Optimal Social Insurance For Heterogeneous Agents With Private Insurance, Brandon Lehr
Optimal Social Insurance For Heterogeneous Agents With Private Insurance, Brandon Lehr
Brandon Lehr
This article analytically characterizes optimal social insurance in an economy with both ex ante heterogeneity and ex post risk, decomposing the benefits of social insurance into a redistributive and insurance benefit. Agents exert effort to increase the likelihood of high outcome events and are additionally supplied actuarially fair private insurance for this earnings risk. This article is novel in its joint consideration of two sources of heterogeneity, two potential sources of insurance, and an endogenous ex post distribution of outcomes. The introduction of optimal private insurance eliminates the insurance benefit of social insurance, but leaves the redistributive benefit intact. An …
Hiring As A Herd: Optimal Unemployment Insurance With Asymmetric Information, Brandon Lehr
Hiring As A Herd: Optimal Unemployment Insurance With Asymmetric Information, Brandon Lehr
Brandon Lehr
This paper characterizes optimal unemployment insurance (UI) in terms of estimable statistics in the presence of negative duration dependence for the unemployed, with endogenous callback rates generated by asymmetric information. I show how this characterization generalizes the standard Baily-Chetty framework. In addition, I construct an approximation for optimal UI as a function of the average elasticity of callback rates with respect to unemployment benefits. There is no estimate of this elasticity in the literature, but I illustrate the responsiveness of optimal UI to this elasticity.
Distribution And Dietary Regulation Of An Associated Facultative Rhizobiales-Related Bacterium In The Omnivorous Giant Tropical Ant, Paraponera Clavata, Hannah Larson, Shana Goffredi, Erica Parra, Orlando Vargas, Adrian Pinto-Tomas, Terrence Mcglynn
Distribution And Dietary Regulation Of An Associated Facultative Rhizobiales-Related Bacterium In The Omnivorous Giant Tropical Ant, Paraponera Clavata, Hannah Larson, Shana Goffredi, Erica Parra, Orlando Vargas, Adrian Pinto-Tomas, Terrence Mcglynn
Shana Goffredi
We document a facultative Bartonella-like Rhizobiales bacterium in the giant tropical ant, Paraponera clavata. In a lowland tropical rainforest in Costa Rica, 59 colonies were assayed for the prevalence of the Bartonella-like bacterium (BLB), 14 of which were positive. We addressed three questions: First, how does the prevalence of BLB within colonies vary with environmental conditions? Second, how does diet affect the prevalence of BLB in P. clavata? Third, how does the distribution of BLB among colonies reflect ambient differences in food resources and foraging habits? A variety of environmental variables that may be predictive of the presence of BLB …
Ontogenetic Variation In Epibiont Community Structure In The Deep-Sea Yeti Crab, Kiwa Hirsuta: Convergence Among Crustaceans, Shana Goffredi, Ann Gregory, William Jones, Norma Morella, Reid Sakamoto
Ontogenetic Variation In Epibiont Community Structure In The Deep-Sea Yeti Crab, Kiwa Hirsuta: Convergence Among Crustaceans, Shana Goffredi, Ann Gregory, William Jones, Norma Morella, Reid Sakamoto
Shana Goffredi
Recent investigations have demonstrated that unusually 'hairy' yeti crabs within the family Kiwaidae associate with two predominant filamentous bacterial families, the Epsilon and Gammaproteobacteria. These analyses, however, were based on samples collected from a single body region, the setae of pereopods. To more thoroughly investigate the microbiome associated with Kiwa puravida, a yeti crab species from Costa Rica, we utilized barcoded 16S rRNA amplicon pyrosequencing, as well as microscopy and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Results indicate that, indeed, the bacterial community on the pereopods is far less diverse than on the rest of the body (Shannon indices ranged …
Optimal Income Taxation With Social Preferences, Brandon Lehr
Optimal Income Taxation With Social Preferences, Brandon Lehr
Brandon Lehr
This paper characterizes optimal nonlinear income taxation of individuals who exhibit social preferences. If individuals exhibit equity concerns, above and beyond the government's social welfare criterion, how is the shape of the marginal tax schedule impacted? In particular, I consider individuals who are concerned not only with their own consumption and labor supply, but also care positively or negatively about some aggregate consumption reference point. In addition, I allow for individuals to differ with respect to their attitudes towards this reference point. This framework flexibly allows for the specification of preferences that may be concerned with baseline altruism, inequality aversion, …
Cross-Cultural Colour–Odour Associations, Jiana Ren, Andy Woods, Kirsten Mckenzie, Lx Ru, Carmel Levitan
Cross-Cultural Colour–Odour Associations, Jiana Ren, Andy Woods, Kirsten Mckenzie, Lx Ru, Carmel Levitan
Carmel Levitan
Associations between colour and odour are likely culturally specific. Exposure to a new culture’s cuisine and food customs however may alter these associations. Here we test for cultural colour–odour association differences and whether exposure to a new culture impacts upon these associations. Participants were given 14 odours and choose from a chart of 36 randomly presented colours which of 3 colours they most associated with each odorant, and which of 3 colours was least associated with each. Data collection was done on Android and Apple iPod devices using Xperiment software (see www.xperiment.mobi). In the first study, we tested equal numbers …

I provide a correction to the proof of the main proposition in the analysis of an efficiency wage model with a continuum of heterogeneous agents constructed by Albrecht and Vroman (1998).
