A Spiritual Direction Approach Aimed At Creating Belonging On Campus, Michael Dante
A Spiritual Direction Approach Aimed At Creating Belonging On Campus, Michael Dante
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Abstract:
Creating a campus culture of belonging is mission critical for Jesuit institutions. This is even more heightened with the recent Supreme Court decision eliminating Affirmative Action and numerous states banning the teaching of history especially around race. To overcome these setbacks and the larger negative effects of racism and white privilege, many of our schools offer trainings, book discussions, and dialogues. These have been very helpful.
Yet, another untapped dimension to racism and white privilege occurs at a spiritual level. Mission Officers, DEI Officers, Rectors of Jesuit communities, and spiritual directors can collaborate to engage this level of the …
Using A Historical Approach To Teach Social Justice: A Classroom Model, Mary L. Troy, Timothy Powers, Emily Lee Chong
Using A Historical Approach To Teach Social Justice: A Classroom Model, Mary L. Troy, Timothy Powers, Emily Lee Chong
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Social Justice epitomizes the Ignatian ideal of “men and women for others”. Utilizing Ignatian pedagogy, faculty at Jesuit colleges and universities can help students explore and understand the link between historical events and current social justice issues. This article demonstrates and applies a six-step model of utilizing history as a tool for social justice. The model can be adapted for any field of study at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Synod And The Arts Inspire Hope And Imagination, Becky Mcintyre, Beth Ford Mcnamee Ed.D., Maureen O'Connell
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
The process of journeying together, spiritual listening, discerning communally, and incorporating community art has kindled hope and imagination for Philadelphia-area university students during the ongoing, three-year global Synod on “Communion, Participation and Mission,” which Pope Francis convened in October of 2021. The SCHEAP leadership team desires to share what we have learned through our hope-filled and creative synodal process so that others may cultivate the protagonism of college students in imagining the future of the Church through synodal practices of spiritual listening, relationship-building, and creative communal discernment.
La Universidad De La Compañía Como Instrumento De Misericordia, J. Matthew Ashley
La Universidad De La Compañía Como Instrumento De Misericordia, J. Matthew Ashley
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Jesuit Pedagogy's 'Missing Link', Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano
Jesuit Pedagogy's 'Missing Link', Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Jesuit pedagogy has undergone a major renewal in the last fifty years. In this process, various inspirational formulations of its educational vision have been chosen. Despite maintaining a common language and spirituality, we have identified the risk that it is only lived out by a minority of people in Jesuit educational institutions. This paper proposes a re-reading of the Ratio Studiorum (RS) that offers a more precise and complete understanding of Jesuit pedagogy. This leads us to conclude that, in addition to other well-known features, it must involve the institutional governance model, a focus on an educative community that learns …
¿Qué Hace Un Líder Ignaciano? Reflexiones En Las Prácticas Y Sabiduría Jesuita, Michelle Wheatley
¿Qué Hace Un Líder Ignaciano? Reflexiones En Las Prácticas Y Sabiduría Jesuita, Michelle Wheatley
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Integrity In Three Keys: A Catholic Approach To Integrity In Higher Education, Jacob Riyeff
Integrity In Three Keys: A Catholic Approach To Integrity In Higher Education, Jacob Riyeff
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Academic Integrity offices in higher education are often seen as the "plagiarism police." While this perception reflects the disciplinary role of such offices, the area of academic integrity also allows for broad and incisive consideration of the nature of institutions of higher education and moral aspects of the work students perform at these institutions. In this reflection I track—in my role as Academic Integrity Director at a Jesuit university—my own meditations on and struggles with understanding and articulating the role of Academic Integrity offices in higher education. In the midst of sometimes distressing circumstances, I discern pathways to hope, which …

