Despite the notion that First Amendment rights are established, valued, and respected in the United States, there continues to be confusion in public schools that leads to legal conflict over issues associated with freedoms of speech and expression, especially as they relate to religious issues. Navigating the religious rights of teachers and students can be a precarious undertaking, as administrators’ decisions regarding the expression of religious beliefs continue to be highlighted in the media and many times are resolved in the court system at great expense to school districts. The paper describes the history of the public library in Santa Barbara from 1870 to 1926 while taking into account two of the thematic underpinnings of the American library tradition: women in the profession and the importance of books and libraries in the community. It is divided into three sections including, the importance of books and libraries, women librarianship, and the history of the Santa Barbara Public Library. The library’s ideology and history espouses the themes inherent in American library history. This article examines the predicaments and paradoxes of identity politics
in Cyprus. It looks at the historical alliance of colonial practices and
nationalist rationales that brought about a static bicommunal system,
establishing the basis for inter-ethnic conflict, or what became known as
the ‘Cyprus problem’. The advent of modern governmentality, dividing
and classifying the Cypriot population, helped, in addition, to solidify
fluid and ambiguous ethno-religious boundaries, making it more difficult
for individuals to use ethno-religious identities flexibly and pragmatically,
including their use as a tactic to resist the policies of consecutive
