Tf-Cbt With The Pediatric Medical Population: A Modification, Hussah Talal Al-Kharafi Jan 2017

Tf-Cbt With The Pediatric Medical Population: A Modification, Hussah Talal Al-Kharafi

Theses and Dissertations

According to The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN, 2004) up to 15-20% of children and their siblings and 20-30% of parents experience persistent traumatic stress related to medical procedures or a life-threatening condition that affects daily functioning and recovery. The literature is limited with regards to efficacious treatment interventions for this population. Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for traumatized children and adolescents (Cohen, Mannarino, & Deblinger, 2006). Its efficacy in reducing PTSD symptoms has been established through the literature (Bisson, Roberts, Andrew, Cooper, & Lewis, 2013; Cary & McMillen, 2012; Silverman et al., 2008), and it …

A Mixed Methods Study Examining Parent Impressions Of A Psychoeducational Program On Common Issues During Childhood, Erika Rajo

Theses and Dissertations

The rate of youth suffering from untreated emotional and behavioral problems has risen in recent years. Various barriers to treatment utilization of youth and their families have been identified in the literature, including logistical factors (i.e. transportation, lack of child care), financial barriers, as well as system barriers (i.e. limited knowledge of mental health difficulties among parents of young children). Parents/caregivers are often the primary gatekeepers to treatment for children suffering from mental health problems. Additionally, psychoeducational programs have increasingly gained support as an effective evidence-based practice that may bolster treatment utilization among youth. A psychoeducational program for parents of …

Processes And Mechanisms Of Change In Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy: A Case Study Of One Couple With Distress Over Child Rearing, Jessica S. Schachter

Theses and Dissertations

Marital distress is common and can have a tremendous influence on an entire family. Spousal conflict related to children is known to have a particularly negative impact on both the parenting and marital relationship. A number of evidence-based therapies exist to support couples in need including integrative behavioral couple therapy (IBCT; Jacobson & Christensen, 1998), which focuses on emotional acceptance and behavior change as mechanisms that improve marital satisfaction. While IBCT is well documented as an effective treatment with lasting outcomes (Christensen, et al., 2004), how and why IBCT works remains less clear. The current study used qualitative methodology to …

Examining Therapists' Perceptions Of Barriers To Treatment With Youth And Their Families : A Mixed Methods Study, Gimel Rogers Jan 2015

Examining Therapists' Perceptions Of Barriers To Treatment With Youth And Their Families : A Mixed Methods Study, Gimel Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

The present study identified and quantified five main barriers to treatment categories, deducted first from the qualitative dataset, then consolidated with the results of the quantitative dataset. Clinicians (N=36) that worked with youth and their families participated. The main findings suggested five parent themes (practical obstacles, poor alliance with the therapist, therapist's perceptions, socioemotional, and cultural) and seven concept groups (transportation, financial, logistical, attendance, therapeutic relationship, lack of communication, and lack of engagement). Implications provide strategies to ratify some of these barriers, such as gathering data on youth clients and their families. For the purposes of this study, the terms …

Clinician Conceptualizations Of Post-Migration Refugee Youth Previously Exposed To Political Violence, Sara Michele Mehrabani Jan 2013

Clinician Conceptualizations Of Post-Migration Refugee Youth Previously Exposed To Political Violence, Sara Michele Mehrabani

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have examined the experience of distress with refugee children and adolescents who have been exposed to political violence. Recognition has also been given to migration stress and traumatic grief as additional stressors in the lives of refugee youth. Studies in this area have established the fact that development appears to influence the expression of distress in youth who have experienced adverse experiences such as political violence. Reaction to political violence and the refugee experience also appear mediated by culture as well as other contextual factors such as the nature of the violence. The purpose of this study was to …

Listening To The Voices Of Preschool Aged Children Experiencing Homelessness: A Qualitative Approach, Maureen Turner

Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory, three phase qualitative research project gives a voice to preschool aged children experiencing homelessness to identify the significant relationships in their lives. Goals of this research included the exploration of: the central relationships of children experiencing homelessness, who children identify as important people in those relationships, how they describe those relationships, and how those relationships were formed. This research approach utilized a community participatory model in which the children's mothers contributed to the direction of the research project through group interviews. Children were observed for four months and then interviewed while completing three activities. The results suggested three …