Ignatian Values And International Conference On Disability, Enaya Hammad Othman
Ignatian Values And International Conference On Disability, Enaya Hammad Othman
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This essay focuses on the values of Ignatius Loyola (1491–1556) concerning the issues related to disability and how the mission of the “Conference on Disability at the Intersection of History, Culture, Religion, Gender, and Health” hosted by Marquette University embodies those values. This conference, which was first held in 2022 and planned to take place in 2025 again, serves several goals shared by Jesuit education, Catholic values and Ignatius’ philosophy. It aspires to contribute to social justice, deep thinking and reflection, and meaningful change in society. Above all, the conference is motivated by ‘service’ to humanity and thus to the …
Can Biology Define A Human Life?, Katelyn De Leon
Can Biology Define A Human Life?, Katelyn De Leon
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
I grew up contemplating the concept of life. From my Catholic grandmother to my pediatrician mother, I always received mixed perspectives on the hot topics of abortions, vaccines, and embryo use. I found that the controversy lies in an ambiguous, mixed understanding of what constitutes a human life. From biochemical approaches to extraterrestrial life forms and spirituality there is no clear, coherent all-encompassing definition of life. However, that does not mean we can merely agree to disagree. The concept of a human life has drastic implications on our everyday lives. An insufficient definition has, and will continue to, diminish quality …
A Conservation Model: Costa Rican Conservation Strategies Effectively Preserve Their Threatened Primates, Ryan Belmont
A Conservation Model: Costa Rican Conservation Strategies Effectively Preserve Their Threatened Primates, Ryan Belmont
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The wildlife of Costa Rica has experienced various anthropogenic threats over the last century including climate change and agricultural expansion. The mantled howler monkey (Alloutta palliata), Central American spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), white-faced capuchin (Cebus imitator), and the Central American squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii) are Costa Rica’s native primates that face several anthropogenic threats such as deforestation for agriculture and climate change. In response to increased threats to its four native species of non-human primates, Costa Rica has implemented effective governmental conservation tactics such as the Payments for Environmental Services program, ecotourism …
Early Attachment And Trauma In Human And Non-Human Primates, Mary Roe
Early Attachment And Trauma In Human And Non-Human Primates, Mary Roe
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The importance of social relationships for our survival and optimal development has been emphasized repeatedly in scientific literature. Research suggests that a child’s initial relationships with their caregivers establishes their attachments and eventually mediates the child’s sense of security in the world. If the child is adequately cared for, they will form a secure base to experience the world from. In this thesis, I explore research on attachments and parental deprivation in non-human primates. I contribute my own data on the maternal behaviors of Costa Rican mantled howler monkeys to reinforce the non-human primate literature. I then synthesize these findings …

The Study Abroad Effect: A Psychological Examination Of Love And Friendship During Extraordinary Experiences, Emma Barnes
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Seventy-five percent of people in the Peace Corps fall in love. College students go on Semester at Sea and come back calling it “the love boat.” Mormon missionaries meet their soulmates. The list goes on and on. Why are people going on these excursions and forming such intense bonds? And what do all of them even have in common? Well, they all fall under the category of “extraordinary experiences,” according to the criterion of intensity, engagement, and temporality. During experiences such as these, dopamine levels in the brain spike significantly. After a while, our brains become hardwired by the mundane …

Human wildlife interactions (HWI) pose a complex challenge for wildlife managers. Human encroachment into wildlife habitat and the growing number of outdoor recreationists are increasing the frequency of contact and conflict, especially in regions such as the Front Range of Colorado. Geographic information systems (GIS), which use a combination of remote sensing and environmental survey data, allow for predictive spatial analyses of where human wildlife interactions are likely to occur. I used publicly reported observations of moose to create spatial predictive maps in a species distribution model framework. Slope and elevation were shown to be the strongest predictors of HWI, …

Empowering Women In The Zambian Gemstone Industry A Pathway To Bridge The Gender Gap In Value Addition, Kanekwa Kachinga
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The Zambian gemstone industry is a critical sector with vast potential for economic growth. However, women in this industry often face significant barriers to participating in value-adding processes, particularly in cutting and polishing gemstones. This capstone project explores the challenges and opportunities for empowering women in Zambian gemstone value-adding through cutting and polishing.
By conducting a comprehensive literature review and engaging in primary research, this study aims to elucidate the multifaceted obstacles that hinder women's full participation in the cutting and polishing aspects of the gemstone value chain. It also aims to highlight the socio-cultural and economic factors that contribute …
Creating A Community-Centric Framework For Nonprofit Organizations In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Kiandra Quinn
Creating A Community-Centric Framework For Nonprofit Organizations In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Kiandra Quinn
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This Capstone project investigates the contrasting approaches of donor-centric and community-centric fundraising models. The literature review traces the evolution of modern philanthropic practices, highlighting how the donor-centric model became the standard in the nonprofit sector and examining its limitations, which can hinder a nonprofit's ability to support its clients effectively. In contrast, community-centric philanthropy prioritizes collective community needs, aspirations, and strengths over individual donor preferences. This model engages communities to identify pressing challenges and co-create solutions to address systemic issues, emphasizing the diversity and complexity of communities while fostering empowerment, collaboration, and partnerships among stakeholders for sustainable change.

