This thesis reports the synthesis of an organic molecule, 1,4-bis(2,3,4,5-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)butane by two different methods, in about 75% and 85% crude yield. Deprotonation of this molecule followed by reaction with FeCl2 generated the tethered ferrocene, [4]octamethylferrocenophane. Although the yield was low in the first attempt (2%), this molecule has been characterized through NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, electronic spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and decomposition temperature. A computational study was performed to determine the energy gap between each minimum energy structure. It was found that the energy barrier was not high enough to prevent a rapid interconversion between the two structures of minimum energy …

The purpose of this study was to identify the most critical institutional policies and practices deemed essential for the effective development and governance of systemic, effective developmental education programs in community colleges through the perspective of community college administrators. This study ranked community college leaders’ ratings of what policies and practices should be implemented to improve developmental education programs. Expert opinion by the participating developmental education administrators and college presidents were compared and ranked to identify priorities for change. The purpose of this study was to understand the methodologies authors in higher education journals used to obtain knowledge in their fields. This study looked at five peer-reviewed journals of higher education and analyzed the methods of research employed by the authors to help them answer their respective research questions. The correlation between truancy and dropping out of school is high, prompting school districts and the state legislature to attempt to intervene (Sparks, 2010). The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the West Virginia Code 18-8-4 that requires mandatory legal compulsory attendance (CA2) meetings to be held at the county level when a student obtains five days of unexcused absences. In the summer of 2010, the WV state legislature changed the CA2 meeting requirements from 10 days of unexcused absences to five. Barbour County Schools began to intervene in truancy using a multidisciplinary approach in 2007. …

The purpose of this current study is to determine if a difference exists in the attendance rates for special education students and low socioeconomic status students when compared to their peers who do not have these designations. The attendance data from one rural county school district for the years of 2007-2011 were examined to determine if a difference in the attendance rates did exist. Results from this research revealed that students receiving special education services were absent significantly more than their general education peers. However, students of low socioeconomic status were not absent any more than their peers who were …

Recent studies suggest that use of nanoceria in industry is associated with increased risk of human and environmental exposure. How inhaled nanoceria might affect the kidneys is not yet known. To investigate this possibility, Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to a single dose of 7mg/kg body weight cerium oxide nanoparticles by intratracheal instillation. Animals were sacrificed at day 1, 3, 14, or 28 days after exposure and the kidneys collected for histological and biochemical analysis. No significant difference was observed in kidney to body weight ratio between the different groups. Hematoxylin and eosin staining did not reveal any significant changes …

The purpose of this thesis is to look at published and student-produced creative writing, more specifically, personal essays, through the lens of discourse analysis theories in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). From the analysis of these personal essays, this thesis provides pedagogical insight concerning the linguistic features that are prevalent in published and student personal essays. The study examined the placement of faculty on the Continuum of Multicultural Sensitivity at two rural higher education institutions located in the Appalachian region, which includes the states of Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. This placement determined whether there were any significant differences among faculty members based on age, race, gender, income level, educational level, length of time at the institution, length of time in higher education and tenure. The ability to sequence bacterial genetic material directly from environmental samples has unlocked the field of metagenomics. Next-generation sequencing techniques, such as pyrosequencing, have been instrumental in providing knowledge about bacterial communities. This study focused on identifying the bacterial diversity of the Ohio River via pyrosequencing and compared the diversity of cultivable bacteria versus the entire river community. To ensure the maximum number of cultivable bacteria was obtained, cultures were grown on nonselective media and incubated at river temperature. Bacterial DNA was extracted, sequenced, and classified. This investigation determined the degree of importance for selected personal-psychological, academic, peer, financial, and family factors influencing the decision to attend college by first-generation, Appalachian (FGA) sophomore students. Outcomes were further related to the degree of academic and social integration in college and the likelihood of participants returning (persisting) to the next term or year. Participants were a purposeful group of 3,264 sophomores enrolled at three universities. Data were collected using the Transition to College Survey (TCS), which participants completed via an email invitation. There is one aspect of sponsored research associated with higher education’s research enterprise that often places the institution’s research administrators and the institution’s faculty members in conflict with each other: the recovery of Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs associated with sponsored research projects (Sedwick, 2009; Wimsatt, Trice & Langley, 2009). Typically, the source of this conflict is the institution’s assorted uses of recovered F&A costs as unrestricted revenue by the college or university (Cole, 2007; Mitteness & Becker, 1997; Sedwick, 2009; Wimsatt, et al., 2009). The goal of reverse mathematics is to study the implication and non-implication relationships between theorems. These relationships have their own internal logic, allowing some implications and non-implications to be derived directly from others. The goal of this thesis is to characterize this logic in order to capture the relationships between specific mathematical works. The results of our study are a finite set of rules for this logic and the corresponding soundness and completeness theorems. We also compare our logic with modal logic and strict implication logic. In addition, we explain two applications of S-logic in topology and second order arithmetic.

