An Empirical Study Of The Use Of Mixed Methods In Doctor Of Business Administration (Dba) Curriculum Within An Australian University, Roslyn Cameron, Peter Miller Dec 2009

An Empirical Study Of The Use Of Mixed Methods In Doctor Of Business Administration (Dba) Curriculum Within An Australian University, Roslyn Cameron, Peter Miller

Peter Miller

Business disciplines have traditionally been undertaken within the quantitative paradigm however, mixed methods approaches have recently been introduced and utilised within applied business research. The purpose of this paper is to map the experience of introducing the teaching of mixed research methods in an international Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) curriculum within an Australian University. This paper begins with a professional reflective piece on the experience of introducing the teaching of mixed methods. This is followed by a brief overview of the literature on mixed methods as a third methodological movement. The paper will then present empirical data into the …

Determination Of Starting Sentences In Israel—System And Application, Oren Gazal-Ayal, Ruth Kannai Dec 2009

Determination Of Starting Sentences In Israel—System And Application, Oren Gazal-Ayal, Ruth Kannai

Oren Gazal-Ayal

The Israeli Penal Law Bill (Amendment No. 92, Structuring Judicial Discretion in Sentencing) 5766-2006 proposes that a committee be set up to establish sentences that will serve as starting points for judges in their sentencing deliberation (starting sentences). The Israeli Minister of Justice asked the authors to propose starting sentences for three prevalent serious offences in order to show the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) the methodology of determining such starting sentences and to help facilitate the debate about the consequences of these new guidelines. The ministers intended the Knesset to legislate these proposed starting sentences in the appendix to the …

When The Veil And The Vote Collide: Enhancing Muslim Women’S Rights Through Electoral Reform, Amber R. Maltbie Dec 2009

When The Veil And The Vote Collide: Enhancing Muslim Women’S Rights Through Electoral Reform, Amber R. Maltbie

Amber R Maltbie

Voter identification laws serve a critical purpose in the consolidation of emerging democracies and post-conflict situations. By serving as a prophylactic curb against voter fraud when trust in the electoral process is low, voter identification laws strengthen the public’s perception of an election’s integrity and the legitimacy of the government elected. However, even when administered absent any discriminatory intent, these laws can have unintended consequences, especially for Muslim women who wear a veil that covers the face. For new democracies or post-conflict states with large or majority Muslim populations, voter turnout among women can be suppressed if the jurisdiction’s electoral …

Poly(Beta-Alanoid-Block-Beta-Alanine)S: Synthesis Via Cobalt-Catalyzed Carbonylative Polymerization And Self-Assembly, Shaohui Lin, Xinfei Yu, Yinfeng Tu, Hongyu Xu, Stephen Z. D. Cheng, Li Jia Dec 2009

Poly(Beta-Alanoid-Block-Beta-Alanine)S: Synthesis Via Cobalt-Catalyzed Carbonylative Polymerization And Self-Assembly, Shaohui Lin, Xinfei Yu, Yinfeng Tu, Hongyu Xu, Stephen Z. D. Cheng, Li Jia

The titled diblock copolymers are synthesized via cobalt-catalyzed living carbonylative polymerization of N-alkylaziridines under moderate pressures followed by a deprotection step. The poly(beta-alanine) block is solubilized by the poly(beta-alanoid) block in chloroform and remains fully hydrogen-bonded in the form of a sheet-like assembly.

Popularizing Achievement: The Role Of An Hbcu In Supporting Academic Success For Underprepared Black Males, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Dina C. Maramba, Phd Dec 2009

Popularizing Achievement: The Role Of An Hbcu In Supporting Academic Success For Underprepared Black Males, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Dina C. Maramba, Phd

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Both predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are experiencing low academic persistence rates among Black males. While researchers have focused on factors facilitating the retention and persistence for Black males at PWIs, a paucity of contemporary research has focused on the academic and social experiences of Black males at HBCUs. We used in-depth interview methods to investigate the academic and social experiences of 11 Black males, who entered a public HBCU through its remedial or developmental studies program and persisted to graduation. Although several themes emerged from this study, special attention was placed on the …

From Artifacts To Aggregations: Modeling Scientific Life Cycles On The Semantic Web, Alberto Pepe, Matthew Mayernik, Christine Borgman, Herbert Van De Sompel Jul 2009

From Artifacts To Aggregations: Modeling Scientific Life Cycles On The Semantic Web, Alberto Pepe, Matthew Mayernik, Christine Borgman, Herbert Van De Sompel

Alberto Pepe

In the process of scientific research, many information objects are generated, all of which may remain valuable indefinitely. However, artifacts such as instrument data and associated calibration information may have little value in isolation; their meaning is derived from their relationships to each other. Individual artifacts are best represented as components of a life cycle that is specific to a scientific research domain or project. Current cataloging practices do not describe objects at a sufficient level of granularity nor do they offer the globally persistent identifiers necessary to discover and manage scholarly products with World Wide Web standards. The Open …
