The Effects Of A Graded Exercise Session On Creatine Kinase (Ck) Blood Levels In The Older Adult, Rebecca J. Sefton

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this project was to examine the effect of a one-time graded exercise session on creatine kinase (CK) levels in the older adult. The goal was to determine the level of exercise intensity which maximally benefits the older adult without evidence of muscle tissue damage. Eight volunteers were obtained from the DeKalb YMCA and the NIU Recreational Center's senior citizens exercise programs. Each volunteer exercised on a treadmill for a total of ten minutes, not inclusive of warm-up and of cool down periods, at a Maximal Predicted Heart Rate (MPHR) of either 50% (four volunteers) or 75% (four …

An Analysis Of The Restructuring Of Corporate America, Chanh Q. Do

Honors Capstones

During the past decade, numerous American companies have restructured their operations in an attempt to remain competitive in a global marketplace. This thesis focuses on corporate restructurings that involve a substantial reduction in a firm's labor force. A restructuring is defined as a reduction of five percent or more in a firm's labor force. This thesis addresses two questions relevant to firm restructuring: 1.) what motivates the firms to restructure their operations 2.) what happens to a firm's performance following a restructuring. The results of the analysis indicate that firms that have declining profitability ratios that fall below industry averages …

An Argument For Recording Stock Options As Stockholders Equity, Richard D. Schefke Jan 1994

An Argument For Recording Stock Options As Stockholders Equity, Richard D. Schefke

Honors Capstones

Disclosing the hidden executive compensation known as stock options has been the goal of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) since 1984. This initiative has been met with great resistance from the corporate world who would like to keep this compensation off of the books. The purpose of this paper is to explore the basic arguments of each side, and then come up with a compromise plan. The 100 page exposure draft by the FASB was my first source, and then further research from articles was researched for the opposing viewpoints. An appendix is included highlighting 13 various companies current …

Heritability Of Sex Ratio Manipulation In Response To Host Size In The Parasitoid Wasp Muscidifurax Raptor, Hilary Lee Jan 1994

Heritability Of Sex Ratio Manipulation In Response To Host Size In The Parasitoid Wasp Muscidifurax Raptor, Hilary Lee

Honors Capstones

Natural selection is the process by which organisms accumulate favorable traits that increase reproductive success. One factor that may influence reproductive success is the ability to manipulate one's offspring sex ratio. Sex ratio manipulation has been especially well-examined in parasitoid wasps, in which manipulation may be quite common. The host-quality model proposes that females will lay a greater proportion of daughters on large hosts than on small hosts because the large host will provide greater resources for the daughters and subsequently will increase their fitness or their ability to pass on their genes by increasing their egg production (Charnov et al., …

Policy Deployment : Information Dissemination And Employee Motivation In The 1990s, Jennifer L. Floyd

Honors Capstones

This paper will discuss policy deployment and its implications for a company's successful pursuit of its vision. The main goal is to support my contention that information dissemination and employee motivation are key to achieving a company vision. The literature will be discussed by the means of relaying common, basic tenets (advice). Two diverse companies, Motorola and Berlin Packaging, were studied, with personal interviews being the major information-gathering technique. These companies will be compared and evaluated based on six focus areas that became apparent after examining the results of the interviews and the policy deployment principles upon which they were …

Development Of Two Dimensional Zymogram/Sds-Page Separation Technique In Order To Characterize And Analyze Degradation Products Of Type I Collagen By Trypsin And The Matrix Metalloproteinases Known As Gelatinases (Mmp-2 And Mmp-9) And Stromelysin (Mmp-3), Kenneth J. Nigro

Honors Capstones

Through manipulations of different variables and development of certain technical processes, it was possible to develop a two-dimensional separation technique for the degradation products of Type I Collagen. The first step was a zymogram method in which gelatin and vitrogen were degraded by both trypsin samples and matrix metalloproteinases. The zymogram gels were then run electrophoretically and then separated into various strips which were treated with 2.5% Triton X-100 and Buffer C and then allowed to incubate at various times and temperatures. The second step was an electrophoretic run of one of the excised strips from the original 2ymograms. Through …

