The Preaching Of Non-Sentient Beings, Charles Chaim Wax Jan 1983

The Preaching Of Non-Sentient Beings, Charles Chaim Wax

Theses

In this Thesis Report I have attempted to document the process whereby my photographic concerns shifted from images of urban life to images of the natural world, and from the use of the 35mm and 2\ format to the 8x10 format. I discuss the development of my Thesis Proposal. It began when I heard a Teisho (talk) by Eido Roshi on "the preaching of non-sentient beings." I then show how my residence at Dai Bosatsu Zen Monastery influenced the direction of my Thesis work. In this Thesis Report I also discuss in some detail my experience of the two aspects …

A Comparative Study Of Concurrency Control Algorithms For Distributed Databases, Fabio Aparicio Jan 1983

A Comparative Study Of Concurrency Control Algorithms For Distributed Databases, Fabio Aparicio

Theses

The declining cost of computer hardware and the increasing data processing needs of geographically dispersed organizations have led to substantial interest in distributed data management. These characteristics have led to reconsider the design of centralized databases. Distributed databases have appeared as a result of those considerations. A number of advantages result from having duplicate copies of data in a distributed databases. Some of these advantages are: increased data accesibility, more responsive data access, higher reliability, and load sharing. These and other benefits must be balanced against the additional cost and complexity introduced in doing so. This thesis considers the problem …

Cast: A System For Color Animation And Scene Transformation, Frederick Schebor Jan 1983

Cast: A System For Color Animation And Scene Transformation, Frederick Schebor

Theses

CAST is an acronym for Color Animation and Scene Transformation. The objective of this system is to give non-computing personnel the ability to create still and animated pictures with the aid of a digital computer. Data generation and animation language are two key components that comprise an animation system. The CAST system incorporates an interactive dialogue to assist the user in generating and/or editing three dimensional scenes, and an animation language which uses a simple script like syntax to describe parallel motion. The third key component of an animation system is the display. The CAST system incorporates hidden surface elimination …

Parsing Natural Language, Leonard E. Wilcox Jan 1983

Parsing Natural Language, Leonard E. Wilcox

Theses

People have long been intrigued by the possibility of using a computer to "understand" natural language. Most researchers attempting to solve this problem have begun their efforts by trying to have the computer recognize the underlying syntactic form (the parse tree) of the sentence. This thesis presents an overview of the history of syntactic parsing of natural language, and it compares the major methods that have been used. Linguistically, two recent grammars are described: transformational grammar and systemic grammar. Computationally, three parsing strategies are described and compared: top-down parsing, bottom-up parsing, and a combination of both of these methods. Several …

Investigation Of The Radiometric Integrity Of The Theogram After Its Raster Scan Lines Are Removed Through Spatial Filtration, Joan Allamena Jan 1983

Investigation Of The Radiometric Integrity Of The Theogram After Its Raster Scan Lines Are Removed Through Spatial Filtration, Joan Allamena

Theses

Thermograms are records of density levels which correspond to apparent temperatures. The process of thermographic imaging is based on Plank's law which relates temperature to radiance. It begins with the collection of quantum energy which is then converted to voltage. The voltage powers a light source to expose the recording material of the thermogram. Atmospheric effects must also be taken into consideration. The relationship which takes all variables into account can be found in appendix A.

An Implementation Of Four Of Ledgard's Mini-Languages, Piyanai Saowarattitada Jan 1983

An Implementation Of Four Of Ledgard's Mini-Languages, Piyanai Saowarattitada

Theses

For decades humans have been searching for the test way to communicate with an intelligent machine, a computer. Several programming languages have been written with the idea of a universal language have been written with the idea of a universal language which includes solutions to solve as many problems as one can think of. Put the more universal the languages are the more complex they are to study. Henery Ledgard tried to combine these two ideas together. He suggests the idea of studying programming language by dealing with a few key features at a time. He separated the various programming …

A Study Of Comparable Identifiably Predictions Of Some Resolving Power Targets By Fourier Spectra Considerations, James Greene Jan 1983

A Study Of Comparable Identifiably Predictions Of Some Resolving Power Targets By Fourier Spectra Considerations, James Greene

Theses

This report documents a study conducted to examine the correlation between identification thresholds and difference spectra of some resolving power target characters. The experiment included the USAF Tri-bar target, the RIT Alpha-numeric Resolving Power Target, and a set of targets called the Granger Modified Tri-bar targets. Assuming that target identification is a filtering process and primarily a function of its frequency spectrum, this study began with a prediction of targets that would have equal identification thresholds from difference spectra considerations. Target images were viewed at various sizes to confirm/refute the original hypothesis. The USAF targets demonstrated adequate control of experimental …

A Resource System Package For Reservation Systems, Gary Foley Jan 1983

A Resource System Package For Reservation Systems, Gary Foley

Theses

The Resource System Package is a software tool developed to aid in the design and use of reservation system databases. The package is designed to automate the creation of a reservation database for arbitrary objects and to facilitate ease of maintenance and updating of existing databases. Databases set up via the resource system are maintained through the Mistress Relational Database System, although no specific knowledge of Mistress is required of either the database designer or the users of the database. The package is menu-driven for ease of use. This package consists of two separate programs, a Resource System program and …
