The United States has been providing federally mandated educational access to children with disabilities for more than 35 years. During this relatively short period of time, the quality of education for children with physical, mental, emotional, and genetic challenges has been enhanced exponentially. Through federal legislation and nationwide litigation, formal structures have been created to ensure that the nation's 7.1 million students with special needs receive a free and appropriate public education. The California State University (CSU) system is the largest public university system in United Sates. In 2014, female student population was 56% and 42% were male. The purpose of this study was to investigate which of the 7 motivational factors measured in the Student Motivations for Attending University-Revised (SMAU) survey developed by Phinney, Dennis, and Osorio (2006)—career/personal, humanitarian, prove worth, default, expectation, encouragement, and help family—if any, contribute to African-American male and Latino male community college completion/graduation at a 2-year community college in Southern California and transfer to 4-year universities. In community colleges, over 70% of faculty members are adjuncts, and over 52% of these adjuncts are women. Community colleges have been celebrated as institutions that include women in their philosophy of equity, openness, and democracy (Bailey, 2008). Women may be more likely to work at community colleges where the minimum requirement is a master’s degree for employment, compared to 4-year institutions that require doctorates, and allow them to balance their work and personal lives (Cohen & Brawer, 2008; Wolf-Wendel & Ward, 2006).
