The Nature And Distribution Of Turf-Banked Terraces In The Olympic Mountains, Washington, Katherine Jane Hansen Jul 1976

The Nature And Distribution Of Turf-Banked Terraces In The Olympic Mountains, Washington, Katherine Jane Hansen

Dissertations and Theses

Well-developed turf-banked terraces are found in the Olympic.Mountains of Washington, but not found· in the other mountains of the Pacific Northwest. My study is based just on the Olympic Mountains and the·major thrust of my investigation is aimed at answering questions: What is the nature of turf-banked terrace development in the Olympic Mountains? Why does it occur, and what is its local ecological significance? The major field investigations were carried out during the summer of 1975.

A two hour reconnaissance was made over the Olympic Mountains to plot the distribution of turf-banked terraces; the most striking discovery was that terraces …

Contributions To Tualatin Ethnography: Subsistence And Ethnobiology, Henry B. Zenk Jun 1976

Contributions To Tualatin Ethnography: Subsistence And Ethnobiology, Henry B. Zenk

Dissertations and Theses

There is a considerable amount of unpublished source material on Kalapuyan ethnography. This consists primarily of manuscript field notes from three linguistically trained scholars: Albert S. Gatschet, who collected Kalapuyan linguistic and ethnographic data during a visit to Grand Ronde Reservation in 1877, Leo J. Frachtenberg, who worked with a number of Kalapuyan informants from 1913 to 1915, and Melville Jacobs, who worked with the last surviving speakers of Kalapuyan languages during a number of sessions between 1928 and 1936. Data from these three authorities, plus other available data, reveal many details about aboriginal Kalapuyan life ("aboriginal" here referring to …

A Comparative Study Of Aristotle's Poetics And Ezra Pound's Abc Of Reading, Michael P. Hagensick Jun 1976

A Comparative Study Of Aristotle's Poetics And Ezra Pound's Abc Of Reading, Michael P. Hagensick

Dissertations and Theses

This paper is a comparative study of Aristotle's Poetics and Ezra Pound's ABC of Reading to discover and determine values in literature, especially poetry, which reflect on the nature and the manifestations of human communication. I feel that scholars in the field of communication can benefit personally and academically from exposure to those poets who have expressed themselves on the reasons or the manners in which people communicate. To pursue this question requires the use of a guide to poetry, a method by which I can learn to recognize a poem on sight; so that when it comes to discourse …

The Addition Of Sf5br To Unsaturated Systems, Qui-Chee Wendy Wang Jun 1976

The Addition Of Sf5br To Unsaturated Systems, Qui-Chee Wendy Wang

Dissertations and Theses

Addition reactions of pentafluorosulfur bromide with unsaturated substrates were studied and four new compounds containing the pentafluorosulfur group have been prepared.

The mechanism for these reactions seems to involve a radical addition pathway. In reaction with CH2=CFC1, CF3C≡CH and CH3C≡CH the SF5 radical attacks the carbon atoms carrying the most hydrogens. The reaction with CF2=CHCl is interesting, as by analogy with other fluoroolefins, the SF5 primary attack should occur.at the CHCl group, however, SF5CF2CHC1Br was found as the only product for this reaction. The reaction of …

Postdivorce Parental Roles: A Descriptive Study, Victor R. Congleton, Lisa Christina Londos Jun 1976

Postdivorce Parental Roles: A Descriptive Study, Victor R. Congleton, Lisa Christina Londos

Dissertations and Theses

Divorce is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon in American society. Its occurrence is increasing both in absolute and relative numbers, and also in its involvement of minor children. As will be demonstrated below, very little is actually known about the process of divorce or about its impact on the members of the family. Of particular concern is the effect of divorce on the children invo1ved, and the decisions and practice of the divorcing parents regarding their subsequent parenting relationship to the children.

The authors of this report intend to study a random sample of divorcing couples and to derive a …

The Analysis Of The Deflection And Containment Of A Hot Plume By Side Draft Exhaust Hooding, Douglas H. Macgowan May 1976

The Analysis Of The Deflection And Containment Of A Hot Plume By Side Draft Exhaust Hooding, Douglas H. Macgowan

Dissertations and Theses

A common industrial ventilation and pollution problem results when a thermally buoyant polluted plume of air must be exhausted away from a work area to allow achievement of air pollution standards. Generally, a close fitting canopy hood is one of the most effective means of exhaust containment; however, physical restrictions or the operation itself often prevent such an arrangement, and a hood located to the side of the operation is required. This arrangement requires the exhaust to bend and contain the vertically rising plume with a horizontal sweep of exhaust air across the surface of the operation.

