The Intersectionality Of Trauma And The Master Status Of Urban School Students With Incarcerated Parents: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Latoya L. Medley

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this study was to explore the intersectionality framework in place in schools and to examine school-based responses to the trauma students may face when they have incarcerated parents. Intersectionality theory emphasizes the interconnected nature of various social identities, such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and more. Applying intersectionality theory to the context of students with incarcerated parents enhanced our understanding of the challenges they face. This qualitative study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to examine how five urban school administrators handled the effects of trauma in students with incarcerated parents.

The findings from the interviews highlight the critical …

Can Government Inaction Result In Rising Gift Tax Revenue?, Hugh H. Lambert Jan 2024

Can Government Inaction Result In Rising Gift Tax Revenue?, Hugh H. Lambert

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

James Alm noted in 1988 that tax uncertainty is particularly problematic for taxpayers, and he identified two risk areas that can cause changes in taxpayer behavior: variations to the tax base (tax base risk) and modifications to the tax rates (tax rate risk).1 This report studies how estate and gift tax laws passed with sunset provisions created taxpayer uncertainty in 2010 and 2012, and how that uncertainty led to increased gifting activity by wealthy taxpayers, which in turn increased the amount of gift tax revenue collected by the federal government in 2011 and 2013. The sunsetting of a tax law …

Hypothermia Versus Normothermia As Intervention To Reduce Mortality Rates Following Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Cora Blunden

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

Abstract

Background: Cardiac arrest contributes to 300,000 to 450,000 deaths in the United States every year. Individuals who survive cardiac arrest often still die after resuscitation. Induced hypothermia is often an intervention used for individuals after being resuscitated after a cardiac arrest and has become standard practice for several institutions. There is significant motivation to see if induced hypothermic states promote improved mortality rates for patients who experience cardiac arrests.

Objective: The purpose of this paper is to determine the effectiveness of induced hypothermia versus normothermia on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest mortality rates. Methods: A review of recent literature in the …

An Overview And Analysis Of The Wire’S First Season, Jack Gullo Jan 2024

An Overview And Analysis Of The Wire’S First Season, Jack Gullo

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the Fall of 2023, I had the great pleasure of studying the first season of an HBO drama from the 2000s called The Wire. In this paper, I analyze how creator David Simons made relevant cultural commentary about American capitalism and its effects on the citizens of our cities, specifically Baltimore. Simon derives his knowledge of Baltimore from his years spent as a crime reporter at The Baltimore Sun, which had a profound influence on the realism displayed in the show. This first season of The Wire proves to be sophisticatedly complex, stepping away from traditional cop shows at …

The Factors Causing High Food Insecurity Rates In U.S. Undergraduate Students, Natalie S. Byrd

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

The cliché of a college student surviving off ramen noodles sheds light on a deeper issue — high rates of food insecurity among undergraduate college/university students in the United States. There have been countless studies in recent years exploring the hidden causes of why an estimated 40% of students experience food insecurity as of 2022. These studies conclude three main reoccurring factors causing these high rates: costs, accessibility, and demographic characteristics. Food insecurity rates are important for higher education officials to address due to the countless physical and mental health, academic, and equity implications for the students.

Doulas In Modern Health Care, Gabriella J. Lawrence Jan 2024

Doulas In Modern Health Care, Gabriella J. Lawrence

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper looks into whether the implementation of doulas by all hospitals would benefit mothers before, during, and after childbirth. Through previous research it is shown how traumatizing birth can be for mothers who don't feel that they have control within the labor and delivery room. High rates of augmentation, epidural anesthesia, and cesarean sections within hospitals are all causes of postpartum anxiety and depression among new mothers. By researching who a doula is and what they can do for mothers during childbirth, we can get a better understanding on how to prevent mental health disorders that are caused by …

The “Valley Of Opportunity”: Morality In A Shoe Empire, Nick Bricker

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

George F. Johnson followed in his father’s footsteps as a factory worker in the 1800s. While learning all of the different processes that went into making good quality shoes, he realized the importance of having a dedicated workforce that was behind the scenes, ensuring even the most obscure details were attended to. Through hard work, Johnson rose through the ranks of a shoe manufacturing company and eventually became part of the executive leadership team. However, unlike most who rose to this position, he did not forget where he came from and how much hard work it took to produce these …

Abstract

On October 3rd, 2023, Rep. Kevin McCarthy became the first Speaker of the House of Representatives to be forcibly removed from his position as Speaker of the lower chamber of Congress. Though dramatic, this episode is indicative of the current state of American politics. At a time when political polarization between the two parties has never been higher, norms that were once considered the nuclear option are now understood as the norm. Cynicism and distrust of Congress is at an all-time high, with many Americans disabused …

Money Doesn’T Grow On Trees: How Financial Literacy Is Learned And Developed Within American Childhood, Nate Lewis Jan 2024

Money Doesn’T Grow On Trees: How Financial Literacy Is Learned And Developed Within American Childhood, Nate Lewis

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

Financial literacy refers to the ability to process and utilize economic information to make informed decisions for their wellbeing. Given concerning indicators of financial outcomes within the United States, it is crucial to understand how and when strong financial behavior is developed. Efforts to enhance financial education have explored incorporating financial concepts into children’s literature and games. Yet, research indicates that financial literacy is far more rooted in the habits learned from one’s family, despite the emphasis often placed on schooling and socioeconomic status. It is therefore evident that efforts to promote financial literacy must always involve empowering family members …

Education Doctoral

This qualitative phenomenological exploratory case study explored Afro Flow Yoga to evaluate its potential as a culturally adaptable mindfulness-based intervention for enhancing the health and well-being of Black women while addressing the historical ills and adverse effects of intersectionality. From its beginning, the United States has discriminated against and defeminized Black women while profiting from all aspects of their lives. To be Black and female in America is to experience perpetual racism, sexism, and other "isms" as forms of harm and oppression. Therefore, culturally adapted mindfulness interventions are essential to cater to the unique needs of Black women. The mindfulness …
