Test Variation In The Sand Dollar, Mellita Quinquiesperforata (Leske), George Glynn Rountree Apr 1976

Test Variation In The Sand Dollar, Mellita Quinquiesperforata (Leske), George Glynn Rountree

OES Theses and Dissertations

Mellita quinguiesperforata is a common member of the benthos along the eastern coast of North America. This study considers variation of the test within the species, specifically: 1) variation in test weight, 2) variation in the length-width relationship, and 3) the average number of pore pairs in the ambulacral petals.

A total of 844 sand dollars from three localities was utilized: 1) Pass-a-Grill Beach, St. Petersburg, Florida,2) Bird Shoal, Beaufort, North Carolina, and 3) Fisherman Island, Virginia.

Animals were measured for length and width and the dry weight determined. Prediction equations for the size-weight relat1onships were computed for the three …

Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoretic Studies Demonstrating Cytoplasmic Protein Components Unique To The Mycelial Phase And To The Yeast Phase Of Candida Albicans, Theresa Catherine Burgess Apr 1976

Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoretic Studies Demonstrating Cytoplasmic Protein Components Unique To The Mycelial Phase And To The Yeast Phase Of Candida Albicans, Theresa Catherine Burgess

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Blastospore and mycelial cytoplasmic extracts from four strains of Candida albicans, varying in virulence, were compared by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis Cytoplasmic extracts were made by disrupting the cultures in a Braun homogenizer followed by ultracentrifugation. The supernatant fractions were then resolved on polyacrylamide gels containing SDS. Each of the preparations yielded a distinct pattern. There were mycelial specific and blastospore specific protein bands. There were more components resolved from the blastospore phase cytoplasmic extracts than from the mycelial phase cytoplasmic extracts. There were bands common to both phases. These results demonstrate protein components unique …

The Distribution Of Submersed Hydrophytes In Currituck Sound, Steven Harry Davis Apr 1976

The Distribution Of Submersed Hydrophytes In Currituck Sound, Steven Harry Davis

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The rooted submergent flora of Currituck Sound, North Carolina was determined, and the distributions of its species investigated with respect to salinity, substrate texture, depth, pH, turbidity and species co-occurrence. Eight species of hydrophytes were found: Potamogeton pectinatus, Fotamogeton perfoliatus, Ruppia maritima, Zannichellia palustris, Najas guadalupensis, Elodea nuttallii, Vallisneria americana, and Myriophyllum spicatum. The mean salinities at which each species occurred ranged from 1.0 ppt for E. nuttallii to 3.1 ppt for Z. palustris, Ruppia maritima, Z palustris and V. americana were the only species that commonly occurred on coarse-grained substrates. Elodea nuttallii and N. guadalupensis …

Similitude Of Mass Transfer Processes In Distorted Froude Model Of An Estuary, Carvel Hall Blair Apr 1976

Similitude Of Mass Transfer Processes In Distorted Froude Model Of An Estuary, Carvel Hall Blair

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The project began with the design and construction of a hydraulic Froude model of the Lafayette River, a small well mixed estuary in Norfolk, Virginia. Horizontal scale is 1/540, vertical scale 1/12 yielding a vertical distortion of 45. Adjustment by roughness strips and screens produced close agreement of model-prototype tide heights, currents, and salinities in the deep reaches comprising 80% of the estuary volume. Some scale effect in velocity and tide height could not be eliminated in the shallow upper branches of the estuary, probably because of the high geometric distortion and the narrowness of the channel at kilometer 6.7. …

A Study Of Employment Opportunities And Job Requirements For Entry-Level Stenographic Occupations In Suffolk, Virginia Businesses, Margaret Wishon Willett Jan 1976

A Study Of Employment Opportunities And Job Requirements For Entry-Level Stenographic Occupations In Suffolk, Virginia Businesses, Margaret Wishon Willett

OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers

Answers were sought to the following questions: 1. Are there stenographic positions available in the Suffolk, Virginia business community for the inexperienced worker who has had stenographic training? 2. Do employers have a preference as to the educational training of their beginning stenographic employees? 3. What skills, knowledge and personal qualities do employers expect from beginning stenographic workers? 4. If there are stenographic positions open to inexperienced stenographers, are these employees adequately trained to fill the positions? If not, what areas need improvement?

Investigating Methods Of Accelerating The Seasoning Of Wood Blanks For Bowl Turning, Myron W. Curtis Jan 1976

Investigating Methods Of Accelerating The Seasoning Of Wood Blanks For Bowl Turning, Myron W. Curtis

OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers

The purpose of the study was to establish through experimental research an improved method of accelerating the seasoning of bowl blanks. Specifically the study was conducted to determine: 1. Whether a worthwhile method or methods were available for accelerating the seasoning of wood bowl blanks; 2. Whether the blanks were of suitable quality; 3. Whether the method or methods present a worthwhile learning experience; 4. Whether the unseasoned wood and the equipment used in seasoning were available, safe, and within reasonable financial means.
