Venture Capital: The Industry And Its Role In Intial Public Offerings, Christina F. Gwozdz

Honors Capstones

This report analyses the venture capital industry and the role venture capitalists play in initial public offerings (IPO). Venture capitalists invest in the private equity market. They provide financial support and professional expertise in exchange for equity of their portfolio companies. These companies have attractive growth potential, but lack access to typical sources of external financing such as public securities markets or credit markets. With its history tracing back to the Middle Ages, the venture capital industry has expanded most rapidly during the post-World War II Era. Prior to this time, wealthy individuals were the main source of investment capital; …

Early Adoption Of Financial Accounting Standard Board's Statements, Corinne L. Kuhrt

Honors Capstones

The purpose surrounding the basis of this research paper are to try and identify possible reasons for companies to adopt Financial Accounting Standard Board Statement prior to the requirement date. The scope limitation of the paper were the time and length allocated for the project. These factors determined that only one Statement would be explored, Statement 106, would be examined in depth, and that only one industry, the food industry, would be examined. Other limitations were the availability of documents, and capability of understanding information. Research methods used were examination of companies annual reports which comprised the part of the …

An Analysis Of The Recent Behavior Of The Japanese Nikkei Stock Market Average, Mark I. Tanis

Honors Capstones

Since December, 1989, The Japanese Nikkei Stock Market Average has lost over 59 percent of its value. This translates into trillions of Yen in "paper profits" lost with this recent decline in Japan's Stock Market. This thesis depicts several contributing causes to The Nikkei's fall including the following: A changing stock market arena, the banking industry, blue chip companies, and a changing Japanese society. The Changing Stock Market Arena The Tokyo Stock Exchange is changing in at least four different respects. The lack of a formal bond market forces investors to exercise their warrants, driving down The Nikkei Average. The …

A Preliminary Ergonomic Evaluation Of A Grinding Operation, Dan Papp Jan 1993

A Preliminary Ergonomic Evaluation Of A Grinding Operation, Dan Papp

Honors Capstones

I conducted an analysis to determine the ergonomic stressors placed on an employee during a grinding operation. A review of a videotape filmed of the operation indicated that the employee's discomfort was probably related to the low work surface height, the abduction of the right shoulder, and the pronated grip used to hold the grinding tool. In order to improve the employee's posture, the following changes were suggested: 1. Raise the workbench to a height of 36 inches and enable the employee to tilt the work surface forward if desired. 2. Install a foot rail to reduce the static load …

An Analysis Of Room Use At Pueblo Blanco - La 40 New Mexico : Roomblock Nine And Roomblock Sixteen, Tom Durkin

Honors Capstones

The reconstruction of past behavioral patterns is one of the ultimate goals of Archaeologists. Ideally, these reconstructions would integrate isolated aspects of a past society into a series of interrelated behaviors which make up that society as a whole, thus furthering our understanding of culture in general. This study attempts to reconstruct possible room uses for rooms excavated at the site of Pueblo Blanco during the 1992 field season. Based on a survey of room uses proposed by archaeologists working in the Southwest, a series of hypothetical room uses was constructed for Pueblo Blanco. These room uses included kivas, ceremonial …

Logstics In The Banking Industry, Robert A. Nannini Jan 1993

Logstics In The Banking Industry, Robert A. Nannini

Honors Capstones

Logistics in the banking industry is generally an overlooked entity, which causes its effects not to be maximized. Bankers and customers usually take banking logistics for granted and do not realize the power of its usefulness. To be implemented correctly, logistics needs to be recognized as a separate function of banking that ties all of the other functions together, as it does in other industries. ... Although the processes in the supply chain and service response logistics areas are already in place and functional, many do not recognize the importance of logistics in banking. However, before the new technologies are …

Math Anxiety : Its Causes, Effects, And A Program For Its Cure, Steven Christopher Urosevich Jan 1993

Math Anxiety : Its Causes, Effects, And A Program For Its Cure, Steven Christopher Urosevich

Honors Capstones

The aim of this project was to locate the major research dealing with math anxiety, and -based on the conclusions of this research, to develop a program dealing with math anxiety that can be implemented into a high school math curriculum. Too often, the research is not synthesized into a practical solution to the problem; therefore, I chose to take the research one step further and create a plan that can be implemented, by teachers in any math classroom, to help their math anxious students deal with their anxiety. The findings of this project are significant. The most important are: …

U.S. Government Budget Deficits And The Crowding-Out Effect, Robert L. Poulsen Jr. Jan 1993

U.S. Government Budget Deficits And The Crowding-Out Effect, Robert L. Poulsen Jr.