[15]); beta-Gumbel (Nadarajah and Kotz [18]); beta-Exponential (Nadarajah and Kotz [19]); beta-Weibull (Famoye et al. A new trend when dealing with behavior issues in the classroom is that of providing mental health services within the school systems. This study is researching an alternative school that offers mental health services for students that have been expelled from their home school. The purpose of this thesis is to determine if these mental health services provided within the alternative school helps reduce the amount of discipline issues in the school system. Recently, the field of bionanotechnology has sought to develop a device containing a biomolecular motor nano-cargo transport system. Among many applications, a device of this sort could be used to sort, purify, or detect specific molecules. In this work, an attempt was made to incorporate the actin-myosin biomolecular motor system into a microfluidic device constructed out of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and glass. Methods for cleaning and functionalizing the glass surface of the device were optimized. After performing actin-myosin motility assays in a variety of PDMS/glass devices, it was determined that the oxygen permeability of PDMS limited the quality of motility that …

In this thesis, I explore the performances of motherhood in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind and how those performances conflict with culturally constructed expectations of that role. An analysis of Scarlett O’Hara and Melanie Wilkes, and how each woman compares to the South’s model for motherhood, reveals implications that extend beyond the novel’s Civil War setting to reveal the ongoing negotiation of modern readers still living within patriarchal conceptions of mothering. Calls of male anurans during breeding seasons are species-specific identification tools. However, males cease calling after any nearby disturbance, including those of researchers. I proposed a variation on current methods that attempts to reduce this lag in calling after researcher-created disturbance by utilizing the propensity for competition in male frogs. I surveyed 14 breeding sites in Cabell and Wayne counties during the 2010 and 2011 breeding seasons. First, I used traditional visual encounter surveys (VESs). The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the distinct and purposeful differences of the language of evaluation between English textbooks and Japanese textbooks. This thesis applies Appraisal system in Systemic Functional Linguistics to the language arts textbooks used in 2nd to 4th grade classrooms in Japan and in the U.S. The analysis shows that the number of Attitudinal lexical items, especially invoked Attitude, is notably higher than that in the English texts. This research study examines the effect of social media, particularly Facebook and Twitter, on the purchasing habits of college students by testing for correlations between recommendations on social media and consumption patterns. Moreover, the research also examines the role of gender and social media usage frequency on consumption patterns. Findings revealed that both Facebook and Twitter are being used to obtain sales information and promotions. Furthermore, gender has an impact on both social networking sites. Additionally, this study found the higher the frequency of social media usage the more likely customers are to shop at the businesses they have befriended.

Selenium in mining-related discharges has created concern in the Appalachian Region where coal is a significant resource. In West Virginia, evaluation of streams receiving mining discharges focused attention on the Mud River watershed where bioaccumulation of selenium was highest in preliminary surveys. Chronic exposure (mainly dietary) of mature female fish to selenium has the potential to cause developmental abnormalities in developing embryos due to the maternal transfer of selenium into the eggs. Hurricane Katrina is widely regarded as the greatest natural disaster to ever befall the United States. Following the storm’s devastation of the Gulf Coast region, a media firestorm unleashed, seeking to ascribe responsibility to governmental actors for the “failed” response effort. Through a comparative framing analysis, this study sought to investigate how major news outlets, the White House, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency framed the response efforts that followed Hurricane Katrina.
