Professional Learning Communities As A Reform: Implementation, Complications And Implications For Secondary Site Leaders, Jennifer Lynn Padilla Jan 2013

Professional Learning Communities As A Reform: Implementation, Complications And Implications For Secondary Site Leaders, Jennifer Lynn Padilla

Theses and Dissertations

Professional learning communities (PLCs) have gained attention as an effective practice for supporting teachers and developing students since their inception in the early 1990s yet there is still work to be done in developing a blueprint for effective implementation in a pervasive culture of isolation and resistance, especially in secondary schools. While there is political, scholarly and practitioner interest in PLCs as a reform, few empirical studies explore the leadership implications of implementation. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to investigate the lived experience of 6 secondary site leaders in the Southern California region as related to the …

Morally Injurious Symptomatology: A Qualitative Examination Of The Nvvrs, Douglas Stewart Kraus

Theses and Dissertations

As with all psychological constructs in their infancy, it is important to operationalize a definition as part of the construct validation process. As a phenomenon that continues to gain recognition amongst the psychological community, Moral Injury (MI) is no different. Although Litz et al. (2009) introduced and defined MI as the "psychological, biological, spiritual, behavioral, and social impact of perpetrating, failing to prevent, or bearing witness to acts that transgress deeply held more beliefs and expectations," Drescher et al. (2011) found that a similar working definition was "inadequate" and lacked clarity according to trauma experts' opinion. The following exploratory, qualitative …

The purpose of this study was to examine how specific leadership traits and characteristics have contributed to the career progress of 6 elected women who represent California constituents within the local, state, …

On Humor And Healing: A Qualitative Analysis Of Expressions Of Humor In Therapy With Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma, Rebecca Rutchick Jan 2013

On Humor And Healing: A Qualitative Analysis Of Expressions Of Humor In Therapy With Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma, Rebecca Rutchick

Theses and Dissertations

From a positive psychology perspective, humor can be viewed as an adaptive strength, an important aspect of holistic health, and a potentially beneficial coping mechanism in the face of stressful or traumatic events. Existing research generally supports the idea that individuals can manage threatening situations by turning them into something that can be laughed at, although the effectiveness of such humor use is dependent on contextual factors and the specific forms of humor that are used (e.g., aggressive versus benign humor). However, there is minimal research on how trauma survivors actually express humor in therapy, particularly in the context of …

The Relevance Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Renee Felicia Dorn Jan 2013

The Relevance Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Renee Felicia Dorn

Theses and Dissertations

Starting in the mid-1800s, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were created for the purpose of educating Black students. Since their inception, HBCUs have transformed from institutions of higher learning with a core curriculum of teaching and ministerial education serving the Black community to progressive colleges and universities that provide bachelor, master, and doctorate degrees in specialized areas of study which serve and benefit communities of all races around the world. As advanced as HBCUs have become, they still have the stigma of being less than adequate producing underachieving students. An increase in publicity of their accomplishments would help to …

Expressions Of Social Support: A Qualitative Analysis Of Psychotherapy With Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma, Celine F. Crespi-Hunt Jan 2013

Expressions Of Social Support: A Qualitative Analysis Of Psychotherapy With Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma, Celine F. Crespi-Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

One commonly accepted protective factor, social support, is hypothesized to be both helpful and harmful following exposure to traumatic events (Bonanno, 2008; Ellis, Nixon, & Williamson, 2009; Lyons, 1991). Although at least 10 theoretical models have been proposed to explain the relationship between social support and post-traumatic responses, existing theories do not adequately capture the multidimensional experience of social support, which is comprised of several constructs and structures (e.g., received and perceived support; support functions and content). Moreover, existing social support theories have not been studied in research related to therapy with traumatized clients. The present study, therefore, examined how …

Emotional Intelligence Implications On The Career Advancement Of Women In A Fortune 500 Pharmaceutical Company, Shawn D. Andrews Jan 2013