Honors Capstones

The major problem studied in this paper is the crowding-out effect. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether the crowding-out effect is occurring in the U.S., or around the world, because of U.S. government budget deficits. If it is, the way fiscal policy is handled in this country will probably need changing. To study the problem, interest rates within and outside the U.S. are examined to see if U.S. budget deficits affect them. The paper also looks at both sides of the issue to get a better understanding of what is happening. Research studied includes both popular press …

Legal Liability : An Epidemic Plaguing The Accounting Profession, James M. Graham Jan 1993

Legal Liability : An Epidemic Plaguing The Accounting Profession, James M. Graham

Honors Capstones

Currently, accounting firms have become the target of the investors and creditors of failing or bankrupt companies. Under the legal doctrine of joint and several liability, auditors are being brought to court not because they are at fault for poor investment decisions but because they are the only defendants with "deep pockets." The highly litigious atmosphere surrounding the public accounting profession is creating an adverse impact on public accounting firms and the U.S. economy. Tort reform is necessary if the accounting profession is going to continue to thrive. By conducting research with professional journals and interviewing professionals, I explored the …

A Study Of Just-In-Time Installation And Benefits And Factors Impacting Its Effectiveness, Robert T. Flewellyn

Honors Capstones

Today's manufacturing world is more competitive than ever. American companies are falling behind at an alarming pace. But there is hope. Many companies have found success by using Just-In- Time manufacturing philosophies, both in the U.S. and abroad. In this paper, I have tried to focus on some of the ways that companies can ease JIT installation, as well as on reasons why a company would want a JIT system in the first place. I point out things to avoid, and also what to encourage, both among employees and with suppliers. I also discuss the advantages of using JIT instead …

The Role Of Labor Unions In The Future Of United States Firms, Steven R. Murphy Jan 1993

The Role Of Labor Unions In The Future Of United States Firms, Steven R. Murphy

Honors Capstones

A contemporary point of view blames unions for America's deterioration in international competitiveness. In fact, this view was expressed by one of my peers in a class at Northern Illinois University. This and other related incidents have prompted me to explore the issue of whether organized labor has outlived its usefulness or if a different route would be more advantageous. It seems as though many of today's young professionals see unions as having a negative impact in this new global economy. Many perceive them as relics of the past; serving only to decrease productivity and benefit workers at the cost …

Effluent Charges : Good Government, But Bad Business, Ronnie E. Best Jan 1993

Effluent Charges : Good Government, But Bad Business, Ronnie E. Best

Honors Capstones

In examining current government policy on regulating negative externalities caused by pollution, it becomes obvious that more efficient policies are needed. One such policy, which many economists support, is an effluent charge. However, the groups who influence government most rarely support effluent charges. In this paper I will cover common economic theory used to support effluent charges, mention some arguments against effluent charges, and finish with their economic affect on business.

Honors Capstones

Perhaps not as exciting as recreating live dinosaurs from DNA extracted from ancient mosquitoes, but almost as amazing, is manipulating DNA in order to identify particular genes or alleles. Although creating entire organisms from a DNA sample is not possible at this time, recombinant DNA analysis is a powerful tool used in many different disciplines including human forensic science, diagnostic medicine, paternity testing, investigation of wildlife poaching, and plant and animal science. The later category, animal science, was the concern of this lab study.

Executive Decision Making During A Crisis: Burger King Reacts To Hurricane Andrew, Sue M. Scaglione

Honors Capstones

This paper investigates the decision making practices of the Burger King Corporation after the near destruction of its world headquarters in Miami, Florida by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Seven executives were personally interviewed five months after the hurricane. Each were asked the same set of questions to determine: the pathway of decisions, to test the theories of centralized decision making vs. decentralized decision making, to test the structure of the organization on decision making, and to test the applicability of the five steps of decision making. Burger King made decisions based on the problem. The organization is decentralized, allowing for …