Aquatic Microbial Habitats Within A Neotropical Rainforest: Bromeliads And Ph-Associated Trends In Bacterial Diversity And Composition, Shana Goffredi, Adam Kantor, Walter Woodside
Aquatic Microbial Habitats Within A Neotropical Rainforest: Bromeliads And Ph-Associated Trends In Bacterial Diversity And Composition, Shana Goffredi, Adam Kantor, Walter Woodside
Shana Goffredi
Tank-forming bromeliads, suspended in the rainforest canopy, possess foliage arranged in compact rosettes capable of long-term retention of rainwater. This large and unique aquatic habitat is inhabited by microorganisms involved in the important decomposition of impounded material. Moreover, these communities are likely influenced by environmental factors such as pH, oxygen, and light. Bacterial community composition and diversity was determined for the tanks of several bromeliad species (Aechmea and Werauhia) from northern Costa Rica, which span a range of parameters, including tank morphology and pH. These were compared with a nearby forest soil sample, an artificial tank (amber bottle), and a …
Decadal-Scale Changes In Southern California Sciaenids Under Different Levels Of Harvesting Pressure, Eric F. Miller, Daniel J. Pondella Ii, D Shane Beck, Kevin T. Herbinson
Decadal-Scale Changes In Southern California Sciaenids Under Different Levels Of Harvesting Pressure, Eric F. Miller, Daniel J. Pondella Ii, D Shane Beck, Kevin T. Herbinson
Daniel Pondella
A unique 38-year time-series of power-plant entrapment data collected across ∼170 km of the southern California coastline was examined to describe the decadal-scale trends in common Southern California Bight sciaenid abundance in relation to oceanographic conditions. Adult catches for five of seven species declined at differing rates and severity. Declines of up to 94% were detected in historically common species such as Genyonemus lineatus, whereas historically less abundant species have increased dramatically, e.g. Umbrina roncador (2626%). Over time, the entrapped community became increasingly influenced by species with more southerly distributions, indicated by a significant decline in the average latitudinal midpoint …
Does Food Color Influence Taste And Flavor Perception In Humans?, Charles Spence, Carmel Levitan, Maya Shankar, Massimiliano Zampini
Does Food Color Influence Taste And Flavor Perception In Humans?, Charles Spence, Carmel Levitan, Maya Shankar, Massimiliano Zampini
Carmel Levitan
In this paper, we review the empirical literature concerning the important question of whether or not food color influences taste and flavor perception in humans. Although a superficial reading of the literature on this topic would appear to give a somewhat mixed answer, we argue that this is, at least in part, due to the fact that many researchers have failed to distinguish between two qualitatively distinct research questions. The first concerns the role that food coloring plays in the perception of the intensity of a particular flavor (e.g., strawberry, banana, etc.) or taste attribute (e.g., sweetness, saltiness, etc.). The …
Bacterial Community Shifts In Taxa And Diversity In Response To Localized Organic Loading In The Deep Sea, Shana Goffredi, Victoria Orphan
Bacterial Community Shifts In Taxa And Diversity In Response To Localized Organic Loading In The Deep Sea, Shana Goffredi, Victoria Orphan
Shana Goffredi
The deep sea is a unique and extreme environment characterized by low concentrations of highly recalcitrant carbon. As a consequence, large organic inputs have potential to cause significant perturbation. To assess the impact of organic enrichment on deep sea microbial communities, we investigated bacterial diversity in sediments underlying two whale falls at 1820 and 2893 m depth in Monterey Canyon, as compared with surrounding reference sediment 10-20 m away. Bacteroidetes, Epsilonproteobacteria and Firmicutes were recovered primarily from whale fall-associated sediments, while Gammaproteobacteria and Planctomycetes were found primarily within reference sediments. Abundant Deltaproteobacteria were recovered from both sediment types, but the …

The Case For Substantivism, Carolyn Brighouse
The Case For Substantivism, Carolyn Brighouse
Carolyn Brighouse
My dissertation is a discussion of the ontological commitment of spacetime theories. I am concerned about whether we should be realists about spacetime. I outline a version of substantivalism that I show is attractive on general grounds in that it treats spacetime in just the same way that a realist ought to treat entities she is a realist about. I then show that this version of substantivalism is immune to the hole argument and other recent criticisms of substantivalism. I also re-examine traditional arguments for substantivalism, and show that my version is at least as well supported as more traditional …
