Emisja Zanieczyszczeń Ze Spalania Odpadów Ściekowych W Piecu Półkowym, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki

Robert Oleniacz

The article presents incineration tests of silty-tar sludge produced in the wastewater treatment plant for coke industry. Sewage sludges were incinerated in a full-scale multiple hearth incinerator equipped with a wet flue-gas cleaning system (alkaline scrubber). Measurements of air pollutant emissions were carried out both before and after the cleaning system. The obtained results allow to conclude that the thermal utilization of sewage sludge in this type of installation might be just a little cumbersome for the environment, using the appropriate equipment for the purification of exhaust gases. The paper also specifies minimum exhaust gas cleaning performance that guarantees compliance …

Wdrażanie Monitoringu Zanieczyszczeń Powietrza Atmosferycznego W Kielcach, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki

Robert Oleniacz

Assumptions for regional environmental monitoring in the province of Kielce were developed as early as 1992. Since the beginning of particular attention were monitoring the air. The article presents the next step in the implementation of this monitoring, associated with verification of the location and the measuring range of points to measure the concentrations of air pollutants in Kielce. As a result of analysis and calculations, it was found that the original location is not always correct and does not reflect the spatial differentiation of pollutant concentrations. The proposed changes in the position of monitoring points or measurement methods were …

Assessment of the state of air pollution in the urban area is a difficult and complex task. Depending on the method of assessment the procedure requires a comprehensive research and calculations of air emissions from all sources occurring in the area and the use of atmospheric dispersion models or large-scale implementation of direct measurements of air pollutant concentrations. Both of these methods may also be applied simultaneously to their mutual verification.

The article presents the results of such a comprehensive assessment of air pollution on the example of the city of Nowy Sacz (Poland). This involved determining the emissions of …

The negative effects of the refining industry for ambient air quality is mainly related to emissions of hydrocarbon vapors. Calculation methodology and estimates, the level of emissions from several years has been the research subject of many institutions and environmental agencies, including The Oil Companies’ European association for health, safety and environment in refining and distribution (CONCAWE) and American Petroleum Institute (API).

The article describes the main sources of emissions of hydrocarbons occurring in a typical refinery. In summary form also shows how to calculate the volume of a mixture of hydrocarbons emissions from these sources based on empirically validated …

The Theme Of "Relevance" In Third World Human Sciences, Syed Farid Alatas Dec 1996

The Theme Of "Relevance" In Third World Human Sciences, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

The fact that the humanities and social sciences in developing societies generally originated in the West has raised the issue of the relevance of these arts and sciences to the needs and problems of Third World societies. This questioning of relevance has led, in turn, to the call for the indigenisation of knowledge in developing societies. While there has been a great deal of discussion on indigenisation, there has been little practice of indigenised humanities and social science. As a result, there are few examples of what indigenous knowledge constitutes from theoretical, methodological and empirical points of view. This paper …

Training Examiners For A National Epidemiological Survey Of Oral Mucosal Lesions, Rosnah Binti Zain, Razak I. A., Ikeda N., Axéll T., Downer M. C.

Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Zain

Ensuring the validity and reliability of data collected in epidemiological surveys is an important consideration. The purpose of the present report is to describe a training and calibration programme for 16 examiners taking part in a national survey of oral mucosal lesions and to present an evaluation of the results. The programme included the distribution of a pictorial manual to participants and a series of lectures followed by three diagnostic sessions, two using slides and the last involving patients. At the final session, the trainees classified 88 per cent of 16 patients correctly in comparison with the definitive diagnoses of …

Law Versus Justice?, Shulamit Almog Dec 1996

Law Versus Justice?, Shulamit Almog

Shulamit Almog

On 12 September 1996, the Supreme Court of Israel delivered judgment in the Further hearing of the petition filed by Ruthi Nachmani against her husband Daniel Nachmani. The Nachmani judgment furnished a remarkable example of the subjectivity which underlies the perception of justice. This essay provides a fascinating record of how judges approaching the same issues from different perspectives, reach opposite legal conclusions.