Fiber Optic Hydrophone, Patrick D. Conner Jan 1993

Fiber Optic Hydrophone, Patrick D. Conner

Honors Capstones

Optical fiber technology has become one of the most important new developments in communications. Telecommunications and broadcast communications have become the most visible applications of fiber optics. The computer terminals in the lab at Northern Illinois University communicate over a fiber optic local area network (LAN). These and many other applications illustrate the utility of fiber optics in electrical engineering. What is it about fiber optics that makes them so useful in communications? How can light transmit a telephone call or a television program? The answers to these questions lies in the fact that light is no different from microwaves …

Harmonization Of International Income Tax Accounting In Four Capitalist Countries, Lori Gallagher Jan 1993

Harmonization Of International Income Tax Accounting In Four Capitalist Countries, Lori Gallagher

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this thesis is to explain the need for international accounting standards, the IASC's role in developing these standards, and a plan to be used by the IASC to harmonize income tax accounting standards in the U.S., the U.K, Germany, and Japan. Most research was taken from secondary sources, with the exception of one speaker from the Financial Accounting Standards Board. Harmonization of accounting standards is needed to gain easier access into capital markets, and for comparability of financial statements worldwide. The IASC currently issues international accounting standards, however, they are not mandatory, and too broad to be …

How To Get Students More Actively Involved In Science Learning To Avoid Scientific Illiteracy, Amy A. Vacula

Honors Capstones

Students should be more involved in science learning in order to avoid scientific illiteracy. The purpose of this project is to show that hands-on science is one possible solution. After looking at research about the possible consequences of scientific illiteracy and doing an extensive review of current major literary works dealing with the issue, hands-on science appears to be a possible solution. Many people are afraid of the negative effects in the United States if scientific illiteracy continues to be a problem in our society. Hands-on science has helped many teachers capture student's curiosity and interest. Students are encouraged to …

The International Standards Organization's "ISO 9000" series is among the hottest of topics in the American business world. The ISO quality system standard has been adopted by the European Community (EC). Technical Analysis Of Financial Markets: A Critical Study, Colin A. Cox

Honors Capstones

The effectiveness of technical analysis has been debated by investors for years. This paper provides an overview of the history of technical analysis and details the more common techniques used in technical analysis. The relationship between technical analysis and fundamental analysis is discussed as well as how both methods of analysis are reconciled with the efficient market hypothesis. After introducing the more common tools of technical analysis, several of these are applied to Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 index covering the last ten years. The purpose of this paper is to give the reader a basic knowledge of takeovers. It is important for everyone affected by business activities to understand how and why takeovers happen. The scope of this paper covers why takeovers are initiated, financial characteristics of a takeover target, and how takeovers are financed. The Implementation Of Financial Accounting Standard 107, Dale Clayton Jan 1993

The Implementation Of Financial Accounting Standard 107, Dale Clayton

Honors Capstones

The FASB passed Accounting Standard 107 requiring all companies to disclose the fair value of their financial instruments . Implementation of this standard is easy for most companies but financial institutions have a wide variety of financial instruments that must be disclosed at fair value . Determining the fair value of these instruments presents some problems for financial institutions because many of them are not readily marketable therefore, they have no quoted market prices . The purpose for this paper is to address the methods of determining fair value as set forth by the FASB and to evaluate the reliability …

The Information Age : America's So Free They Are In Bondage, David R. Beebe

Honors Capstones

Although many may disagree, the conveniences of the information age do not outweigh the costs that it entails. These sacrifices include personal privacy, individual identity and ultimately the foundation of freedom that America's forefathers laid in the 18th century. Ironically, many do not see this new age as a process of taking away freedom, but actually adding to it. However, this is not the truth. This stripping of freedom is taking place so subtly that most Americans cannot see it happening. A few methods by which the information age causes this loss of liberty need to be revealed. For instance, …

My work can be divided into two parts, the first one an analysis of the industry and the second, a proposal of a Strategic Business Plan for a specific facility. In the first part I analyzed the Exercise Salon and Health Club industry. For example, the industry's forces, competitive structure, and investment requirements. I looked at the …

Deductibility Of Educational Expenses, Patrick Nester Jan 1993

Deductibility Of Educational Expenses, Patrick Nester

Honors Capstones

To determine whether an education expense is deductible, taxpayers must examine a series of tests. The first test determines whether the education qualifies under Section 162 as a trade or business expense. To pass this test, the taxpayer must be engaged in a trade or business and the education must have a direct and proximate relationship to the individual's skills required in his or her profession. If the taxpayer does not satisfy both criteria, then the education is considered personal in nature and is not deductible. If the individual satisfies both criteria, then another set of tests are analyzed. The …