The population under study is composed of all Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program members twenty years of age and older, discharged from Bess Kaiser Hospital during 1974, and whose diagnosed morbidity was included in specific morbidity categories. All data were obtained through the facilities of the Health Services Research Center, Kaiser Foundation …

Series Of Drawings And Paintings, William Dyas Garnett May 1976

Series Of Drawings And Paintings, William Dyas Garnett

Dissertations and Theses

At the beginning or the program my work was strongly oriented toward the individual objects used in the paintings and lacked any cohesive means or unification. Collage was used as an attempt for unification but more was still needed. It was not until I let go or observed or preconceived images and allowed the image to develop from the free now or washes and lines that I was able to allow the picture to give ideas back to me. The pictures were now growing from themselves and from the ideas suggested to me, without having to force the image prior …

The Chromosome Constitutions Of A Hybrid Salmonid And Its Parental Types: Salmo Gairdneri And Salmo Clarki, Peter Bruce Valentine Jacky May 1976

The Chromosome Constitutions Of A Hybrid Salmonid And Its Parental Types: Salmo Gairdneri And Salmo Clarki, Peter Bruce Valentine Jacky

Dissertations and Theses

A study was undertaken to investigate the application of tissue culture and histochemical banding techniques normally used in mammalian studies to fish cells and to examine the mechanisms of chromosome evolution and speciation in salmonids by comparing the chromosomes of the hybrid to those of the parental types. The application of banding techniques was generally unsuccessful in revealing bands, though quinacrine staining did reveal the presence of two fluorescent spots in the vicinity of the centromere. These were thought to be heterochromatic blocks, possibly related to the high incidence of centric fusion or fission in salmonids. Results of chromosome analysis …

Bayesian Inquiry: An Approach To The Use Of Experts, King G. Yee May 1976

Bayesian Inquiry: An Approach To The Use Of Experts, King G. Yee

Dissertations and Theses

Subjective information is a valuable resource; however, decisionmakers often ignore it because of difficulties in eliciting it from assessors. This thesis is on Bayesian inquiry and it presents an approach to eliciting subjective information from assessors. Based on the concepts of cascaded inference and Bayesian statistics, the approach is designed to reveal to the decision-maker the way in which the assessor considers his options and the reasons he has for selecting particular alternatives. Unlike previous works on cascaded inferences, the approach here focuses on incoherency. Specifically, it employs the use of additional information to revise and check the estimates. The …

The Design Of An Automatic Electronic Preanodizer, Armen C. Grossenbacher May 1976

The Design Of An Automatic Electronic Preanodizer, Armen C. Grossenbacher

Dissertations and Theses

The topic of this thesis is the design of an automatic preanodizer to be used to preadjust precision tantalum resistors by anodizing their surfaces. The purpose of the preanodizer is to generate a controllable voltage ramp to be applied to a set of tantalum resistors which are immersed in a suitable electrolyte. The slope and maximum value of the voltage ramp are set to produce the current required for proper anodization of the resistors. The rate of anodization determines the rate of change of the resistor value. This thesis covers the design of an electronic device to meet a set …

Clinical Application Of The Midi-Mult, Barbara Hendricks May 1976

Clinical Application Of The Midi-Mult, Barbara Hendricks

Dissertations and Theses

The MMPI is used as a diagnostic tool in clinical settings. However, its length is a detriment. Various attempts have been made to develop shortened versions of the standard MMPI. One of the widely used short forms is Kincannon's Mini-Mult, but its validity scales are less accurate than the full MMPI.

Dean's Midi-Mult is a more recent short form of the MMPI designed to approximate more closely the scores on the validity scales and clinical scales of the standard MMPI.

Revolutions: A Comparative Study, Thomas E. Gill

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to describe and then to compare common descriptive characteristics (uniformities) evident within three historical events: the Paris Commune of 1871, the Zapatista Movement of the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1919, and the Spartacist Rebellion of 1919. One such uniformity is the fact that all three are abortive social revolutions.
