary arterial by-pass grafting six years previously, was admitted to our hospital with acute dyspnea. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed that one of the leaflets of the prosthetic valve was entirely immobilized in the closed position, and an immobile soft tissue mass was detected on the ventricular side of the obstructed leaflet. We performed re-replacement using a 29-mm mechanical prosthetic St. Jude valve under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest via right atrial thoracotomy. Penile fractures are classically described as presenting with rapid detumescence of an erection associated with blunt trauma. This clinical finding is due to a tear in the tunica albuginea surrounding the corpora cavernosum. In this study, we report and discuss a case of trichotillomania and penile bending impulse resulting in penile fracture, which was operated in the urology clinic. The possible psychological and psychiatric problems underlying the impulsive behavior are discussed, and the value of a psychiatric evaluation is emphasized.

Background and Aim: Prenatal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities is usually performed on amniotic fluid samples. Aneuploidy screening by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), although not an alternative for conventional cytogenetics, has become a useful tool. Materials and Methods: We compared the results of FISH and conventional cytogenetic analysis applied on 51 amniotic fluid samples between January 2002 and December 2005, in our Cytogenetics Laboratory. Amniocytes were extracted using 5 cc of the sample, and direct FISH was applied using an AneuVysion Assay Kit (Vysis). Metformin is an oral hypoglycemic agent that is commonly used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. While metformin-associated metabolic acidosis is a widely recognized side effect of this drug, metformin-induced hepatotoxicity has been rarely reported in the literature. Schwannoma of the cervical sympathetic chain is a rare nerve tumor. These lesions typically present as an asymptomatic neck mass and are easily mistaken for a carotid body tumor during the initial work-up. In this report, a rarely seen huge cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma case, who experienced partial Horner´s syndrome postoperatively, is presented. We report a case of schwannoma on the cervical sympathetic chain, which to our knowledge is the largest reported in the current literature.

Chondroblastic osteosarcoma (COS), a subgroup of intramedullary osteosarcoma, is usually located in the knee region of the body. It is most common in adolescents and early adulthood. Aim: The precise pathogenetic mechanisms causing thrombotic complications in Behçet´s disease (BD) are still not known. To explain the pathogenesis with coagulation induction or a defective fibrinolysis superimposed on endothelial dysfunction, various hemostatic parameters were studied. Thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI), downregulating plasmin generation and fibrinolysis, is a novel risk factor for thrombotic disorders. We studied plasma TAFI levels in BD in comparison with healthy controls. Aim: There is a variation in drug response among individuals. In this study, we determined angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D), beta2-adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) Arg16Gly and dopamine D1 receptor (DRD1) -48 G/A polymorphisms, which are presumed to be related to the transient hypertension induced by the mechanical stimulation of laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation/extubation.