Menstrual Health and Hygiene (“MHH”) is an increasing focus for the development sector because of the potential to improve the lives of women and girls by empowering them to understand and care for their bodies and to overcome the shame and stigma associated with cultural taboos around menstruation that exist all over the world. In West Bengal, India, embarrassment and secrecy surrounding menstruation, which is commonly considered an impurity, means that many menstruators do not understand the biological causes of menstruation, and many do not share information about their experiences managing menstruation and its impact on their daily lives. The Effects And Success Rates Of Different Conservation Efforts On The Viability Of Elephant And Rhinoceros Populations On The African Continent, Katherine Raper
The Effects And Success Rates Of Different Conservation Efforts On The Viability Of Elephant And Rhinoceros Populations On The African Continent, Katherine Raper
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Over the past few centuries, there has been a serious decline in elephant and rhinoceros’ populations on the African continent. No matter the species, the drop in habitat range and population size has been drastic. This decline has ultimately been caused by the increase in the human population. Whether it be habitat fragmentation, habitat loss, or poaching, humans have had a direct impact on the forest and savanna elephant, and the black and white rhinoceros. While the relationship between these animals and the human population started as one founded in respect and reverence, the human need for land and resources …

ABSTRACT
Name: Lauren Thelen Major: Health Care Administration The Art of Healing from the Inside-Out: A Memoir
Advisor’s Name: Anandita Mukherji, Ph.D. Reader’s Name: Melissa Bosworth, MS
The health care system is no stranger to many of us. From before we are born to our last days, we interact with health care settings and providers. This is a good thing--we receive care and feel better--or at least that is the case most of the time. What this statement does not acknowledge is that the health care system fails us, through inadequate communication, dialect barriers and inability to diagnose. The purpose …
Neuroanatomical Bases Of Semantics And Determinants Of Meaning, Marguerite Peck
Neuroanatomical Bases Of Semantics And Determinants Of Meaning, Marguerite Peck
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Both neuroscience and linguistics study semantics, yet often in separation. Their independent pursuits may be experimentally productive, but prescribe their inability to fully predict or explain how language triggers meaning. Advances in neuroscience identify instances of lateralized language and frequently attribute word meaning retrieval to the temporal lobe, yet these findings are inevitably accompanied by the understanding that this type of cognitive ability is a result of neural interconnectivity. Meaning itself is associative, dependent on multiple neural bases to conceptualize, integrate, and coordinate information. That said, meaning is not a sole result of mental operation: external features such as the …

Hormonal cycles play an essential role in the development and maturation of young boys and girls into men and women. As teenagers enter their late teens and early twenties, their hormonal cycles are primarily responsible for functions related to fertility and hormone production. During this period of time, these men and women are often in their collegiate years. Overall, the college experience is enjoyable for many students, but it can also be a very stressful time due to a difficult class load and the students’ need to balance their academic, social, and personal lives. Recent studies have analyzed the effects …
The Dark Side Of Genetics: Analyzing The Predisposition To Murder, Isabella De Leon
The Dark Side Of Genetics: Analyzing The Predisposition To Murder, Isabella De Leon
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Violence is something we’ve all experienced to various degrees. Although murder is less common compared to other violent crimes, it nevertheless remains a devastating issue. It would be foolish to not allocate resources in search of a cure for murder. Modern genetics not only offers an answer, but a solution as well. What if we could identify murderers the day they were born? We have the technology to identify the genes (MAOA and CDH13) associated with murder, as well as the tools to edit them. There have been several movies and shows made regarding this theory, so why …