Emotional Intelligence Implications On The Career Advancement Of Women In A Fortune 500 Pharmaceutical Company, Shawn D. Andrews

Theses and Dissertations

Women account for more than 50% of college graduates, more than 50% of professional degrees such as M.D. and J.D., and more than 50.0% of management, professional, and related occupations (Labor, 2011). However, women hold only 14.3% of executive officer positions of the Fortune 500 companies, and the number of female CEOs at these companies is 3.8% (Catalyst, 2012). Given these statistics, a natural shift to a more gender-balanced senior management should be a reasonable, expected outcome. In addition, research in the past decade lead by Daniel Goleman (1995, 2000, 2004) has identified an individual's emotional intelligence as a key …

The Relation Between Mindfulness And Perceived Self-Efficacy Towards Coping With Negative Affect In Recovering Alcoholics, Christopher Jay Link

Theses and Dissertations

Negative affect can be a highly potent trigger for relapse among those in recovery for alcoholism, whereas self-efficacy has been identified as an important factor for relapse prevention. Much research has attempted to identify factors and interventions that can enhance self-efficacy and improve the coping ability of those in recovery to manage negative affect. This study sought to determine whether dispositional mindfulness might be a useful tool in this regard, by investigating for a possible relationship between this variable and self-efficacy towards coping with negative affect. Additional variables (i.e., length of time abstinent, meditation frequency/duration, history of polysubstance abuse/dependence, and …

This project aimed to explore the unique challenges of part-time military families, looking specifically into how partners of reservist military and regular military soldiers significantly differ in their description of the deployment experience and relational/marital satisfaction, as well as if deployment experience factors or certain demographic characteristics of partners of soldiers predict reported rates of marital satisfaction. A snowballing method to recruit …

Clinician Conceptualizations Of Post-Migration Refugee Youth Previously Exposed To Political Violence, Sara Michele Mehrabani

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have examined the experience of distress with refugee children and adolescents who have been exposed to political violence. Throughout history there are individuals who have been praised for their leadership abilities. What can we learn from them? The purpose of this study was to determine the key leadership …

Maintaining Adolescent Sobriety With Equine Assisted Psychotherapy: An Experiential Learning Intervention Guide, Elizabeth Jane Ledbetter

Theses and Dissertations

Given the prevalence of substance abuse among American adolescents, the implementation of innovative treatment modalities is highly indicated. The practice of animal assisted therapy, specifically equine assisted psychotherapy (EAP), has been demonstrated to effect positive changes and personal growth within participants and is suggested within this work to be applicable to adolescents in residential substance abuse treatment facilities. Due to the benefits evidenced by the therapeutic modality of EAP, participation is hypothesized to promote and maintain abstinence among this population. Thus, this project focused on highlighting the empirical evidence associated with animal assisted therapy, particularly EAP, as well as reviewing …

Expressions Of Cultural Worldviews In Psychotherapy With Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma: A Qualitative Study From A Terror Management Perspective, Christopher Ogle

Theses and Dissertations

People who have experienced trauma involving serious threats to physical integrity can react in accordance with various response trajectories, including posttraumatic growth (PTG). PTG is characterized by positive psychological change following trauma that goes beyond a return to pre-trauma functioning as the result of reorganizing one's conceptualization of his or her phenomenological world (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004). This study was interested in factors that contribute to PTG from a terror management theory (TMT) perspective. TMT, based on existential philosophy, posits that people defend against the knowledge that everyone must eventually die and the accompanying anxiety by investing in cultural worldviews …

Clinical Intake Interviewing: Proposing Lgb Affirmative Recommendations, Sharon Birman

Theses and Dissertations

The initial impression a client formulates about the therapist is critical to establishing a deep and meaningful working alliance. This dissertation endeavors to respond to the growing need for the clinical application of LGB affirmative approaches. An overview of the following bodies of literature is offered: (a) consequences of heterosexism on the lives of LGB individuals, (b) heterosexism and the field of psychology, …