The paper describes the problem of the presence of sulfur in the blast furnace process and identifies emission sources of sulfur compounds in this process. On the basis of the measurements and calculations, the types and quantities of these compounds emitted to the air were determined. It was found that pig iron smelting in a blast furnace causes emissions of COS, SO2 and H2S. These emissions occur by losses of blast furnace gas (COS and SO2), transport of blast furnace slag inside the furnace hall (SO2) and treatment of the slag by granulation (H2S). However, the most important are only …

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents the impact of alkali metals on sintering and blast furnace processes and air pollutant emissions including particulate matter. On the basis of the balance calculations, it was found that the main source of alkali (Na2O and K2O) in the sintering process is a raw mixture unweathered. The calculations showed that the level of dust emissions from the sinter strand to a large extent depends on: the total alkali content in a mixture of sinter, ash content in coke breeze, K2O concentration in coke ash and alkalinity of the produced sinter. Alkali metals are introduced into the blast …

"Sir, I have the keys of the shop I .....ork in. Please let me ring up the owner and inform him that he should take the keys from here:' But Narender's repeated plea fell on deaf ears of the policemen in the Civil Lines Police Station. Instead of allowing him his right to contact a friend/relative, so boldly painted in every police station, the police personnel simply denied Narender possessed anything but a 10" knife. The "right" which Narender was denied are painted in white over blue in every Police Station. Now Aren't blue and white both very passive colours? …

Stigma And Self-Fulfilling Expectations Of Criminality, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Oct 1996

Stigma And Self-Fulfilling Expectations Of Criminality, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

In modelling crime, economists have focussed on the expected cost of government sanctions to the criminal, but private sanctions--- notably economic or social stigma--- may be just as important. In the model here, workers decide whether to commit crimes and employers decide how much to pay ex- convicts. In one equilibrium, individuals refrain from crime and economic stigma--- the wage loss from conviction--- is high. In a second, pareto- inferior equilibrium, individuals commit crimes and stigma is low, because employers realize that nonconviction does not imply noncriminality. The model may help to explain large shifts in crime, such as that …

Ciudad Y Comunicacián, Fernando Carrión Mena Oct 1996

Ciudad Y Comunicacián, Fernando Carrión Mena

Fernando Carrión Mena

The text deals with analyzing the theme about the relation between communication and city, in a double perspective: the city a mean of communication and the incorporation of the communicative dimension in urban policies. 80th perspectives have more sense, when the globalization procedures require the intemationalization of the city, a fortifying local government and the return to the constructed city, therefore, in a wide meaning; the communication acquires a new dimension for the urban development.

"Ni el patrimonio económico y cultural heredado del pasado, ni la importancia política y los medios financieros que el Estado atribuya a sus ciudades serán …

The article presents the concept of system of monitoring of air pollution around the Power Plant "Jaworzno III" in Jaworzno (Poland), whose objective is to evaluate the impact of this object on air quality. This system is based on a few measuring points and a mobile station should also allow for the assessment of ecological effects associated with the use of low-emission burners in power boilers (reduction of NOx emission) and run the wet installation of flue gas desulfurization (reduction of SO2 emission). An additional aim of the measurements is to identify the possible effects of a changes in the …

The recent rulinq of the Supreme Court on the bail release of under-trial prisoners is momentous. Its importance lies in the fact, that the judgement confers on an under-trial prisoner booked for certain category of offences a right to be released on bail if he has undergone a certain period of pre-trial detention. Another highlight of the judgement apart from this is that it enjoins upon the trial court to take suo moto cognizance of the pending of trial and under-trial detention. And the order would apply to all future cases. Further, the jUdgement itself provides for its circulation in …

The study of snow hydrological characteristics plays the major part in forecast of snow-melt, snow run-off water of rivers, potential release of snow avalan'che and climatic changes. Increasing importance of study of snow hydrology has lead to the development of many snow sensors which monitors physical parameter of snow. Design of such snow sensors has been a difficult job because of harsh environmental conditions. This paper present the design considerations and performance characteristics of snowpack temperature profile sensing probe. This probe provides temperature gradient and temperature distributions within the snow-pack, and ground at different depths. The information on temperature distribution …
