Art And Math Via Cubic Polynomials, Polynomiography And Modulus Visualization, Bahman Kalantari
Art And Math Via Cubic Polynomials, Polynomiography And Modulus Visualization, Bahman Kalantari
LASER Journal
Throughout history, both quadratic and cubic polynomials have been rich sources for the discovery and development of deep mathematical properties, concepts, and algorithms. In this article, we explore both classical and modern findings concerning three key attributes of polynomials: roots, fixed points, and modulus. Not only do these concepts lead to fertile ground for exploring sophisticated mathematics and engaging educational tools, but they also serve as artistic activities. By utilizing innovative practices like polynomiography—visualizations associated with polynomial root finding methods—as well as visualizations based on polynomial modulus properties, we argue that individuals can unlock their creative potential. From crafting captivating …
Relative Periodicity Of Empirical Audio Samples With Application To Dissonance Perception, Linden Faye, Spencer Kuhn, Anil Venkatesh
Relative Periodicity Of Empirical Audio Samples With Application To Dissonance Perception, Linden Faye, Spencer Kuhn, Anil Venkatesh
LASER Journal
The concept of dissonance in music perception has been variously associated with the physical concepts of roughness, instability, and tension by appealing to a subjective cross-sensory analogy. For all the subjectivity around the term, it is noteworthy that non-musical test subjects in clinical experiments have produced remarkably consistent rank-orderings of musical sounds, according to the perceived dissonance of those sounds. Further studies in psychology, neuroscience, and mathematics show that consonance perception appears to be influenced not only by convention and culture but by the psychoacoustics of sound perception, likely by some combination of the Helmholtz theory of roughness and the …
An Icosahedron For Two: A Many-Sided Look At Making A Duet, Colleen T. Wahl
An Icosahedron For Two: A Many-Sided Look At Making A Duet, Colleen T. Wahl
LASER Journal
The space around our bodies is not empty or neutral. In fact, the space around our bodies is loaded with meaning and important. When we move through it, whether it be in our daily lives or a choreographer making specific choices in order to convey a message, we activate new understandings in our lives. As a dancer and choreographer, I created a duet from improvisational climbs on an icosahedron. This article discusses choreographing from the form icosahedron and connects Laban's theories of space harmony with the activation of meaning in my life.

Seven Steps Of Poesis, Neil Baldwin
Seven Steps Of Poesis, Neil Baldwin
LASER Journal
This text responds to a request from Ashwin Vaidya, co-editor of LASER, in the spirit of his journal’s mission, “to explore links between science and art.” I have published ten volumes of nonfiction -- biography, history, essays and cultural studies – and two collections of poetry and translation over the past five decades. And I was founding director of The (virtual, interdisciplinary) Creative Research Center at Montclair State University from 2010-2020. This is my first attempt to write systematically and analytically about the phases, stages and challenges of generating and structuring a full-length monograph, peering downward from a thirty-thousand foot …
Geometry Through Architectural Design, Maureen T. Carroll, Elyn Rykken
Geometry Through Architectural Design, Maureen T. Carroll, Elyn Rykken
LASER Journal
In her 1912 geometry book, Mabel Sykes surveys complex and beautiful architectural designs from around the world to inspire exercises on geometric proof, construction and computation. In over 1800 exercises, Sykes analyzes geometric patterns from ornamental and structural features found in tile mosaics, parquet floors, Gothic windows, trusses and arches. As Sykes' writes, ``Geometry gives, as no other subject can give, an appreciation of form as it exists in the material world" . We have chosen four examples to illustrate how her appealing designs and the accompanying exercises of this hidden gem can be incorporated into any geometry course.

Call For Culturally Inclusive Texts In The English Classroom: Books As Mirrors And Windows, Annie Yon
Call For Culturally Inclusive Texts In The English Classroom: Books As Mirrors And Windows, Annie Yon
New Jersey English Journal
The literary canon has long been revered in public education as representing the “‘depth and breadth of our national common experience,’ but the problem is that what was once defined as ‘common’—middle class, white, cisgender people—is no longer the reality in our country” (Anderson 1). The United States has a very diverse population, but there is a lack of diverse representation in books taught in the English classroom. In other words, American classics embedded in the curriculum hold merit, but they do not fully represent the stories of all ethnic and culturally diverse students with their own “American” experiences. Poor …