Do Historical Cost Financial Statements Comply With The Objectives Of Sfac 1?, Michelle L. Bogner

Honors Capstones

The Financial Accounting Standards Board has issued Statements of Financial Accounting Concepts to provide the objectives which financial reporting should comply with. As the economic environment and markets have changed, there has been some controversy over whether historical cost information complies with these objectives. This paper reviews the objectives and comes to the conclusion that historical cost is satisfactory for the present, but a change will probably be needed in the future. Several alternatives are discussed and a gradual change to a valuation basis is recommended. User and preparer opinions are discussed and the recommendations take into account their opposition …

This paper discusses: 1) the history of reporting cash flows, 2) problems associated with past methods, 3) current cash flow reporting requirements, 4) why current methods are better than old methods, and 5) the improved ratio analysis possible with the information derived from the …

Towards A Re-Definition Of German Expressionism : Emil Nolde's Woman In A Bright Light And Max Beckmann's The Dream, Lara Nadine Allison Jan 1994

Towards A Re-Definition Of German Expressionism : Emil Nolde's Woman In A Bright Light And Max Beckmann's The Dream, Lara Nadine Allison

Honors Capstones

German Expressionism is a much more complex and involved movement than it is often considered to be. The movement is often defined in terms of a few typical and concise characteristics. This approach undermines the dynamic and changing nature of the movement as a whole. Characteristics which typically function to define German Expressionism are subjectivity, rebelliousness, expressiveness, and wild distortions. While such characteristics undoubtably reveal certain aspects of the art of the German Expressionists, they cannot alone wholly define the movement. In order to define the movement, one needs to pay particular attention to the historical, political, and social environment …

System Development Methodologies : A Comparative Evaluation, Rebecca A. Morgan

Honors Capstones

Today's system developers are faced with increasing pressure to improve the productivity and quality of the system development process. System development methodologies may provide these improvements in productivity and quality by specifying activities, tools, structure, and documentation standards. Although there are many methodologies in existence, there is little empirical evidence to guide practitioners in the selection and use of methodologies. The purpose of this paper is to compare and evaluate several popular methodologies. Based on an analysis of data from numerous sources, five methodologies are described. Research on methodology use and selection is reviewed. The paper concludes with recommendations for …

The Home Office Deduction, Nick Tsagalis Jan 1994

The Home Office Deduction, Nick Tsagalis

Honors Capstones

As a result of a recent Supreme Court decision, Commissioner v. Soliman, stricter guidelines have been imposed upon taxpayers regarding their eligibility to take a home office deduction under the "principle place of business" election. As a result of Soliman, determining a taxpayer's principal place of business went from a "facts and circumstances" test, tailored to each individual case, to tests that consider only two factors. Several pronouncements and publications have prescribed guidelines and examples that explain this decision. Soliman, however, has been subject to criticism by the tax profession. Some professionals believe these tests are too strict. The pronouncements …

Thomas Eakins And Modern Portraiture: Commentaries On The Gilded Age, Jennifer Christine Mach Jan 1994

Thomas Eakins And Modern Portraiture: Commentaries On The Gilded Age, Jennifer Christine Mach

Honors Capstones

Thomas Eakins may be considered one of America’s greatest painters by modern scholars; however, this was not the case in his own time. Fortunately, Eakins was financially independent and was able to select the people whom he wished to paint. The first part of my research focused on Eakin’s choice of sitters, his style and philosophy of painting. Secondly, I compared his style and philosophy of those of his contemporaries, John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler. Finally, I analyzed Eakins’ portraits as commentaries on the Gilded Age.

The Impact Of Electronic Data Interchange On Supplier/Customer Relationships In Industry, Ivette Rodriguez

Honors Capstones

EDI, the exchange of business documentation in a structured machine-processable form, has changed the way industry interacts. Paper, at one time the only way to communicate and document anything, can be eliminated. Information can be managed and handled in an optimal manner, and used to change the relationships established in industry. Implementation is as easy as connecting with a third party network or as involved as developing in-house EDI software. EDI is helping companies manage inventory and logistics systems. All improvements gained by EDI benefit the final customers, and when the customer wins, the contributing companies win. By listening to …
