Investigating Cell Line Identity And Gene Regulation In A Broad Array Of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Ashley Mottar Jan 2011

Investigating Cell Line Identity And Gene Regulation In A Broad Array Of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Ashley Mottar

Honors Capstones

Cultured cancer cell lines are a widely used approach in our biology research. Our lab uses several human liver cancer lines to study the role of two amino acid transporters (ASCT2 and LAT1) during growth. To validate the identity of each line for comparative results, a means of positive ID is needed. Short tandem repeat (STR) analysis is a method that uses the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to examine 'w' specific DNA regions, called loci, which surround specific genes. Originally used in forensic analysis and paternity testing, STR analysis has recently become incorporated into research laboratories. The reason is due …

Rotator cuff injuries are the third most common injuries behind neck and back. By informing patients about the anatomical structure and the purpose of these four muscles, we can help prevent or at least postpone the injury. In any case of an injury, an informative case study would provide knowledge of what to expect from a physical therapist. This project provides a brief overview of the rotator cuff muscles and their function. It also goes into detail about different types of rotator cuff injuries. The major purpose of this project is to describe the steps a physical therapist would take …

The Effects Of A Serious Game On Learning, Gary Timmins Jan 2011

The Effects Of A Serious Game On Learning, Gary Timmins

Honors Capstones

This study tested the hypothesis that video game attributes (e.g., points, competition, pedagogical agents) affect learning and engagement in a computerized learning environment. Thirty-two undergraduate psychology students were randomly assigned to two computerized learning environments meant to teach aspects of scientific inquiry (e.g., the need for control groups). Both groups read, critiqued and identified flaws in short descriptions of research. One group used a program that simulates a video game environment while the other used a traditional computer-assisted instructional format. Both conditions were given a pre-test and post-test. An interaction between time of test and the game was found, indicating …

Pre- and post-test power measurements were done using the bench press with a specified light weight. For the lower body tests, …

Can An "Educational" Video Game Improve Cognition In Stroke/Brain Injury Survivors?, Stacey Behnke Jan 2011

Can An "Educational" Video Game Improve Cognition In Stroke/Brain Injury Survivors?, Stacey Behnke

Honors Capstones

Current healthcare policies limit the time during which intensive rehabilitation is available for stroke and brain injury survivors (AAPM&R, 2009). Yet the timeline for recovery from such insults extends well beyond the typical window of rehabilitation provision, which makes independently administered cognitive stimulation an essential component of the recovery process. Unfortunately, little data exist as to the efficacy of such programs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether a computerized, general cognitive stimulation program (Le., Nintendo OS' "Brain Age 2"), would successfully remediate specific cognitive skills in stroke or brain injury survivors compared to healthy controls. The …

The UN has been actively involved with ethnic conflict in the past 50 years and will continue to do so into the future. Examining the UN's policy towards the Turkish Cypriot secession will contribute to the understanding of the role the UN will play in future ethnic conflicts. How did the UN respond to the Turkish Cypriot Declaration of Independence and what impact did that response have on negotiations involving Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and …

An Introduction To The Role Of Physical Therapy In Idiopathic Toe Walking, Patrice Collins Jan 2011

An Introduction To The Role Of Physical Therapy In Idiopathic Toe Walking, Patrice Collins

Honors Capstones

Idiopathic toe walking (ITW) is a condition, whose cause is unknown, and characterized by a persistent tiptoe gait pattern without evidence of neurologic, orthopedic, or psychiatric disease. Children diagnosed with ITW are typically able to walk with a heel-strike gait for short periods of time when asked to do so. ITW is also known as habitual toe walking, idiosyncratic toewalking or forefoot walking. Children experiencing ITW may take their first few steps in a heel-to-toe pattern and rise to toe walking only when increasing their speed of ambulation. The diagnosis of ITW is one of exclusion, in which other causes …

Don't Sign Anything And Other Advice For Volunteering Abroad, Kyla Gardner Jan 2011

Don't Sign Anything And Other Advice For Volunteering Abroad, Kyla Gardner

Honors Capstones

The process of writing my memoir began with brainstorming. I created mind maps - the webbed charts of bubbles of related ideas - furiously, trying to get as much from my experience down on paper, as many ideas and memories and facts and people as possible. From there, I reread the journals I had kept. They were helpful for putting together a time-line of more significant events, but were largely full of my complaints and worries and therefore disappointingly less helpful as a chronology of my day-to-day activities. During the writing process, it was helpful to read memoirs. I saw …
