The New Slavery, Or Chrysalization Of Class, Alexander M. Sidorkin

This paper shows that emergence of modern childhood can be explained by a need to secure unpaid labor of school-aged children by means of extra-economic coercion. The pre-modern Europe needed to compel a growing segment of population to participate in unpaid work of schooling. The task was accomplished by creating a group with limited rights, and by convincing everyone that the labor of schooling is actually a kind of service provided to children. Ultimately, the modern conception of childhood was born of power relations formed by economic necessity. To support the claim, I rely mainly on Philippe Aries's account. Michel …

Statelessness And Roma Communities In The Czech Republic: Competing Theories Of State Compliance, Robyn Linde

This paper examines the Czech Republic’s passage in 1993 of a citizenship law that rendered approximately 10,000 to 25,000 members of the Roma community stateless. The Czech Republic, a former satellite state of the Soviet Union, peacefully split from the Slovak Republic with the dissolution of the Czechoslovak Federal Republic (hereafter Czechoslovakia) in 1993, a process known as the Velvet Divorce. Following the dissolution, a new citizenship law came into effect that put steep requirements on individuals who wished to gain or retain Czech citizenship. These requirements included verification of a five-year period of residence, a clean criminal record, and …

Contextualizes Spanish surrealist filmmaker, Luis Bunuel's, 1933 surrealist documentary, Land without Bread, in its artistic, historical, and political foundations. Creates the first English language exploration of the term, "surrealist documentary," that is equally contextualized between the politics and methods of the surrealists and the beginnings of the ethnographic film tradition.

Examines reforms in the Ottoman Empire during the Tanzimat, 1839-1876, when the traditional system of government and politics was modified to reflect the challenges facing the Ottoman Empire from the expanding power and presence of European nations who were rapidly emerging as the most powerful nations in the world. Evaluates the different ideologies which emerged during the Tanzimat in terms of their content, which reflects a spectrum of influences ranging from the traditional Islamic framework of government and politics to that of 19th century Western assumptions and practices of government and politics. Consists of a suite of computer programs written in Visual Basic.net and embedded Visual Basic 3.0, whose purpose is to display the RIC course catalog on a Pocket PC device running Windows Mobile. The program package allows major course requirements and information to be viewed on a single screen. Included is a desktop computer program which allows faculty and staff to make changes to the database of courses.
